Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises. Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.
We don’t really know how old it is
It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently.
The Grand Canyon creates its own weather
Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool — no pun (双关语) intended. Sudden changes in elevation (海拔) have great effects on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you’re experiencing could change largely depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the area is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.
There are lots of fossils in the area
While the dinosaurs might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found that suggest other creatures often visited the area. They range from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.
Fish are relatively uncommon in the area
Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
21. What is the weather like in the Great Canyon?
A. It is pretty cool. B. It is extremely hot.
C. It is unusually cold. D. It changes from place to place.
22. Why are fish relatively unusual in the area?
A. It has a special geological phenomenon.
B. The temperature here is relatively stable.
C. It offers tough habitats for fish with extreme temperature.
D. There are eight fish species unique to the world.
23. Which section of a magazine is the text most likely from?
A. Geography. B. Life. C. Stories. D. Science.

You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a soft ball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realised running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was hungry!
As I got close to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same me dal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
24. A month before the marathon, the author __________.
A. lost hope B. felt scared C. was well trained D. made up his mind to run
25. Why did the author mention the PE class in his 7th year?
A. To express the support of his teacher.
B. To show he was not good at sports.
C. To amuse the readers with a funny story.
D. To share a precious memory.
26. How was the author’s first marathon?
A. He made it. B. He quitted halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us?
A One is never too old to learn.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
D. A man owes his success to his family support.

It’s a hot time for Chinese language learning across the world, not only because of China’s higher status (地位) in the global community but also because of the increasing economic and cultural connections between China and other countries. As one of the latest countries to welcome Chinese language lecturers, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to open Chinese language courses in 200 public primary and secondary schools; experienced Chinese teachers are eagerly needed.
Other Chinese courses opening across world show the increasing demand for Chinese-speaking talent. Russia included Mandarin (普通话) as an elective foreign language in the country’s college entrance exam. Following English German, French, and Spanish, Mandarin has become the fifth elective test item for the exam, according to Sergey Kravtsov, Deputy Minister of Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science.
Spain, for example, has more than 40,000 people learning Chinese; last year some 8,000 took the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) exam, ranking first among the member states of the European Union, according to Xinhua News Agency.
In the US, learning Chinese has been thriving for a number of years and is now a popular choice for American children, especially those who born in elite (精英) families. The children are exposed to the language at an early age as their parents believe mastering Chinese will help them build successful international careers.

D. China has more international influence globally.
29. What can we know about Chinese learning in Europe?

B. There are 200 public primary schools offering Chinese courses in Russia.
C. A Chinese teacher can earn $4,500 a month in Spain.
D. One fifth of students learning Chinese took the HSK in Spain last year.

More than two thirds of the world’s polar bears will be wiped out by 2050, according to a shocking new study. By then, scientists say, global warming will have melted 42 percent of the Arctic sea ice. By 2100, only a very few of these important creatures will be left.
The report has been produced by the US Geological Survey. The scientists have publicized their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne who has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
Polar bears depend on floating sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. Without enough ice, polar bears would be forced to go onto the land, where they are poorly skilled hunters, and would be unlikely to adapt to the life on the land in time. Experts say few little bears would survive and the stress could make many females unable to get pregnant.
The team of American and Canadian scientists spent six months studying bears, on the ground, from spotter planes and in the lab, using computer models. Some team members fear the result is even worse for the bears than what their report says. They say the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere in the world and much faster than their computer had been forecasting. Satellite observations have showed that the ice has decreased to an all-time low.
However, not everyone in the scientific community believes that global warming is happening on such an alarming scale. Another investigation has found that polar bears are still being hunted by wealthy “sportsmen” who want their skins and heads. At least ten international companies offer bear-hunting trips.
32. What do we know about Dirk Kempthorne according to the passage?
A. He is an animal scientist.
B. He is a protector of animals working for the US government.
C. He was asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
D. He offered to put polar bears on the endangered species list.
33. Why will polar bears die out if there is not enough sea ice?
A. Because polar bears can’t catch enough food without ice.
B. Because polar bears eat ice when they feel thirsty.
C. Because polar bears will be easily found by hunters without ice.
D. Because most female bears are used to giving birth under ice.
34. After a six-month study, some scientists fear that________.
A. there is something wrong with their computers
B. polar bears will disappear even faster than they ever expected
C. their computer models are not as accurate as they expected
D. global warming will destroy everything in the Arctic
35. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Global warming makes the whole world different.
B. Human beings are responsible for the endangered species.
C. Most of the polar bears will be wiped out by the end of this century.
D. Scientists have found that most animals in the Arctic will die out by the end of this century.

W: We’ve talked about this for a while. I’ve actually been thinking about volunteering at the shelter on weekends. My husband supports that idea a lot more than having a dog in our house.
M: That’s a great idea.
W: I think I’m going to apply now, do you want to come along?
M: Oh, sorry, I have to go to the pet shop to buy some pet supplies.
W: In that case, let’s go together tomorrow.
M: Sure.

【原文】This is my garden. It is a great place to have fun. I have three trees in the garden. There is a young lemon tree which is very small and doesn’t have any fruit. Maybe next year, I also have a peach tree. There aren’t many peaches this year because of the cold weather we had in April and May. My third tree is an apple tree. Apples always grow well in this area, and the tree is full of big green apples. I have two animals in the garden at the moment. Max is my rottweiler dog. Many people think rottweilers are dangerous, but Max is very friendly and everybody loves him. Playing with Max is Hector, our energetic cat. He is nearly ten years old. There is a large tent in the middle of the grass. My brother Luke likes camping but my mother doesn’t want him to go camping. So he sometimes sleeps in the tent. I think my mother is right. Camping in the garden isn’t safe for a five-year-old boy.

A
Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises.
A. Geography. B. Life. C. Stories. D. Science.
【答案】21. D 22. C 23. A

A. One is never too old to learn.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
D. A man owes his success to his family support.

The scientists have publicized their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
