A 19-year-old independent artist, Omar Banos, is making’ waves as Cuco, a self-produced multi-instrumentalist and singer. Omar Banos’ approach to music is simple. He just wants to make the music he would listen to himself. Most of the time, that idea shows in his fast hip-hop beats and jazzy electric guitar solos.
Banos, who has released two self-produced albums, has been aspiring to music. He always wanted to play the guitar, and picked it up in high school before expanding his talent to the trumpet and French horn. “I’m very committed to my instruments,” Banos said. “If an instrument is right in front of me, and nobody has time to teach me, I just teach myself.” The same is true for his dreamy production. At 16, Banos got his hands in his first music-editing software, and he has developed a range of techniques.
Banos switches between English and Spanish, singing with his pleasant and warm lilt. “When I’m writing, I just put myself in a place, in a certain time period in my life,” he said, “songs just come out very naturally.”
Though Banos’ soft sound might encourage daydreaming, the independent artist is keeping his feet firmly on the ground during his breakthrough. “I feel I’m watching myself take off, but my brain is still on the ground,” he said. “This all happened so quickly. I didn’t even have time to get ready!”
Banos adds that despite his success, he isn’t always recognized as Cuco. “I will wear Vans, and sometimes people will get confused. They will ask whether I’m sure I’m there to perform. I guess I don’t look like an artist,” he said.
4. Why did Banos make music in the beginning?
A. To entertain himself. B. To kill his dull time.
C. To make himself well-known. D. To improve his skill in music.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Banos’ high school life. B. Banos’ learning methods.
C. Banos’ achievements in music. D. Banos’ great interest in music.
6. Which of the following can best describe Banos?
A. Honest and careful. B. Efficient and faithful.
C. Creative and low-key. D. Devoted and warm-hearted.
7. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Banos has made himself take off B. Banos will continue daydreaming
C. A genius learned music in high school D. A famous singer keeps pursuing his dream

Intelligence makes for better leaders. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or anything like that requires intelligence. But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting.
Decades ago, Dean Simonton, a psychologist from the University of California, Davis, came up with that brilliant leaders’ words may simply go over people’s heads, that their solutions could be more complicated to carry out and that followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in Journal of Applied Psychology.
The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries across fields including banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests and each was rated (划分等级) on the leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight co-workers. The IQ positively correlated (相互关联) with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics — up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings decreased. The researchers suggest the “ideal” IQ could be higher to 140 or lower to 100 in various fields, depending on whether technical or social skills are more valued in a given work culture.
“It’s an interesting and thoughtful paper,” says Paul Sackett, a management professor at University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research. “To me, the right interpretation (理解) of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand it is what high-IQ leaders do that leads to lower understanding by followers,” he says. “The wrong interpretation would be ‘Don’t hire high-IQ leaders’.”
The study’s lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to use creative language that will persuade and inspire others — the way former U. S. President Barack Obama did. “I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence properly and still connect with people, ” Antonakis says, “is to speak in charming ways.”
8. According to the first paragraph, we know that __________.
A. well-known leaders show the highest IQ
B. effective business depends on the intelligence of leaders
C. leaders with a higher IQ may do harm to teams
D. the higher IQ leaders have, the stronger leadership they have
9. According to Simonton, managers with an IQ of about are probably the most efficient.
A. 80 B. 100
C. 120 D. 140
10. What is Paul Sackett’s attitude towards hiring high-IQ leaders?
A. Unconcerned. B. Positive.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
11. Why did Antonakis mention Barack Obama in the last paragraph?
A. To encourage us to learn more about leadership.
B. To explain how intelligent people achieve success.
C. To show creativity is more important than intelligence.
D. To emphasize the importance of using intelligence properly.

There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier, "Paper or plastic?"Well, which type of bag would you choose?
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment, it has long been supposed that paper bags are kinder. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production.
And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times higher. Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded. Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example, a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags. People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag, and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There’s no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However, we don’t seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so, cloth bags are a better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do? How should we answer the question of “Paper or plastic?” It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: “What can I do to help the environment?”
12. The question at the end of Paragraph 1 is used to ________.
A. introduce points for discussion
B. tell readers how to save money
C. express the author's doubts
D. show the kindness of the cashier
13. Compared with plastic bags, paper bags ________.
A. take more time to break down
B. require less energy to recycle
C. need more water to produce
D. have less influence on forests
14. The underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 3 probably means "________".
A. share B. put forward
C. discuss D. give up
15. Which question does the author probably hope the cashier ask?
A. Paper or cloth?
B. A new bag or your own one?
C. A small bag or big one?
D. Paper or plastic?

Tips to Create Great Readers
Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously, children don’t enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction.____16____Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit.
____17____The most critical moment in reading instruction is when children get something wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits. Intervene (干预) with a targeted question, such as “How does this part of the text help you understand this character?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and build great ones in their place.
Build habits at the moment of writing. Just like adults, children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others.____18____For example, children can first have a discussion about what they’re reading by answering a focus question in writing: “What is the author trying to teach us in this story?”____19____By doing this, you can get a better understanding of what guidance the children will need during the discussion.
Build habits at the moment of reading. Independent reading time is important for any reading programme. It’s a chance for children to put together everything they’ve learnt in reading lessons and fly using their own wings.____20____So providing a rich class library and letting children know that they are expected to read for the entire period will ensure their success as lifelong independent readers.
A. Build habits at the moment of error.
B. Make sure children fall in love with reading.
C. Then, you can review their written responses.
D. They grow into great readers by learning great habits.
E. But it only works if they really do spend that time reading.
F. Specific lines or phrases from the text help to reveal that information.
G. Therefore, you can develop their writing and reading skills at the same time.

47. Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray (流浪) dog, until he came to me.
I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.
It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the lite one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?
I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.
The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest "Shall we keep him with us?" I questioned my mom.
Like any other parents would, my parents first tally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.
Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.
Para. 1:
One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2:
Almost a year later one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A 5. D 6. C 7. D

D
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

如文中常用refer to,be called或that’s to say, such as等。②逻辑猜词可以根据同义词、反义词、因果关系词等猜测词义,例如,similarly, the same as, but, however, while, on the other hand, since ,because等,所猜词与这些提示词前/后面部分的含义一样、相反或是前因后果。
Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper"可知,回收塑料比回收纸要更节约能源,故"the idea that paper bags are more environment friendly than plastic ones"可能很快会被放弃,故选D。

Just like adults children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others.____18____For example, children can first have a discussion about what they’re reading by answering a focus question in writing: “What is the author trying to teach us in this story?”____19____By doing this, you can get a better understanding of what guidance the children will need during the discussion.

根据上文“Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously, children don’t enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction. (伟大的阅读者是天生的还是培养出来的?显然,孩子们进入这个世界时并不知道如何理解文本或做出推断)”和下文“Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit. (这里有一些建议,可以让孩子们养成良好的习惯)”可知,伟大的阅读者不是天生的,而是通过习惯培养而成的。D项“They grow into great readers by learning great habits.(他们通过学习伟大的习惯而成长为伟大的读者)”切题,they指代上文提到的children。
再根据下文“The most critical moment in reading instruction is when children get something wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits. Intervene (干预) with a targeted question, such as “How does this part of the text help you understand this character?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and build great ones in their place. (阅读教学中最关键的时刻是孩子们做错了什么。如果孩子继续错误地练习技能,他或她会养成更弱的习惯。用一个有针对性的问题进行干预,比如“文本的这一部分如何帮助你理解这个角色?”这样做可以防止不良习惯扎根,并在它们的位置上建立良好的习惯)可知,要在孩子出错时引导他/她养成正确的习惯。A项“Build habits at the moment of error. (在出差错的时候养成习惯)”切题,该项中的the moment of error与下文中的something wrong相吻合,故选A。
根据上文“Just like adults, children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others (就像成年人一样,学生们用写作来收集他们对文本的想法,并将他们的想法传达给其他人)”可知,学生用写作表达自己对文本的理解,并将想法传达给别人。 G项“Therefore, you can develop their writing and reading skills at the same time. (因此,你可以同时发展他们的写作和阅读技巧)”切题,由Therefore可知前后是一种因果关系,故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“For example, children can first have a discussion about what they’re reading by answering a focus question in writing:“What is the author trying to teach us in this story?” (例如,孩子们可以首先通过书面回答一个焦点问题来讨论他们正在阅读的内容:“作者在这个故事中试图教我们什么?”)”中的first推知,空处应陈述接下来该怎么做。C项“Then, you can review their written responses. (然后,你可以回顾他们的书面回复)”切题,then呼应上文的first。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Independent reading time is important for any reading programme. It’s a chance for children to put together everything they’ve learnt in reading lessons and fly using their own wings. (独立阅读时间对任何阅读计划都很重要。这是一个机会,让孩子们把他们在阅读课上学到的一切汇集在一起,用自己的翅膀飞翔)”可知,只有当孩子花时间独立阅读时,才会真正地形成阅读习惯。E项“But it only works if they really do spend that time reading. (但只有当他们真的花时间阅读时才会起作用)”切题。故选E。

第二节(满分25分)
Para. 2:
Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg. Days passed on and one evening when Spotty returned from his long walk, he appeared very exhausted. He came to my room and sat near me. It was then that I saw his hind leg was injured and was bleeding. I called out my mother and she quickly tied a bandage around his leg and gave him food to eat. I was very upset. But the next day, Spotty was up to his usual pranks though he limped a bit. After this incident my relation with Spotty became more intense. I really admired him a lot for his courage.
Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly. We came out and saw that he was barking continuously heading somewhere. After some time Spotty became quiet. I patted him on his back and came inside. The next day morning, my heart skipped a beat when I didn't see Spotty. I searched for him in each and every corner but he was nowhere. And this time he had gone and would never come back. I cried and waited for him. We waited for one long week. But there were no signs of him. Then one day my Dad got transferred to Mumbai. We shifted back to Mumbai. What would have happened to Spotty? Would he have died? These were the only questions in my mind, but they all remained unanswered forever.
It was then that I saw his hind leg was injured and was bleeding. We came out and saw that he was barking continuously heading somewhere. But the next day, Spotty was up to his usual pranks though he limped a bit.
