As the summer beat builds, we couldn’t help but wonder: Is there anybody in the world who doesn’t love ice cream? Ice cream may be universally appealing, but many countries have their own versions.
Frozen Custard, United States
Different from frozen yogurt, which is made with cultured (人工的) yogurt and sugar, frozen custard is a combination of milk, cream, sugar and eggs. When it comes to its flavors, Americans typically have a choice between vanilla or chocolate. Dairy Queen, the Midwest fast food restaurant chain, and Culver’s and Carvel are all popular to-go spots in the US.
Raspado, Mexico
While snow cones (雪糕筒) are made using massive sweet syrup (糖浆), raspados have real fruits or fresh fruit juices. The sweet and cold treat is common throughout Mexico and sold at street carts. You won’t find Mexicans eating their raspados in cones. They’re only served in cups.
Gelato, Italy
Italian gelato is lower in fat than traditional ice cream and mixed with whole milk, eggs, sugar and flavoring. In Italy, gelato is served using a spatula (小铲子) that presses the cool treat into a cup or cone. Finardi’s go-to in Milanis probably the best shop in Italy which specializes in chocolate flavors.
Dondurma, Turkey
Dondurma is made with milk and sugar. The sellers usually offer flavors such as vanilla and melon. Buying dondurma is like watching a performance. The men who sell it wear traditional Turkish costume and hat, twist and turn the ice cream until it lands to a cone. Kids and adults get a kick out of the show. If you want to taste it, you can buy their dondurma from a street cart or at a fair.
31. Which ice cream may attract chocolate lovers?
A.Frozen custard and Gelato. B. Raspado and Gelato.
C. Frozen custard and Dondurma. D. Gelato and Dondurma.
32. What is special about Dondurma?
A. Its flavors. B. Its ingredients. C. Its producing process. D. Its selling way.

He Zehui, a Chinese nuclear physicist, accomplished great achievements in physics and became an outstanding scientist.
Her family is famous for producing three famous women scientists, including her two sisters. She graduated from Tsinghua University in 1936 with a degree in physics, and then went to study at the Technical University of Berlin, where she was the top in her class, outperforming her future husband Qian Sanqiang— China’s “father of the atomic bomb”. In 1940, she earned a Ph.D. in Engineering.
The couple made great discoveries in the field of uranium fission (铀核裂变), which drew global attention and earned them worldwide reputations, also marking a milestone in the development of China’s experimental fission physics. Many Western media called the couple the “Marie Currie and Pierre Curie of China”.
As one of the pioneers in Nuclear science and technology in China, Professor He contributed a great deal to nuclear physics. During the 1950s, she started the research and development of nuclear emulsions (核乳胶) in China and their research reached the advanced world level at that time. He and her research group took the lead in building China’s first nuclear reactor and accelerator. She was awarded the first Award of the National Prize of Natural Sciences for making outstanding achievements in supporting the national program of nuclear weapon development.
Throughout her career, He conquered many obstacles, and was always on the front lines of China’s science -related work. She published dozens of papers yet placed little value on personal fame. The world’s top physicists recognized her as a famous scientist, “Chinese Madame Curie”.
He passed away in Beijing in 2011 at the age of 97, nearly 20 years after Qian Sanqaing. She dedicated herself to science, living a simple life, always nurturing young researchers and maintaining the highest standards that she had always valued. She loved her country and science; to both she is now an icon.

An energy-costs rise across Europe, some people are taking an opportunity to head off to warmer climates in order to cut down on bills. Greece is one of a number of countries trying to draw visitors in for the winter — with a $20 million advertising campaign.
Famous for its sun, golden beaches and medieval city, the island of Rhodes in the south Aegean Sea is a magnet (有吸引力的地方) for northern Europeans. More than three million flock to the island every summer, but some also come in winter.
In order to capitalize on the energy crisis, the Greek government launched some winter tourism campaigns aimed at attracting European visitors seeking an alternative to the bitter cold and high energy bills. Places like Santorini, Crete and Rhodes were high on the list, as temperatures there remain in the high teens.
However, the campaign to advertise Greece abroad hasn’t attracted as many visitors as expected. “The campaign from the ministry is in the right direction —I think they’re doing things right,” says Dionissis Tsiligiris, tourism marketing director for the Rhodes Palace hotel and convention center in Rhodes. “But when it comes to winter tourism, Spain will always be the first choice,” Tsiligiris continues. Hotels and tour operators there just have more exposure. So competing for winter tourism is very difficult, as it’s a smaller market.
While it’s true that fewer people travel abroad than in the summer, entering the winter market could seem quite easy when you have the two key ingredients—almost guaranteed sun and well-established tourist facilities. But what’s making it difficult, according to Ashley Quint, senior holiday designer at a UK travel agency, is the message the government is sending. “Tourist boards and local governments can over-complicate things sometimes and the message doesn’t necessarily come across. In this case, there needs to be a simple and clear message. In addition, broadening it out a little bit may be better, because we see very little here.”
It seems that making Greece a winter destination for travelers to enjoy and save might need more than just the attraction of warmer weather.
38. Why do some Europeans go to warmer countries for winter?
A. To avoid energy expense.
B. To decrease the heating fee.
C. To enjoy sunshine and beaches.
D. To explore winter travel options.
39.What mainly results in the disappointing result of Greece’s campaign?
A. Ministry’s poor marketing.
B. Operator’s limited exposure.
C. Tourists’ common preference.
D. Government’s inappropriate preference.
40.What should Greece’s campaign focus on according to Ashley Quint?
A. Sending the message globally.
B. Getting ideas easily understood.
C. Beating the potential competitors.
D. Advertising key tourist resources.
41.What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Greece Ready to Take Winter Tourist Market
B. Greece Confident to Win the Tourism Campaign
C. Greece Eager to Draw Winter Tourist to the Sun
D. Greece Determined to be a Winter Tourist Destination

NASA’s quest for new suit designs has not, however, gone well. In August 2021 Paul Martin, its inspector-general, concluded that 14 years and MYM420m had been sent for meagre (粗略的) results. Mr. Martin also said that despite NASA’s intention to double that sum over the following few years, it would still not produce spacesuits in time for a Moon landing that was then planned for 2024 (and now delayed to 2025). So learning yet again a lesson that it really ought to have taken on board by now, the agency is farming out suit design to the private sector. The idea is to come up with something that can be adapted for use both in orbit and on the lunar surface. The winner will be announced next month.
As doctor Hansen’s remark foreshadows, an important criterion of success in this competition will be a spacesuit’s flexibility. One contender is Astro, a suit proposed jointly by three firms: Collins Aerospace, of Charlotte, North Carolina; ILC Dover, of Newark, Delaware; and Oceanaeering, of Houston, Texas. Astro makes extensive use of Vectran, a synthetic (合成的) fibre tougher than the Kevlar employed in bulletproof garments. This is made using a liquid crystal polymer (聚合物) that confers both strength and the necessary flexibility. Wearers of such a suit should be able to reach up and bend down, a former astronaut who helped assemble the ISS in orbit and who is now a technologist at Collins, they could even perform press-ups, at least when gravitationally bound to the surface of the earth.
A version of Astro designed for Moonwalks would allow treks (长途跋涉) of perhaps 10km, a distance that dwarfs those managed by Apollo astronauts. This lunar hiking kit would be fitted with special boots and a “breadcrumb-trail” display on its face shield to show the occupant where he or she had been— and thus, crucially, how to get back home.
For spacewalk in Earth Orbit, however, some people question the need for suits at all. Instead, they propose miniature spacecraft fitted with thrusters (助力器) and robotic arms. Genesis Engineering Solutions, a firm in Maryland, is going down this route with what it calls the Single-Person Spacecraft (SPS).
The thrusters use compressed nitrogen, though, in an emergency, they could also tap into the craft’s air tanks. The arms were originally designed for defusing bombs, making them far more dexterous than an astronaut’s gloved hand; they can be controlled either by the spacewalker or by a remote operator. If all goes well in the SPS they will be used on Orbital Reef, a commercial space station being built by firms including Blue Origin and Sierra Space, and scheduled for launch in the late 2020s.
42.What does NASA do when they can’t produce a new suit?
A. They outsource spacesuit design to the private sector.
B. They spend 420 million dollars on its spacesuit design.
C. They double the investment in spacesuit design quickly.
D. They delay the plan to design new spacesuits until 2025.
43.Which of the following words best describe Vectran?
A.steady and fragile B. fragile and flexible.
C. strong and flexible D. firm and tenacious
44. What can a “breadcrumb-trail” display do?
A. It can show how far the astronauts travel.
B. It can show the astronaut his or her route.
C. It allows astronauts to travel 10 kilometers.
D. It allows astronauts to land fast and safely.
45. What do we know about the SPS?
A. The device’s thrusters use compressed nitrogen.
B. The device can’t apply the spacecraft’s gas tanks.
C. Its arms were originally created to mount bombs.
D. Its arms can only be controlled by the astronauts.

应用文写作(20分):
The news of the successful launch of several satellites is becoming more and more popular recently. Everyone gets excited by the news of the most recent space flights, and I also feel amazed at the photos from space. Some people argue for space exploration while others are against it. In my opinion, we should attach importance to it because of its many benefits.
To begin with, the data collected by the satellites provides us with significant information, offering reference to nearly every industry. What’s more, space exploration offers us a chance to find out more about life and the universe, thus broadening our minds and horizons.
From what have been discussed above, it can be concluded that it seems a very wise investment to go to space. Therefore, I sincerely hope that it can be carried on so as to serve as better.
