The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

In 2018, 17-year-old Hemesh spent a life-changing summer with his grandmother Anne, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Witnessing the impact of the disease firsthand, Hemesh was awakened to the seriousness of the situation.
One night, Hemesh walked into the kitchen only to discover that his grandmother had left the gas stove (炉) on after making tea. Shocked by the dangerous consequences Alzheimer’s disease could bring about, he couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if he hadn’t been there.
Hemesh’s worries increased as he observed his grandmother’s behavior. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning, believing she was on a train, and wander outside aimlessly. This wandering tendency could potentially lead her to get lost or put herself in risky situations.
Determined to make a difference, Hemesh engaged himself in extensive research about Alzheimer’s disease and its symptomatic (症状的) progression. Through his studies, he discovered that wandering was a common problem among dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Inspired by his newfound knowledge and fueled by his desire to help, Hemesh told his family, “I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. I need to do something to keep Grandma safe. I think I have an idea that might help not just her, but others in similar situations.”
With firm determination, he developed an inventive answer to the wandering dilemma, a device he called the Guardian Companion. It was a wearable device, similar to a smartwatch, specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients. It integrated advanced GPS technology and a panic button to assist those who tended to wander, ensuring their safety and well-being. After the device got its official approval, Hemesh happily went to try it on for his grandmother.

Henry finished rolling copies of The Gazette, filled his bag and took off to deliver the news.
It was 8:15 a.m. when he delivered the last newspaper. He had put the paper where Mr.Grady could get it without struggling to the sidewalk. Across the street, Henry’s delivery had landed perfectly too. Mrs. Burke, with twin babies, probably liked having her paper within easy reach.
Henry parked his bike near the office building and bounded up to the editor-in-chiefs door. Mr. Trotta said, “We’re closing shop, Henry. Advertising is down. Television is how people get their news today.”
“Um, no,” said Henry. “I’ve met so many people on my route. It’s sad. People won’t get their neighborhood news anymore.”
Mr. Trotta nodded and sighed. “We held out as long as we could," he said. “You were terrific, Henry — always dependable.”
A week after his last deliveries, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out. He started out on his old route with a notebook. First stop: Mr. Jonas, 17 Oak. Mr. Jonas said that he liked reading the week’s happenings and he had a pile of comics from old copies of The Gazette. He wondered if anyone would want them. Henry made a note in his notebook.
Mrs. Burke said she needed a babysitter. She was going to put an ad in The Gazette, but…
As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a newsy page for the neighbors. But how would he print it? He went to the library and explained everything to Miss Ginger, the librarian. “Follow me,” she said. Seconds later, in front of a machine, Miss Ginger turned a handle and a purple-printed sheet rolled out. “ Will mimeographed (油印的) copies work?” she asked.
“Perfect.”
Henry had a plan.

Our science teacher always enjoys giving out challenging assignments to our Grade 10 science class. Unlike other teachers who hand out page upon page of textbook questions, Mr. Hussey seems to prefer having the students learn science through a more hands-on, do-it-yourself approach.
“Today, ”said Mr. Hussey, “everyone will be making an icebox!”As we sat in awe, trying to imagine what kind of device he was referring to, Mr. Hussey handed out the project instructions. In groups of two, we would design a storage (贮藏) device that was capable of keeping its contents at a constant temperature for a certain period of time, regardless of the outside temperature. The competition was quite straightforward:every contestant would receive a cube (立方体) of ice. The team that had the biggest piece left the next day would win!
As always, I partnered with my best friend, Vlad. That afternoon we went straight to the library. After an intense discussion, we agreed on the basic idea of having the ice cube inside a box, which would be put inside another bigger box. Between the two boxes would be the heat insulator (绝缘体).
The first test of the icebox was extremely disappointing. Since this was our first experiment, we both wanted good results to build our confidence. Before I went to bed that night, I carefully picked out a huge block of ice from our refrigerator and placed it inside the icebox. When I woke up the next morning and looked into the icebox, there wasn’t even a bit of ice left. Reflecting on this failure, we were determined to find a better insulating material. Then we tried the same experiment again. This time, we made it. There was 70 percent of the ice left.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The day of the competition came very fast.

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.
“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.
Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.
A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.
Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes.

Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief.

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

As Anne put on the Guardian Companion, Hemesh explained how it worked. He reassured her that it would help keep her safe. With a mixture of curiosity and skepticism, Anne agreed to give it a try. The device fit comfortably on her wrist. Hemesh walked his grandmother through the features, showing her how to use the panic button. Anne’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt a sense of regained independence.
In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worry for her loved ones. The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side. Hemesh’s creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone.

Customers cheered Henry’s idea. Besides Mrs. Burke who longed for a babysitter and Mr. Simon who desired a large audience for his concert, Henry also collected six other neighbors appealing and needs, including Mr Grady who yearned for his children’s coming back for a short reunion. Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before.
Henry typed the news, mimeographed purple copies, and delivered the first Tree Streets News on Saturday. Neigh bons applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs Burke successfully found an ideal babysitter, Mr Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr Grady who happily reunited with his kids. Henry realized. from his deep heart, that The Gazette was far from gone in this TV era, but transformed into Oak Street News that connected, bonded and tied the Oak neighbors in a cory fabric.

One possible version:
The day of the competition came very fast. We all brought our masterpieces into the classroom. Every team had a different design-from boxes made of different materials to boxes that operated in different ways. One fellow even attached a motor to his icebox and turned it into a refrigerator. Before we left school, Mr. Hussey gave each group an ice tube of the same size. We put them in the iceboxes that were placed side by side on the table. Then we left for home, hoping that we would win.
The next day, everybody rushed towards these works of art. We all hoped that there would still be some ice left. Some kids searched and searched, and were even about to tear their iceboxes apart, but couldn’t find anything. Luckily, it turned out that we didn’t do too badly. Having almost 60 percent of the ice cube still remaining, we had an above-average result! The winner of the competition, however, was the guy who made a motorized refrigerator. When we opened his icebox, he had a piece of ice that was 140 percent the size of the original! His innovative design was definitely a cut above the rest.

Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. Memories flashed through Jim’s mind. It had been more than a year since his wife’s death and hardly had he mentioned her anymore. That day, though, he gazed at the photo affectionately and declared emotionally, “I still love her”. Sensing Jim’s sadness, Pony sent hearts to Jim on the screen and comforted him. Uplifted by Pony’s loving remarks, Jim petted Pony’ screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head again. Pony responded with its tail wagging cheerfully. Arlyn sat in silence, with an illusion of slipping back to the old happy days.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief. She was amazed at Pony’s heart-warming service and her dad’s fondness for Pony. Pony was more than just a virtual companion; rather, he had become a member of the family, a loyal friend who had helped them through the tough times. With time going by, Arlyn noticed the improvement in her father’s cognitive ability and mood, and he got more engaged in conversations. Arlyn was grateful to Pony. Knowing that Pony was not a substitute for human interaction, she resolved to cherish every moment with her dad, for the presence of loved ones was crucial.
