The dog is moving through the grass, closely followed by bear biologist Carrie Hunt, who is observing his reactions as he sees the grizzly bear carcass (尸体) for the first time. “Find it,” says Hunt, encouraging the two-month-old puppy. The puppy’s ears and tail are up as he approaches the bear, but with the confidence that Hunt is looking for in a bear conflict dog.
This is a Karelian bear dog, a type of animal known to be fearless and capable of standing up to large mammals. People once used them to hunt. Today, Hunt is using them to keep bears alive.
Karelian puppies undergo a series of procedures where trainers teach them the right behaviours and evaluate their personality and how they react. Just 20% will make the cut as bear conflict dogs. When ready, they are distributed across North America—for example, working with the Alaska fire service to keep firefighters safe and reduce the number of bears killed.
In America, bears live in landscapes where the human footprint is expanding. Consequently, people and predators (捕食性动物) are forced to share space, setting the stage for increased conflicts. Historically, wildlife managers tried to scare bears away with noise makers and rubber bullets (子弹), but that did not always work. Now the wildlife department is employing dogs. When a bear dares to come too close, the dogs chase it away in a brief pursuit. “For the bear, it is a bad experience,” Hunt says. Bears are born to be wary of animals of the dog family as wolves can kill their babies. The lesson taught by the dogs is one that the bears seem to remember. A study found that bears that had encounters with bear dogs spent less time in urban areas.
“The dogs make me a better biologist because they allow me to keep bears in the landscape as long as I possibly can, rather than having to kill and remove them,” Hunt says.
24. What do you think of the dog from his reaction at the first sight of the carcass?
A. Observant and aggressive.
B. Mindful but fearful.
C. Determined and skilled.
D. Cautious but brave.
25. What do we know about the training?
A. It starts with dogs recognizing bear carcasses.
B. A very small percentage survives the selection.
C. Personality tests really weigh the most heavily.
D. Firefighters teamed with dogs further the training.
26. What do the underlined words “be wary of” most probably mean?
A. Be watchful of. B. Be ashamed of.
C. Be envious of. D. Be fond of.
27. What is the purpose of training the bear conflict dogs?
A. To keep more bear dogs alive.
B. To evaluate the training procedures.
C. To train would-be biologists.
D. To resolve human-animal conflicts.

You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room? Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.
You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.
But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.
While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.
“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.
28. What is sleep paralysis?
A. A frightening dream that interrupts sleep.
B. A physical symptom of anxiety disorders.
C. A mental disease that affects sleep quality.
D. A brief state of being conscious but frozen.
29. What do people who have sleep paralysis often experience?
A. Involuntary cough. B. Unreal sensation.
C. Sharpened vision. D. Sustained immobility.
30. What does Dr. Nathaniel Watson say about sleep paralysis?
A. It is caused by inadequate sleep. B. It can be a warning signal of diseases.
C. It is a temporary disturbing experience. D. It can be prevented by extreme exercise.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Common Myths About Sleep Paralysis
B. Sleep Paralysis: How It Affects Sleep Patterns
C. Ways to Prevent and Cope with Sleep Paralysis
D. Sleep Paralysis: Why We Jerk Awake and Can’t Move

There’s an enormous amount of personal health information people now feed or tap into digital monitors, health apps, search engines and other online tools. If the same information were provided in your doctor’s office, your privacy would be safeguarded. But that’s not how the digitized health world works.
Instead, we have an ecosystem of abuse in which health technology companies operate largely outside the law that requires doctors and other medical personnel, hospitals and insurers to protect an individual’s health information.
That means technology companies can — and do — dig your digital data for clues about your health status, accessing information like prescriptions you have purchased and other health services you might have sought, and potentially link this information to your name, address, email address and other personally identifying information. The data can then be used by platforms including Facebook and Google to help advertisers target promotions or other communications to you.
It’s a gaping hole in health privacy protections that comes from the privacy law, which protects interactions between patients, medical professionals and insurers but does not, in most cases, protect patient health data that is recorded on new technologies.
Closing the patient privacy gap can- and should -be a priority for lawmakers. The consequences of digital exposure for those seeking reproductive services have drawn significant concern and attention. These worries are reasonable. But reproductive care is only one area of health services where private patient information is digitally disclosed.
Therefore, lawmakers must take action to protect the privacy of people who are now online for all manners of personal, professional and other reasons. Until then, a narrowly targeted approach that protects health privacy may be politically easier to come into effect. The explosion of digital health technology and the dramatic increase in its use in the past few years require it greatly.
32. What can we learn about the present situation of the digitized health world?
A. Personal health data is used for other purposes.
B. Personal health information is difficult to identify.
C. Targeted promotions are used to improve people’s health.
D. Medical personnel protect the personal health information well.
33. What’s the author’s attitude towards the present privacy law?
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Cautious. D. Ambiguous.
34. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The spread of health service.
B. People’s privacy.
C. A narrowly targeted approach.
D. The explosion of digital technology.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To advocate improvement in the privacy law.
B. To report cases of illegal information exposure.
C. To explain how the digitized health world works.
D. To introduce a debate on the effect of technology.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

M: My wife and I have thought about it, but we can’t afford it right now. Molly, you know the only thing we could afford would be living in such bad conditions, although I don’t want to do it.
W: Buying a house can be expensive most of the time, but there are ways to find cheaper houses. Listen, sometimes the government sells some houses at a lower price. You have to make a quick decision in a day, but you would definitely save money doing it that way.
M: That’s a good idea. Do you know anyone who has done that before?
W: Sure, my aunt just bought a house that way. She’s pretty satisfied with it. Her son also plans to buy a house that way.

20. Why does Asian cooking come in small pieces?
A. More tasty. B. More convenient. C. More energy-saving.
【答案】18. C 19. B 20. C
【解析】
【原文】W: It is such a sort of instrumental part of our cooking vocabulary and it is interesting that there are people who live without chopsticks. Chopsticks are a pair of two long sticks used to eat things with one hand. Holding chopsticks is a little bit like holding a pencil. Most of them are made out of wood. They’re also made out of plastic, bamboo, gold, silver and even ivory. There is evidence of chopsticks as long ago as the Shang Dynasty, which is about three thousand years ago. Chopsticks are really well designed for eating small bits of food. They’re good for picking up noodles. If you’re skilled, you can eat rice, pick up dumplings and pieces of meat. There are some no-nos with chopsticks. You should not use the chopsticks like drumsticks. You don’t want to stick chopsticks into a bowl of rice face- up and it’s sort of like the sign of death. Chopticks are used in a huge portion of the world across much of Asia. About one point five billion people are covered in the chopsticks sphere. Different cultures have slightly different variations of chopsticks. Chinese chopsticks will tend to be long and round. Korean chopsticks are flatter and often made of metal. Japanese chopsticks tend to be round and very very pointy. One of the things about Asian cooking is that it often comes in very small pieces and I think part of that has to do with the fact that it’s actually a lot more energy efficient to cook little pieces quickly.

D
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. A
【解析】

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Instead, we have an ecosystem of abuse in which health technology companies operate largely outside the law that requires doctors and other medical personnel, hospitals and insurers to protect an individual’s health information.(相反,我们有一个滥用的生态系统,在这个生态系统中,医疗技术公司在很大程度上违反了要求医生和其他医务人员、医院和保险公司保护个人健康信息的法律)”以及第三段“That means technology companies can — and do — dig your digital data for clues about your health status, accessing information like prescriptions you have purchased and other health services you might have sought, and potentially link this information to your name, address, email address and other personally identifying information. The data can then be used by platforms including Facebook and Google to help advertisers target promotions or other communications to you.(这意味着科技公司可以——也确实做到了——挖掘你的数字数据,寻找你健康状况的线索,获取你购买的处方和你可能寻求的其他健康服务等信息,并可能将这些信息与你的姓名、地址、电子邮件地址和其他个人身份信息联系起来。然后,这些数据可以被包括Facebook和谷歌在内的平台使用,以帮助广告商向你定向促销或其他通信)”可知,现在我们的个人健康信息没有得到应有的保护,反而这些数据被包括Facebook和谷歌在内的平台使用,以帮助广告商向你定向促销或其他通信。故选A。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“It’s a gaping hole in health privacy protections that comes from the privacy law, which protects interactions between patients, medical professionals and insurers but does not, in most cases, protect patient health data that is recorded on new technologies.(这是来自隐私法的健康隐私保护的一个巨大漏洞,隐私法保护患者,医疗专业人员和保险公司之间的互动,但在大多数情况下,不保护记录在新技术上的患者健康数据)”可知,作者认为现行的隐私法存在巨大漏洞。由此推知,他对现行隐私法是批评的。故选B。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词上一句“Until then, a narrowly targeted approach that protects health privacy may be politically easier to come into effect.(在此之前,保护健康隐私的针对性较窄的方法在政治上可能更容易生效)”以及划线单词上文“The explosion of digital health technology and the dramatic increase in its use in the past few years require it greatly.(数字医疗技术的爆炸式增长及其使用在过去几年中急剧增加,对它提出了极大的要求)”可推测,划线词it指的是上文提到的“targeted approach”。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Therefore, lawmakers must take action to protect the privacy of people who are now online for all manners of personal, professional and other reasons. Until then, a narrowly targeted approach that protects health privacy may be politically easier to come into effect. The explosion of digital health technology and the dramatic increase in its use in the past few years require it greatly.(因此,立法者必须采取行动,保护那些出于个人、职业和其他原因上网的人的隐私。 故选A。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors.
