The school year began. As president of the recycling club, Scott was thinking about new activities to encourage other students to become more enthusiastic (热心的) about recycling. His club had helped to recycle a lot of waste for the past five years and he hoped that this year they would do even better.
Scott went home one day and looked online, hoping to find ideas for events the club could organize at school. During his research, he learned that the amount (数量) of electronic waste, or e-waste, is increasing rapidly. Scott was upset with himself for not noticing this problem sooner. At that moment, he began to develop a plan.
“There is a special project I want us to work on this term,” Scott announced (宣布) at the recycling club meeting the next day. “We have all heard about e-waste, but recently I learned about the bad effects it’s having on our environment.” He went on to tell the club members that he wanted them to organize an e-waste drive—a day when students and their families could drop off unwanted electronics to be recycled. “Now let’s get to work!”
For several weeks, the recycling club was busy preparing for the upcoming e-waste drive, or e-drive as it was soon called.
The big day finally arrived, and Scott was nervous. He and the other members arrived at school early to make sure that everything would go smoothly. Everyone waited eagerly, hoping that students of the school would take part in the event.
It wasn’t long before the first cars pulled into the school parking lot. After a while, more people arrived. Phones, TV sets, computers and keyboards soon began piling up (堆积) .

(2023·北京·中考真题)Betty was excited to show her brother David the basket filled with seashells. But David was busy helping Dad get everything back into the car. “What are you going to do with those useless things?” he said. “You can’t take them home.”
“But I want these seashells,” Betty said unhappily. “Each one is a different shape and size. They are all special.”
Suddenly, David saw the water rising along the beach. He shouted to Betty, “The waves (海浪)are about to take your toys!” As Betty ran to get her things, she called to David, “Please put my seashells into the car!”

I joined a band (乐队)as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the drum and meeting new friends. At first it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t keep pace (节奏)with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, singled me out to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt ashamed (羞愧的)as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of practicing that I didn’t care about doing it right.
“Are you giving up on me. Steve?” Angie asked.
“Yes, I am,” I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room where I cried out. Then she came in and said. “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it!” She told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right—by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself.
With her comfort, I decided to go on practicing. However, I still couldn’t play well. Knowing my difficulties, my teammates gave me a hand. They spent about three more hours practicing with me every week. Thanks to their support and help, I began to keep pace with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show.
In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted and made great progress. I love everyone in the band. I can’t imagine what my school life would be like without them.

School Gardens Could Help Children Try More Vegetables
It’s not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening program in schools can increase children’s vegetable intake(摄入量) .
How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grades 3-5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
The Benefits Children Could Get
The study found that vegetable intake if the children who grew their own produce increased greatly across the year. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic diseases(慢性疾病). Not only are there benefits to health, increasing the variety of vegetables children are exposed(接触)to may also make mealtimes much easier.” Children who are often exposed to a variety of vegetables are more likely to try new foods,” explains Dr. Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food.
28
Any opportunity to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest,” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful messages. Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.
Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.
13.What did children do in the gardening program?
A.They did research on new plants. B.They grew fresh produce at school.
C.They took home green vegetables D.They built gardens for their classes.
14.Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragaph4?
A.Ideas to Encourage Children to Cook at Home
B.Ways to Expose Children to Vegetables at Home
C.Reasons Why Parents Should Understand Children
D.Suggestions Which Children Could Get from Parents
15.What can we learn from the program?
A.Parents’ support might improve children’s reading.
B.School programs could develop students’ creativity.
C.Doing studies can prepare students for future learning.
D.Hands-on experience may influence children’s preference.
(2021·北京·中考真题)When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned(指派) to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn’t play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, “Shelley, now you can color at any time.”
Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn’t know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn’t give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a battle(战役) for me and I fought back tears so people wouldn’t know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable. She said, “Thank you.” From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.
Looking back at this, I’m in awe(惊叹), because all I did was to help her realize that she wasn’t alone. I didn’t ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story.

(2020·北京·中考真题)There are millions of recipes(菜谱) hidden in the boxes and hearts of grandmother and parents. These family recipes are a special part of our family history. Some of them have been passed down from generation(一代人) to generation.
“I realized I couldn't go home every weekend for my mom's delicious dishes,” says Shreya, who is about to enter university. Shreya has recently started following her mother around the kitchen, taking notes on how to make her “masala chai” and tasty kachoris.
"Those special tastes can immediately unlock a whole flood of emotions, memories and feelings of family, love, and comfort," says she.
She adds, "I am looking to the day when my kids will come to know of their grandmothers through the dishes they cooked."
But many of us find it difficult to keep the food connection with our busy life. Even if we have time, not many of us take the effort to collect and record the recipes from our grandmothers and parents. We often get a recipe on the phone and take it down quickly on a piece of paper. We just stick it onto the fridge for a week or two and forget about it as soon as the paper disappears from there.
Actually, there are simple ways to keep family recipes, Scrapbooks(剪贴薄)are easily found in the market. You can even add photos to record every detail of your memories about the recipe. With the help of some popular apps like Story Scans, recording family recipes has never been easier. What is needed is to scan(扫描) the recipes and record the story behind each of them. It can become the most meaningful work you have ever done with and for your family.
Keeping family recipes is saving and honoring our tradition so that future generations can continue to make family ties stronger. Every time you remember your loved ones, recreate one of the dishes from your collection and let the memories from the good old days comfort you. So why not gift your kids a family recipe book when they are starting a new life?

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, a phone, or other supplies (供给).
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried to calm down. He thought about all the survival (求生) shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use. He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out. The first thing he did was to find shelter (庇护所) from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperatures would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a lot of snow and dug out a hole in the middle to stay warm.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby river so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled (蜷缩).
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

A Secret Code
“See you at Open House tonight, Amy,” my friend Evelyn shouted from the school bus window. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!”
“OK!” I called back, I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear?
And I wanted Evelyn to visit my house one day, then she'd see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings, and our TV is always set to show the captions (字幕). Would Evelyn think my house is strange?
When darkness fell, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school, which looked different at night. It felt different, too, as we walked down the hallway to my classroom.
We stopped in front of the notice board in the hall.
“Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud. She does that when she's excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us in surprise and I wanted to hide.
Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and explained that my parents are deaf.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Mom said, signing.
Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door.
“Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said suddenly.
I turned around, “Hi.”
“I didn’t know your parents are deaf,” she said.
“Yeah.” I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“And you can talk to them with your hands? That's so cool!”
“You think so?” I asked, feeling relieved (如释重负).
Evelyn nodded. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime?”
I smiled. “Of course.”
Then I got my parents’ attention. “Mom, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like you to meet my friend Evelyn and her mom.”

When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he’d walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice: “Whatever is wrong will pass. You’re going to be OK, just hang on.” He then smiled again and walked away.
I can’t explain the effect of that man’s unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I’d lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I’ve never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything. Grandma laughed. “I’ve wondered that for many years.”
They were sitting on the beach watching Grandpa and some of his friends in the ocean.
“None of my friends even knows what a waveski is,” Carter continued.
“Just tell them it’s a lot like surfing (冲浪), but the riders sit on top of a waveski. When the waves come, they will ride the wave just like a surfer, only they paddle to get out to the waves.”
“Nobody’s grandpa does this.”
Grandma laughed. “Well, what should he be doing instead?”
“I don’t know. Maybe things that old people do.”
“Look! A big wave is coming in!” Grandma pointed to the ocean.
Carter saw Grandpa in front of his friends. He was leaning (倾斜) forward and paddling hard, just ahead of the large incoming wave. Carter was surprised at how hard Grandpa was paddling and how fast he was moving. Just then, another huge wave came. Carter jumped to his feet and held his breath. This was not good. What if something bad happened?
As the wave drew near, Grandpa paddled harder. He was suddenly lifted by the water and stopped paddling. He leaned toward the wave, changing the direction of the waveski. Now, he was riding the wave, moving fast. Carter was amazed. Grandpa was totally in control.
Carter now realized his grandpa wasn’t weird at all. He was amazing. Absolutely amazing! “Go Grandpa!” Carter shouted, even though he knew Grandpa couldn’t hear him.
When the wave was gone, Grandpa turned toward the beach and waved to Carter and Grandma. He looked so happy.

A.Parents’ support might improve children’s reading.

(2024·北京·一模)The boy made it!

If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope.

(2024·北京海淀·一模)“Why can’t Grandpa just be normal? Why does he take waveski as a hobby? It’s so weird (怪异的),” Carter asked Grandma.
