1个 Music or not while studying?学 习的时候要听音乐吗? 听音乐有很多好处,它可以使人们开心,缓解压力。但是,学习的时候,到底要不要听音乐呢? 1 Music makes people relaxed. Students often choose to listen to music while studying. But does it really improve learning? 2 A study by Baruch College and Rutgers University suggests listening to music while learning is really good for some students, but for others, its not. The influence of music depends, in part, on your personality—especially, on your need for external (外部的) stimulation (刺激). People with a higher need for such stimulation get bored more easily. People with a lower need for that, however, like to improve their mental activities with music. They also find that what students experience from music depends on the interplay (相互作用) of the personality of the learner, the mental task and the music. 3 In the study, after a personality test used to know about their need for external stimulation, students were asked to find the letter “A” in lists of words and remember word pairs. They finished both tasks under one of three sound conditions: no music, simple music or complex (复杂的) music. 4 The data shows that for those with a high need for external stimulation, listening to music while learning is unwise, especially if the task is hard or the music is complex. On the simple task of finding A, such students’ scores were almost the same with simple music or worse with complex music than those for the silent condition. On the difficult task of learning word pairs, their performance was worse whenever music was played, no matter simple or complex. For those with a low need for external stimulation, however, listening to music is a good choice. On the simple task of finding A, such students’ scores were almost the same with simple music or better with complex music than those for the silent condition. On the difficult task of learning word pairs, the students’ scores were much better with both simple and complex music than those for the silent condition. 5 The results suggest that your decision to turn music on or off while learning should depend on your personality. So study environment needs adjustment. [Reading][Check] 1. What does the study in the text show? A. Music makes people relaxed. B. Listening to music improves learning. C. That's why Nate Howard insists it's always better to be prepared. 2The tattoo artist from Maine firmly believes that everyone should get first-aid training, particularly when it comes to performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (心肺复苏).After all, that's what allowed him to save a stranger's life last June. 3Nate and his wife were picking up dinner from the store when they noticed a man lying on the street. “Another guy was next to him checking his pulse and said he couldn't find it,” Nate said. Springing into action, they worked together to move the stranger out of harm's way. Then they began chest compression, continuing for five long minutes until doctors arrived. They had to use a defibrillator (除颤器) on the unconscious man several times before he stabilized, after which they rushed him to the hospital. 4One of the doctors found Nate and told him the man had suffered a massive heart attack. Nate said, “He then shook my hand and congratulated us for saving this complete stranger, and said had we not been there and acted as fast as we had, that he would have absolutely not made it.” 5The next day,Nate visited Stephen, the stranger whose life he helped save,in the hospital after Stephen's family contacted him. When he arrived,he learned that Stephen is a super awesome and incredibly funny person who gives New Year gifts to a lot of kids in Poland each year. 6He also discovered that Stephen had a life-threatening condition called ventricular fibrillation (心室颤动).As a result, his heart stopped beating three times in the hospital. If it hadn't been for Nate's help, the doctors said Stephen probably would have died. 7Since then,Nate has shared his story online to inspire others to take a CPR class.“You never know what kind of situation might unfold at any moment,” he said.“Simply knowing what to do might be the difference between someone going home to their family or not.” Reading Check 1.What profession is Nate Howard? Her owner, Natasha Ambler, fitted her with a GPS tracking device. But Nala's favorite place to visit is the Steven age railway station where she delights commuters (上下班往返的人) every day. 3Nala,who loves to perch on ticket barriers, has been praised for helping to build a sense of community among the commuters. She comes morning and evening to greet hundreds of people who use the station. Ambler said that Nala comes when it is the busiest time because she loves the attention. 4The staff at the station, including Shaun Smith,Great Northern's station manager, have grown very fond of Nala. He said, “She's breaking down barriers by making people smile and starting cheerful conversations between staff and customers—helping our team and our commuters at the station feel part of the local community, which is rewarding for everyone.” 5Nala wears a collar with her name and the owner's details, but Ambler said that she was receiving around 20 calls a day from people telling her they found her cat.She had to make a second tag to tell people that Nala was not lost, and she was just on an adventure.Nala usually just visits the station and a local park but on some days she travels far and wide.“Once she spent most of the night in a cinema and a friend had to go and bring her home,” Ambler said. 6Nala is so popular that Ambler set up a page where people can post photos of their encounters with the cat.One woman posted,“She makes my morning when I get the train to work.” Another said,“Aww,Nala is simply beautiful. The only real celebrity of Stevenage.” 7When asked if she had any concerns about her cat's adventures,Ambler said,“Not at all, she's obviously well-loved and she's very happy doing what she does—I just hope one day she doesn't actually try to get on a train.” Reading Check 1.Where does Nala like to visit frequently?
