What do you think of when you hear the name Frankenstein? Perhaps you imagine a laboratory in which a mad scientist brings a monster to life with the power of lightning (闪电).
This is the story often told in movies, but the book upon which these movies are based is quite different. In the book, the scientist is not mad, and he doesn't use lightning. And although many people think Frankenstein is the name of the monster, it's actually the name of the scientist. The creature he brings to life is never given a name.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is the story of a young scientist named Victor Frankenstein, who discovers how to create new life. He makes a new creature using the body parts of dead humans and animals. But when his creature comes to life, Victor is so repulsed (使厌恶 ) by its ugly appearance that he runs away.
Although the creature looks scary——he's around 2.4 meters tall and very strong——he is actually kind, intelligent and tries to help people at first. But because he is treated very badly- -like a monster- -he decides he wants to take revenge on humans.
The book has many themes: the wonder of science, the danger of too much ambition (野心), and the importance of respect for nature——and how important it is that scientists consider the consequences (结果) of their work and take responsibility for it. Some writers have suggested that Shelley's book has lessons for scientists now developing AI.
Mary Shelley was just 18 when she began writing Frankenstein. In 1816, she was staying by Lake Geneva in Switzerland with her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and another poet called Lord Byron. Byron suggested they all write scary stories. Frankenstein became a famous Gothic (哥特式的) novel- -and some call it the first science fiction novel.

Peter had a birthday- -his tenth. Father was at work, but his sisters, Bobbie and Phyllis, and his mother all gave him presents in the morning. One of these presents was a model engine, and Peter was overjoyed.
Peter's joy didn't lasted for long because the engine suddenly went bang (巨响)! Peter was very unhappy. His sisters said he had cried, but Peter insisted his eyes were red from a cold.
After Father came home that evening, Peter told him the story of the broken engine. Mother came in and said that two gentlemen wanted to see Father. “They're in the next room," she added. “I hope they leave soon because it' 's nearly the children's bedtime."
But the visitors stayed until late. Mother told the children a story about a princess with green eyes. It was difficult for the children to listen because voices came from the next room. Father's voice sounded louder than usual.
Ruth, the maid, came in. “He wants you to go in, ma‘am," she said to Mother. “I think he's had bad news. Be ready for the worst."
So Mother went into the next room, and there was more talking. Later Mother came back, and her face was pale. "It's bedtime," she said.

“Nobody died, no," said Mother, and she almost seemed to push Bobbie away.
When the children woke up the next morning, Mother was gone. "I think something awful has happened," said Peter during breakfast. I asked Ruth, and she said we'll find out soon."

When we're in the early months or years of learning another language, it can be hard to find good novels to read.
This can be especially difficult for older learners. Novels with language that is suitable for learners are often written for young children, and may not be interesting for teenagers to read. But there are some books in English that experts think might be just right for intermediate ( 中级的) learners. Here are four of them.
Animal Farm( « 动物庄园 » ) by George Orwell
This book was published in 1945. It's quite short, and was written in a very clear way. Orwell said writers shouldn't use unnecessary words, and his story of talking animals taking over a farm is easy to follow.
No.1 Ladies ' Detective Agency (《第一女子侦探事务所》) by Alexander McCall Smith
This is the name of the first book in a series of detective stories. The series is recommended by an international language school, which says that funny characters, interesting stories and simple language make these books great for learners. The stories take place in Botswana, and there are now more than 20 books in the series.
Refugee Boy( 《难民男孩》) by Benjamin Zephaniah
English teacher Kieran Donaghy recommends this book about a young refugee who arrives in the UK from Africa. With powerful themes and simple language, Donaghy says it's a good choice for intermediate learners.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time( (《深夜小狗离奇事件》) by Mark Haddon
Donaghy also recommends this popular novel published in 2003. Although it's not really for children, it's told from the point of view of a young boy, and this means the language is easy to understand. In the book, the boy, named Christopher, tries to find out what happened to his neighbor 's dog.
