Parents won’t mind reading the story over and over to their kids because as they pass along the message that their kids are perfect just the way they are—no matter their untidy hair, or whether they are fast or slow, their kids will learn about confidence. Dragons Love Tacos(炸玉米饼) While books with a deep message are great, sometimes you and your child just want to read something silly to get the laughs rolling. The New York Times bestseller, Dragons Love Tacos is a great read for kids and parents as it talks about how much dragons really love tacos, but when they eat something spicy (辛辣的) you had better watch out! Que Cosas Dice Mi Abuela B. I Like Myself! C. Dragons Love Tacos D. The Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes B When I was a teenager, I wrote postcards to show my friends the new places I had explored every time my family took a vacation. I considered postcards as simply a way to share travels until I came across my grandmother’s postcard album. It was a dark gray leather album, where most of the postcards had pictures that did not reflect a holiday or a travel destination. Instead, the notes were mostly invitations to a dinner party or, a walk the next day. “Why do these postcards ask you to come to tea?” I asked my grandmother. “Because this is how we communicated before we had a telephone,” she said. “I would post a postcard in the morning mail, and a friend would receive it that afternoon. Then she would post a reply that arrived in my mail the next morning.” I was surprised. Life without a phone sounded like something out of the world. Connecting by postcard seemed as unexpected as using a carrier pigeon (信鸽). I had forgotten about my grandmother’s postcards until lockdowns (封锁) restricted our trips to seeing our three granddaughters. Remembering my grandmother’s album, I bought several sets of cards and every few weeks, I’d write notes and mail them. The girls sometimes responded with brief thank-you texts. Then one day I opened my mailbox and spotted three hand-addressed envelopes. They were from my granddaughters, each thanking me for the postcards. The notes captured their disappointment with the pandemic and described how my messages had comforted them. I had been thinking how my grandmother had accepted the telephone as a new way to keep relationships. Like her, I accepted the girls’ preferred mode of communication and texted my thanks for their letters. However, even as the lockdowns end, I will continue to send them postcards because everyone enjoys receiving a real letter. 4. Why did the author’s grandmother write postcards? A. To share off her travel experiences. B. To show love and care. C. To kill the time. D. To keep in touch with people. 5. What did the author think of life without a phone? A. It was unbelievable. B. It was peaceful. C. It was just as usual. D. It was attractive. 6. How did the author feel when receiving her granddaughters’ letters? A. Disappointed. B. Regretful. C. Delighted. D. Embarrassed. 7. Which one should be the title for the text? A. An Old Postcard Album B. New Ways of Communication C. Love during Lockdowns D. Attraction of Postcards C Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team. “Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment. “In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by. The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节), which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces. As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. “We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots,” Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment.” 8. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Possible application fields of the robot. B. Different types of the robot. C. Several important features of the robot. D. Working process of the robot. 9. Which of the following can best describe mCLARI? A. Valuable but uncontrollable. B. Modern but high-cost. C. Heavy and time-consuming. D. Advanced and effective. 10. What is Jayaram’s attitude towards the robot? A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested. 11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B. mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D. A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries D A new study, led by Dr. Rebecca Stone, has shown that children as young as four years old eat 79% more calories when they are bored, compared to when they are in a normal mood (情绪) . The researchers have explored the behaviors that make children more likely to eat when they experience negative emotions. Often when children experience bad emotions such as boredom or sadness, caring adults will use food to soothe them. However, this behavior, known as emotional feeding, appears to increase the possibility of children eating more when they are in low spirits. As time passes, too many calories intake will have a significant effect on children’s health both mentally and physically. Dr. Stone stresses that the experience of boredom is important in the development of children’s sense of self and creativity, so she does not recommend that children should avoid being bored. Instead, she suggests children learn to experience boredom without turning to food. She also suggests that parents turn their children’s attention away from food when they feel bored, or restructure the home food environment to make it less likely that children turn to food in response to being bored. While there do appear to be individual differences between children in terms of their eating when bored, it is helpful to know that the feeding practices that adults use around food might shape the likelihood of this happening. Although it is attractive to use food as a tool to help children, emotional feeding might lead to greater emotional eating in the future. It is important for parents and caregivers to be aware that this short-term fix could create future problems. It is hoped that, on the original basis of the study, the team will deeply explore other negative mood states in children and offer advice and support for families to find more effective ways to manage challenges around children eating behavior. 12. What does the research focus on? A. How children form good living habits. B. How children face challenges in life. C. How boredom impacts on children eating. D. How parents bring up their children. 13. What does the underlined word “soothe” mean in paragraph 2? A. Ignore. B. Comfort. C. Excuse. D. Control. 14. What can we know about emotional feeding? A. It makes children lose weight quickly. B. It creates a new home food environment. C. It cannot keep children trusting their parents. D. It may not help handle bad moods in the long run. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. Expectations for further studies. B. The importance of going on a diet. C. The necessity of managing moods. D. Ways to strengthen family relationship. Universities are doing everything they can to become a green campus. Que Cosas Dice Mi Abuela B. I Like Myself! C. Dragons Love Tacos D. The Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes 【答案】1. B 2. B 3. 根据Que Cosas Dice Mi Abuela部分的“Spanish-speaking parents will love this fun book—which was translated into “The things my grandmother says” —in which a grandmother teaches manners (规矩) to her grandchildren and their friends using traditional Spanish-language sayings.(说西班牙语的父母会喜欢这本有趣的书——它被翻译成“我的祖母说的话”——在这本书中,祖母用传统的西班牙语谚语教她的孙子和他们的朋友礼貌。)” 根据I Like Myself!部分的“because as they pass along the message that their kids are perfect just the way they are—no matter their untidy hair, or whether they are fast or slow, their kids will learn about confidence.(因为当他们告诉他们的孩子,他们的孩子就是完美的,无论他们的头发凌乱,或他们是快还是慢,他们的孩子将学会自信。)” 根据Dragons Love Tacos (炸玉米饼) 部分的“Dragons Love Tacos is a great read for kids and parents as it talks about how much dragons really love tacos, but when they eat something spicy (辛辣的) you had better watch out!(《龙爱炸玉米饼》对孩子和父母来说是一本很好的读物,因为它讲述了龙是多么喜欢玉米饼,但当它们吃辛辣的东西时,你最好小心!)” C。 B When I was a teenager, I wrote postcards to show my friends the new places I had explored every time my family took a vacation. C To kill the time. D. To keep in touch with people. 5. What did the author think of life without a phone? A. It was unbelievable. B. It was peaceful. C. It was just as usual. D. It was attractive. 6. How did the author feel when receiving her granddaughters’ letters? A. Disappointed. B. Regretful. C. Delighted. D. Embarrassed. 7. Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. A. Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B. mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C. CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D. A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. 12. C 13. B 14. D 15. But Emily and Anna were much closer to each other. As Emily’s father passed away when she was 12 and lived only with her mother, she just considered Anna her family. So although Emily was surrounded by Lily and Bella, she needed Anna by her side. However, to her great disappointment, Anna wasn’t there. “Where is Anna? Where has she gone?” asked Emily. “She rushed out just now. But she didn’t tell us where she went,” replied Bella. Hearing Bella’s words, Emily started to feel angry towards her friend. She had fever and was in pain. How could she just went out without any explanation? She started thinking Anna was selfish and decided not to talk to her any more. In the evening, Anna finally returned. But Emily just refused to talk to her until her mother called to ask about her health. “How are you feeling, my dear?” asked Emily’s mother. “I’m much better now mom. But how do you know I’m having a fever?” Emily didn’t know why her mother had known her illness. “I called you this morning. I fell off the ladder when I was trying to repair the roof, but you didn’t answer. Then I called Anna and told her what had happened. She said you were asleep because of the fever. And she just rushed to our house and took me to the hospital. But don’t worry, the doctor had checked me. There is nothing serious and I just need some rest.” 46. consider ring surprise leave kind especial write attend comfortable proud disappoint anger Emily was seriously ill and ______ by Bella and Lily. ↓ → Emily felt weak and ______ . ↓ These four girls got on well with each other and Emily was ______ close to Anna. ↓ → Emily became very ______ when knowing Anna didn’t stay with her. ↓ Bella said Anna ______ without explaining why. ↓ → Emily became ______ with Anna and ______ her to be selfish. ↓ Emily’s mother ______ her, telling her about the accident and Anna’s ______ . → Emily was ______ that her mother knew she was ill. 47. These four were always together. But Emily and Anna were much closer to each other.(Emily, Bella, Lily和Anna是室友和朋友。 根据第四段中的“However, to her great disappointment, Anna wasn’t there.(然而,令她非常失望的是,Anna不在现场。)” 根据第六段“‘She rushed out just now. But she didn’t tell us where she went,’ replied Bella.(Bella回答说:‘她刚才冲了出去。 根据第七段中的“Hearing Bella’s words, Emily started to feel angry towards her friend.(听到Bella的话,Emily开始对她的朋友感到愤怒。)”和“She started thinking Anna was selfish and decided not to talk to her any more.(她开始认为Anna很自私,决定不再和她说话。)” 根据第八段中的“But Emily just refused to talk to her until her mother called to ask about her health.(但Emily就是拒绝和她说话,直到她的母亲打电话询问她的健康状况。)” 根据倒数第二段中的“But how do you know I’m having a fever?(但你怎么知道我发烧了?)” 故填was attended;uncomfortable;especially;disappointed;had left;angry;considered;rang;kindness;surprised。 根据最后一段中妈妈的话“I called you this morning. I fell off the ladder when I was trying to repair the roof, but you didn’t answer. Then I called Anna and told her what had happened. She said you were asleep because of the fever. And she just rushed to our house and took me to the hospital. But don’t worry, the doctor had checked me. There is nothing serious and I just need some rest.(我今天早上给你打电话。 可知,妈妈告诉Emily自己从梯子上摔下来了,Anna自己跑到她家帮妈妈送到医院检查,最终医生确定妈妈没事,由此可推测出,Emily会对妈妈摔下来感到担心,对Anna帮妈妈感到感激,并结合第七段中的“She started thinking Anna was selfish and decided not to talk to her any more.(她开始认为Anna很自私,决定不再和她说话。)” She might be worried about her mother, grateful to Anna and ashamed of herself. 根据第七段中的“She started thinking Anna was selfish and decided not to talk to her any more.(她开始认为Anna很自私,决定不再和她说话。)”和第八段“In the evening, Anna finally returned. But Emily just refused to talk to her until her mother called to ask about her health.(晚上,Anna终于回来了。 She might talk to Anna and apologize to her sincerely. Anna might forgive Emily and the two might become even closer to each other. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Jimmy, Is everything going smoothly with you recently?
