九年级上学期英语时文阅读系列 (环境保护) A The 55th Earth Day is on Monday, April 22, 2024. Its theme is “Planet vs Plastics" and the goal is to make much less plastic, 60% less by 2040. We can celebrate Earth Day by respecting the natural world. Here are some ideas to inspire you. Bring native bees to your garden. One way to do this is by growing the right plants, such as plants that attract butterflies as well as flowers that attract pollinating (授粉) bees. Learn more about native bees and make a native bee house (much like a birdhouse). One of the best ways to connect with the Earth is through the clean-up. Go on a walk with a trash bag and help to clean up any plastic that you find in your neighborhood or the nearby park. Perhaps you know of a ditch (沟渠) just round the corner that is polluted with trash! We love our trees! Do you know that one oak tree brings in more insect and bird species than a whole yard of plants? Talk to your local government about planting more trees in public spaces, or consider planting your own trees around your house! Most of the beginner gardeners who we meet want to start growing without chemicals. Much of this is imply about focusing less on the plant and more on the health of the soil that supports the plant. It's easy to use organic plant fertilizers (肥料) made from just other plants and water. This is how nature works! 1. Growing the right plants in our garden is A. to bring native bees in B. to build a butterfly house C. to make our planet greener D. to make a wood house for birds 2. What does the underlined part “just round the corner" mean in the passage? A. Very near. B. Far away. C. Clean and tidy. D. Sooner or later. 3. We are advised to plant trees a. in the park b. along a dirty ditch c. in our own garden d. around a bee house A. a b B. a c C. b c D. c d 4. The purpose of using no chemicals in our gardens is A. to support the plant B. to keep the soil healthy C. to learn how nature works D. to make organic plant fertilizers B As winter comes to the northern part of India, the air pollution problem is so bad that schools have been closed, and people are being told to stay indoors. One way to measure air pollution is the US Air Quality Index (AQI). It goes from 0 to 500. Zero is "Excellent", 150 is “Unhealthy", and from 300 to 500 is “Dangerous". Last Friday, the air in New Delhi measured around 480. Smog, a form of air pollution, holds dangerous chemicals, as well as billions of tiny bits of dust. These tiny particles (颗粒), which can be smaller than 1/30 of the width of a human hair, are especially dangerous. Breathing brings these particles deep into the lungs, where they can cause many different sicknesses, from coughs, headaches, and sore throats to asthma (哮喘), lung problems, and even cancer. A recent study suggests that on average, people in New Delhi may live nearly 12 years longer if the city's air is clean. New Delhi's smog problems are always worse in winter when winds slow down, and cold air sinks closer to the ground, bringing the smog down with it. Last Thursday, the New Delhi government stopped all construction work that wasn't essential. People driving old, polluting cars and trucks are being fined. Last Friday, schools in New Delhi were closed and may last till next Friday. People have been warned not to go outdoors without a mask. The government is using trucks that spray (喷洒) water to try to help clear the air. Many people are buying air cleaning machines to run inside their homes, since the smog can even come in through small cracks (裂缝). The burning of highly-polluting coal is responsible for a large part of New Delhi's smog problem. That won't change any time soon. Another cause of the pollution comes from farmers in nearby areas, who clear their land by burning the straw covering their fields. This has been banned, but farmers are still doing it. On October 29, over 1,000farm fires were reported in the state of Punjab. These fires create huge amounts of smoke, which wind up collecting in cities like New Delhi. 1. How was the air quality in New Delhi last Friday? A. Excellent. B. Good. C. Unhealthy. . D. Dangerous. 2. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. New Delhi's smog problems are serious. B. People in New Delhi focus on their health, C. The chemicals are more dangerous than dust. D. The tiny particles in the air are harmful to human health. 3. To solve the air pollution problem, New Delhi government A. required students to stay at home B. fined people driving private cars C. stopped all the construction work D. forced people to buy air cleaning machines 4. What causes New Delhi's air pollution problem? a. People burn highly-polluting coal. b. Farmers burn the straw in their fields. c. Winds blow harder in winter than usual. d. Many trees in the city have been cutdown. A.a, b B.a, d C.b,c D.c, d 5. What's the best title for the passage? A. The US Air Quality Index B. The fires near New Delhi C. The air pollution in New Delhi D. The environment of New Delhi C Scientists are worried about the future of the axolotl (美西螈) in Mexico. The axolotl is a kind of salamander (##T), with a long body, short legs, and a long tail. Its body is covered with smooth, slimy 有粘液的)skin. Most salamanders go through a big change which allows them to live on land instead of in water. But axolotls never do. They keep their gills (鳃) and live their whole lives in water. The axolotl is a strange, but amazing animal. If an axolotl loses a leg, or even part of its heart, brain, or lungs, it can regrow them. Scientists have long been interested in how the axolotl heals itself. Some people think the information could help solve some human medical problems. There are several different species of axolotls in Mexico. All of them are seriously endangered. The Mexican axolotl, which is the best known, is only found naturally in Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City. This is not a big, open lake, but a collection of canals(运河) and smaller bodies of water. Sadly, axolotls are in trouble. The number of axolotls in Xochimilco has changed a lot in less than 20 years. Scientists used to find thousands of axolotls in a fairly small area. Now, they're only finding dozens. There are many reasons for the drop in axolotls. One is that the water in the canals has become more and more polluted. Another is that there are invasive (入侵的) fish in the lake which are eating the axolotls' food, and even their babies.' Scientists at Universidad Nacional Autónoma deMéxico (UNAM) have been working for years to try to protect the axolotls. Last year, the UNAM scientists started a program called “Adopt Axolotl" to raise money. The program was a big hit, and raised more than $26,000. The money was used to help clean up some of Xochimilco's canals. Also, the scientists hope to raise enough money to do a careful count of how many axolotls are left in the wild. This will help them figure out the best ways of protecting these amazing animals. 1. What can we learn about the axolotl from the second paragraph? A. lts skin is covered with slime. B. It has long legs and a short tail. C. It lives both on land and in water. D. It has no gills when growing up. 2. What's the third paragraph mainly about? A. Axolotls are endangered. B. Axolotls are too weak to keep healthy. C. Axolotls have the ability to heal themselves. D. Axolotls can solve some human medical problems. 3. What has happened to the number of axolotls in Lake Xochimilco in less than20 years? A. It has had a small change. B. It has dropped a lot. C. It has stayed the same. D. It has become much larger. 4. Axolotls become endangered because of_ a. climate change b. the water pollution c. the invasion of other fish d. the fishing activities of humans A. a b B. a c C. b c D. c d 5. What's the best title for the passage? A. Mexican axolotls in danger B. The species of axolotls in Mexico C. The program to support axolotls D. The work of the scientists from UNAM D Do you often sweep the fallen leaves in your schoolyard? Could they pollute our environment? There is a growing movement to leave leaves on the ground, instead of collecting them. The idea is to avoid sending bagged-up fallen leaves to landfills(垃圾填埋场). Instead, they will naturally decompose into rich organic matter. Done correctly, leaving the leaves is one of the best ways to turn yard waste into free fertilizer, which is good for plants and the environment and saves money. But it is important to consider the types of leaves that are falling and where they are landing. Whole leaves should not be left on walkways, where they could make the path dangerously slippery (滑的). They should also not be left on lawns (草坪),where they are likely to cause disease. In areas that experience snow cover, water would become trapped(困住) between grass and leaves. That could lead to mold (霉菌 ) and other fungal (真菌) infections. In areas without snow, whole leaves that cover grasses block water and sunlight from reaching the soil below. Many people choose to break up the leaves using a machine and let the pieces to fall between pieces of grass. Then the pieces break down further in the soil. However, this treatment can kill insects and their eggs. Another method is to take the leaves off the lawn and spread them lightly to cover garden beds. The leaves mostly break down by spring and almost entirely by summer. But if not, they should be removed before spring growth begins. Leaves also can be used to make a type of соmроѕt (堆肥). Juѕt ріlе thеm uр іn а соrnеr, аdd nitrogen fertilizer( 氮肥), and water it to keep it from drying out. It may take a year or two, but the leaves will break down into a nutritious (营养丰富的) soil. Why waste that important resource? 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。 1. What are the benefits of leaving leaves on the ground? (列出丙点即可) 2 What will happen when whole leaves are left on walkways? B In what places can whole leaves cause disease? 4 How can we use leaves to make the compost? 5 Should we send fallen leaves to landfills? Why or why not? E More than 30 paraders (游行者) dressed in special costumes made of thousands of beer and soda cans walked around the Brazilian island of Madre de Deus on February 11. Each costume was made of around 1,600 cans. They were collected over the last few months, then 1 washed. The cans, grouped by color and type, were tied to the clothing with a small wire 金属丝). This year, performers wore a red mask covering their 2 with pointy black ears. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the parade, cheering on the much-loved street party. “In addition to being 3 , it's really fun," said Fábia do Carmo Carvalho, 19, who has been parading with the group for several years. First founded in 1997, the street party was born out of concern about the sea of cans left on the streets 4 Carnival (狂欢节). A group of friends began collecting cans and tying them to their clothing. But a few years later, collecting recyclable materials became a 5 . People can now take cans to recycling centers and get paid based on their weight. While the island suddenly became much 6 as a result the group could hardly find cans. The can street party was 7 for a short time before returning in 2011. The street party now 8 people who have collected recyclable cans. Each costume costs about$44- -a large amount in a country where the monthly minimum wage (最低工资) is $285. Santos is a member of the street party and the message it carries for the people of Madre de Deus. He is a 9 who makes a living by fishing. "I see people drinking and throwing their cans into the sea. I catch them and bring them back to shore," he said. Called +Pool, the pool serves two purposes: to provide a f 1 swimming facility (设施) to thepublic, and to help clean the river water. A 185-square-meter version of +Pool will be tested on the East River this summer. And if all g 2 well, a full-size pool of over 880 square meters will open to the public in 2025. +Pool has been a long time in the making. A small team of designers first had the idea for a floating pool that c 3 clean river water in 2010. They designed a pool with walls that act like a strainer (滤器). Now the +Pool project has a 4 received $4 million from New York City and $ 12 million from New York State to make the idea a reality. New York's waterways have been dirty for long. And a 5 they're much cleaner than they used to be, they still aren't clean enough to swim in. +Pool came from a simple idea: if just a small part was cleaned instead of trying to clean e 6 , New Yorkers could swim in their rivers. When completed, the full-size pool will be able to clean over 3.7 million liters of water a day- -w 7 using chemicals. The pool is designed so that everyone can use it, so there are a 8 four pools in one: one for kids, one for sports, one for swimming laps (泳道), and one for just relaxing. +Pool will also be used to provide free swimming lessons for children and a 9 , as well as for environmental education programs. If +Pool is a success, the team behind the project hopes to create several s 10 pools at different locations around the city. 参考答案: A: AABB B: DDAAC C: ACBCA D: 1.
