As we know, diseases such as colds or flu can move from one person to another. But do you know that feelings, like being stressed (压力), can be passed on too? Sometimes we feel very busy and stressed not only because of our own work but also because of the feelings and problems of people we are close to.
The psychologist Stephanie Preston from the University of Michigan led his team to design a study. They wanted to check if stress was passed on. In the study, people were asked to give a speech to a group of watchers. Those watchers didn’t show any feelings during the speech. That made the speakers even more stressed than if they got bad comments (评价). After a while, even the researchers started feeling stressed from just watching the speeches. This made them curious, so they decided to study more. They looked at spit samples (唾液样本) to see the stress hormone—cortisol (皮质醇激素). While speakers were stressed and had a lot of cortisol, watchers were stressed too and had a lot of cortisol as well. They named this effect (效果) “physiological resonance”. It means the speakers’ stress was passed on to the watchers.
Though they prove that stress can move from one person to another, there is still one question. Studies have looked into the speakers’ voices and faces, but they haven’t figured out how someone’s behavior causes another’s stress.
When we talk or hang out with other people, we notice different signs showing their feelings. Those help us know if there’s something wrong around us. If our neighbor seems stressed, we should watch out as it might affect (影响) us too. This ability to sense stress comes from our long history of living in groups. It is not just humans who do this; animals can also tell when others around them are stressed. For example, if a deer senses stress in its pack, it may run away to avoid (避免) danger. So quickly spotting (发现) stress in others can help us. It keeps us away from problems before they get worse.
24.How did Preston’s team find that stress could move from one person to another?
A.By looking at faces. B.By listening to voices.
C.By talking about feelings. D.By checking cortisol in spit.
25.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People feel stressed only because of their own work.
B.Only humans can sense when someone else is stressed.
C.Researchers feel stressed when preparing for the research.
D.Noticing stress in others early may help us avoid trouble.
26.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Can Stress Help Us Avoid Trouble?
B.Can Stress Move from One to Another?
C.How Does Action Cause Others’ Stress?
D.How to Give A Speech without Stress?

Many kids help parents to do chores in the house. They may take out the trash, walk the dog or clean the floor. In return, some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as 20 minutes to play computer games.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Jane Smith, a parenting educator and family coach(指导). She believes if kids get rewards, they may think that work isn’t worth(值得)doing unless you get something in return. For example, kids won’t clean the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will do it if their parents reward them for it.
“Every house is a team effort(努力),” Jane said. “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have a responsibility(责任)to keep our home clean.”
Other people have different ideas. They believe that money or other rewards encourage kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn about how we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital(电子的)gifts that can be used either online or in life. With the Chore Monster, kids get digital points after they do chores. Kids can exchange(交换)their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the shop.” Our goal is to encourage kids to do chores so they can get rewards, “ says Joe Black, the founder(创始人)of Chore Monster.” Kids need positive(积极的)power to make them do chores.”

【答案】24.D 25.D 26.B
【导语】本文主要介绍了关于压力是否会从一个人转移到另一个人的研究。
24.细节理解题。根据“They looked at spit samples (唾液样本) to see the stress hormone—cortisol (皮质醇激素). While speakers were stressed and had a lot of cortisol, watchers were stressed too and had a lot of cortisol as well”可知,他们通过检查唾液中的皮质醇发现压力可以从一个人转移到另一个人的。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据“So quickly spotting (发现) stress in others can help us. It keeps us away from problems before they get worse.”可知,及早发现别人的压力可以帮助我们避免麻烦。故选D。
26.最佳标题题。根据“As we know, diseases such as colds or flu can move from one person to another. But do you know that feelings, like being stressed (压力), can be passed on too?”可知,文章主要介绍了关于压力是否会从一个人转移到另一个人的研究,故选B。

27.The word “rewards” in paragraph 1 means ________.
A.reasons B.prizes C.shows D.excuses
28.Jane Smith thinks that ________.
A.housework isn’t worth doing B.parents should do chores at home
C.kids should get something in return D.kids shouldn’t get rewards for doing chores
29.What’s the purpose of the apps mentioned in the passage?
A.To encourage kids to do chores. B.To let kids play more video games.
C.To give kids digital points and gifts. D.To make kids keep their home clean.
【答案】27.B 28.D 29.A
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要谈论了孩子做家务应不应该给予奖励的问题,有些人认为做家务给予奖励会让孩子淡漠家庭责任,有些人认为可以给孩子奖励。
27.词句猜测题。根据前面“In return”和后文“such as 20 minutes to play computer games”可知,孩子们通过做家务可以从父母那里得到钱或其他的奖励,故划线部分意为“奖励”。故选B。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段中“But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Jane Smith, a parenting educator and family coach(指导). She believes if kids get rewards, they may think that work isn’t worth(值得)doing unless you get something in return.”可知,简•史密斯认为孩子们做家务不应该得到报酬。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据第五段开始“Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores.”可知,短文中提到应用程序的目的是为了鼓励孩子们做家务。 故选A。
D

33.4.细节理解题。根据文中最后一段“And the most important lesson we learned was: One can’t judge (判断) a person , or a team only by their clothes.”我们学到的最重要的教训是:不能只看他们的衣着来判断一个人或一个团队。故选D。

The last time I visited my grandpa, he gave me a beautiful old hardcover book that had been his favorite when he was a kid. When I showed it to my friend Ollie, he said, “Whoa! The wolf picture is awesome!”
“I have to 13 this!” Ollie said, “Is it OK if I borrow it?”
“Um, I guess so,” I said. “As long as nothing happens to it.”
“I promise,” he said. “I’ll return it in 14 condition in one week.”
One week went by, then two weeks, then three. It seemed that Ollie forgot all about it. I decided to go to his house and see what was up.
“Well, this is a nice surprise.” Ollie’s grandmother, Abuela, greeted me.
The minute Ollie saw me, he stared at the 15 . Then he started talking a mile a minute. “I’m really, really sorry I haven’t gotten the book back to you. The truth is, I mean…”
“Yes?” I said.
“…lost your grandfather’s book,” he said in a 16 voice.”
“Wait!” My heart pounded. “You’re kidding, right?”
Ollie shook his head. “I’ve looked everywhere! I had put it on this table, but when I came back, it had disappeared into thin air.”
I felt sorry for Ollie, but I felt sorrier for myself. Before I could help it, my eyes filled with 17 .
“I looked online.” said Ollie, “And if I 18 up my chore money for two years, four months, and five days, I can afford a first-edition copy that looks almost exactly like yours.”
“Hang on,” said Abuela. “You left Sam’s book on this table?”
Ollie nodded.
“Well, I was gathering up some odds and ends (零碎物品) to take to the garage sale,” said Abuela, “There’s a 19 I accidentally put it into the donation box.”
