W:About half a month. Then I stayed in America for about ten days.
M:Have you noticed any table manners?
W:Yes. And some of them are really strange.
M:Strange? Why?
W:People can make some noise while eating noodles in Japan.
W:You must be excited about staying in France now, Steve!
M:No, in fact I'm a little nervous.
W:Why?
M:Well, I don't know how to act at the dinner table.
W:Oh, I see. Well, one example is that you're not supposed to put your bread on
your plate. You're supposed to put it on the table.
M:That's pretty strange.
W:Another example is that you're not supposed to eat anything with your hands ex-
cept bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with a fork.
M:Oh, OK.
W:Oh, and there's one more thing you need to know. It is impolite to say you're

Different countries have different table manners. In Italy, don't put cheese on the
top of your pizza. Never ask for cheese if it's not offered. Don't ask for milk after
you have eaten meat. If you eat meat and then drink milk during a meal, your stom-
ach will be upset. You can ask for a cup of coffee instead.
In America, it's important to arrive on time. Don't circle your plate with your arms
because that means you don't like the food. It's not polite to say “I'm full”. Just
put the fork and knife across the plate. You'd better not reach across the table for
anything. If the thing you want is not at hand, ask the nearest person for help.
When I first arrived in China, I knew little Chinese. And some of the Chinese
words I 16 had something to do with food. I learned the names of a few
dishes, but still didn't know most of the things I saw on Chinese restaurant menus.
Luckily, there were 17 to help me.
Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food 18 it. But
many restaurants I've been to in the US don't. What is the 19 for the
difference?
One thing I've definitely (明确地) 20 about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is in the US. A common way to 21
someone in China is to ask them if they've eaten yet. Food is just a bigger deal here
—and having pictures of food in menus is part of that. Some menus are almost like
works of art, with beautiful photos.
Another thing is the 22 of the dishes. Chinese dishes sometimes have
fanciful (别出心裁的) names like “palace guard chicken” or “three fresh things
from the soil”. These are interesting names, but they don't really tell you 23
the dishes are like. Therefore, it's 24 to have pictures so you
can actually see what you are going to eat.
There are 25 even more reasons. All I know is that I was very thankful
to have those picture menus when I first came to China years ago.

Manners are very important in our daily life. There are many different customs and
habits among different countries. We must find out and follow their customs so that
they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person
with good education does or does not do. A person with good manners is always
popular, but it is troublesome to get on with a person with bad manners.
If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door
opens, you will not move before the host says“Come in, please.” After you enter
the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup
of tea is put on the tea table before you or sent to your hand, you should say
“Thank you” and receive it with two hands, not one hand, or it seems that you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your
shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this
is not done. In a Malay house, a visitor never finishes the food on the table. He
leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a visitor always finishes
the drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. The host will be pleased with that.
You have to give your present in public in the Middle East to show it is not a bribe
But it's good manners to give your present in private in Asia. You mustn't
give knives in Latin America because it suggests that you want to cut off the person
you give knives to. You mustn't give your food or drink to Arabs because it suggests that you think your host isn't offering you enough to eat and drink.
“Come any time” means “I want you to visit me” in India. If you don't suggest
a time at once, the Indian will think you are refusing the invitation. But if an Eng-
lishman says “Come any time”, he will think you are impolite if you start fixing
(确定) a date.
( )26. It is important to learn that different countries and people have different
manners because .
A. we can eat and drink well
B. we can know what to follow when we go to other countries
C. we can be taught some good examples
D. we won't be afraid of people in those countries
B
( )27. In China, you shouldn't before the host says “Come in,
please”.
A. knock at the door B. run away
C. come into the room D. open the door
( )28. In Japan, it is good manners to before you enter the host's
house.
A. take off your shoes B. take off your coat
C. say “Thank you” D. take a rest
( )29. In a Malay house, a guest leaves a little food to show that .
A. he has enjoyed it
B. he doesn't like the food C. he needs some drink

( )30. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It's good manners to give presents in public in China.
B. It's good manners to give knives in Latin America.
C. It's good manners to give some food to Arabs.

Before entering a house in Japan, it is good
manners to take off your shoes.”
选A。

Many books have been written about the art of giving. But what about the art of receiving? Sometimes receiving a gift can be difficult, especially when someone buys
you a gift you don't want.
“I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents bought me a purple
wallet,” laughs Mary. “It really made me feel embarrassed (尴尬的), because to
be honest, I thought the wallet was really ugly! Still, I pretended (假装) that I liked
it because I knew it would make my parents happy.”
Bill agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents. A few years ago, my grandparents
gave me an orange sweater for my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited
their house, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel
guilty (内疚的). It was a very nice thought, but my grandparents and I have different
tastes! I think it's hard to buy clothes or other personal things for people.”
To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, however, receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives
me money, it just makes me think they are being lazy”, says John Wilson, “In
England, we have a saying: It's the thought that counts. I prefer to receive a gift that
has some thoughts behind it. I don't mind if it's something I don't need. If someone has thought about a gift for me, it always makes me happy.”
Different people have very different thoughts on this subject! So maybe the art of
receiving is even more difficult than the art of giving. What do you think?
31. How did Mary feel when she received a purple wallet?
32. When did Bill wear the orange sweater?
33. Why do some people like to give money?
34. What gift does John Wilson like?
She felt embarrassed.
He used to wear it every time he visited his grandparents' house.
Because they needn't spend time or thought choosing a gift./Because it's easier.
He likes a gift that has some thoughts behind it.
35. If you receive a gift from your parents, but you don't like it, what will you do?
36. What's the passage mainly about?
I will thank my parents and tell them that I don't like it in a polite way.
It's about the art of receiving.

used to wear it every time I visited their house...”
33. Because they needn't spend time or thought choosing a gift./Because it's easier.
根据“To make things easier...”和“When someone gives me money, it just
makes me think they are being lazy”可知,有些人为了让送礼这件事变得更简单
34. He likes a gift that has some thoughts behind it. 根据“If someone has thought

One possible version:
Dear Tony,
I'm very happy to hear that you're coming to China next week. It is helpful for you to learn as many of the customs in China as possible. These basic manners will help you enjoy staying in China.
First of all, let me give you some suggestions about visiting the Chinese people. When you meet the Chinese people for the first time, you are supposed to shake
hands. You shouldn't kiss them. As for the table manners, it's polite to wait till ev-eryone is at the table. You shouldn't stick the chopsticks into the food. It's very impolite to point at others with your chopsticks. We have a lot of rules in our family. For example, we can't talk while eating. Besides, the most important thing is that we must be polite to old people.
I expect you to follow these rules. When you go to China, you had better remember the famous saying:When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Ming
