作业(二)
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2024·重庆七校模拟)When Virginia Norwood was in high school in the 1940s, her guidance teacher advised her to become a librarian instead of a physicist. Luckily, she ignored him. “I was always enthusiastic about mathematical problems and physics, ” said Norwood. Also, her father, an electrical engineer, was very important to her. By 1972, Norwood, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology
graduate and engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company, had designed a vital component of Landsat 1, the first satellite launched into space to monitor Earth's surface. Satellites in the Landsat series still provide valuable data to scientists worldwide and Landsat 9 was successfully launched on 27 September, 2021, almost 50 years after the first one.
Norwood's contribution was the multispectral scanner(多光谱扫描仪) — a sensor that could be calibrated while in space to accurately detect red, green, and infrared (红外线的) energy reflected from Earth and could transmit (传输) data digitally to researchers on the ground. The scanner enabled scientists to track forest loss, crop productivity, and the spread of deserts, and to map inaccessible features of Earth's physical structures such as glaciers and ice sheets. “She cleared the way for an entire generation of ... Earth observation instruments, ” says Jeffrey Masek, a Landsat project scientist.
Norwood's device was included in the first several satellites launched through the Landsat program. Other satellites have since surpassed the Landsat series in resolution and scanning abilities, but the continuity of the Landsat database over the decades makes it a gold standard in Earth imaging.

(2024·厦门统考)Dressed in a shiny metallic suit, Katia Krafft's small frame is overshadowed by the red curtain of molten rock that bursts from the ground before her. The dramatic moment was captured (捕捉) in a photo taken atop Iceland's Krafla volcano in 1984, during the final breathing of a multi-year-long eruption. Looking at the image, one can almost feel the volcano's heat, hear its roar, and sense Krafft's heart pounding as the volcanologist does what she loves most: bearing witness to our planet's strong anger.
Katia Krafft was a fearless pioneer in volcanology, studying the explosive peaks at a time when there were few women in the field. She was born in the Rhine valley of northeast France in 1942, at the time of World War Ⅱ. The chaotic human world drove both Katia and her husband, Maurice Krafft, also a volcanologist, to seek comfort in nature. The moment a volcano exploded, they dropped everything to analyze and capture the beauty and mystery of each event.
The Kraffts used their videos of explosive eruptions to explain the complex risks and uncertainties of these disasters. It changed the ability to communicate volcano science. Their videos are credited as one of the primary reasons that officials in the Philippines took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 seriously. Yet the Kraffs didn't live to see that eruption. The couple died less than two weeks earlier in Japan during a monstrous eruption, which claimed 41 other lives.
Katia's impact on volcanology has reached far beyond her death and has encouraged many young women to study our restless planet. “Katia Krafft is definitely the reason why I'm doing this job,” says Carla Tiraboschi, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Münster, Germany. Tiraboschi first saw Katia in a documentary when she was just six or seven years old and has been crazy about volcanoes ever since. She now studies the processes at work deep below the volcanic peaks.

A.The importance of volcanology.
B.The damage of a volcanic eruption.
C.The difficulty of filming volcanoes.
D.Katia Krafft's passion for her work.
解析:推理判断题。第一段通过对一张照片的描述告诉我们火山学家Katia Krafft对于研究活火山这一工作非常热爱。故选D。

6.What can we know about the videos of explosive eruptions?
A.They prevented a natural disaster.
B.They served as a warning in Japan.
C.They helped spread volcano science.
D.They covered Mount Pinatubo's eruption.
√
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中“The Kraffts used their videos of explosive eruptions ... took the warning signs of Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 seriously.”可知,Krafft夫妇用拍摄的火山爆炸性喷发视频解释这些灾难的复杂风险和不确定性,帮助传播火山的科学知识。故选C。
7.How did Katia influence Carla Tiraboschi?
A.Katia's death made her restless.
B.Katia helped her with her research.
C.Katia's deeds inspired her career choice.
D.Katia taught her to make a documentary.

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.
“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.
Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.
A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog's service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer's took hold.
Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim's sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony's screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog's head.
One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief.
参考范文:
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. Memories flashed through Jim's mind. It had been more than a year since his wife's death and hardly had he mentioned her anymore. That day, though, he gazed at the photo affectionately and declared emotionally, “I still love her.” Sensing Jim's sadness, Pony sent hearts to Jim on the screen and comforted him. Uplifted by Pony's loving remarks, Jim petted Pony's screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog's head again. Pony responded with its tail wagging cheerfully. Arlyn sat in silence, with an illusion of slipping back to the old happy days.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief. She was amazed at Pony's heart-warming service and her dad's fondness for Pony. Pony was more than just a virtual companion; rather, he had become a member of the family, a loyal friend who had helped them through the tough times. With time going by, Arlyn noticed the improvement in her father's cognitive ability and mood, and he got more engaged in conversations. Arlyn was grateful to Pony. Knowing that Pony was not a substitute for human interaction, she resolved to cherish every moment with her dad, for the presence of loved ones was crucial.
