It was very late and everyone had left the cafe except an old man who sat in the shadow
the leaves of the tree made against the electric light. In the day time the street was dusty, but
at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now
at night it was quiet and he felt the difference. The two waiters inside the cafe knew that the
old man was a little drunk, and while he was a good client they knew that if he became too
drunk he would leave without paying,so they kept watch on him.
"Last week he tried to commit suicide,"one waiter said.
"Why?"
"He was in despair."

"What about?"
"Nothing."
"How do you know it was nothing?"
"He has plenty of money."
They sat together at a table that was close against the wall near the door of the cafe and
looked at the terrace()where the tables were all empty except where the old man sat in
the shadow of the leaves of the tree that moved slightly in the wind.
"The guard will pick him up,"one waiter said.
"What does it matter if he gets what he's after?"
"He had better get off the street now.The guard will get him. They went by five
minutes ago."
The old man sitting in the shadow tapped his saucer with his glass. The younger waiter
went over to him.
"What do you want?"
The old man looked at him."Another brandy,he said.
"You'll be drunk,"the waiter said. The old man looked at him.The waiter went away.
"He'll stay all night,"he said to his colleague."I'm sleepy now.I never get into bed
before three o'clock. He should have killed himself last week."
The younger waiter took the brandy bottle and marched out to the old man's table.
"You should have killed yourself last week,"he said to the deaf man.The old man
motioned with his finger."A little more,"he said. The waiter poured on into the glass."Thank

Children who were behind in their development at age 4-5 were almost three times as
likely to have been out of cducation, cmployment,or training at age 16-17,analysis of pupil
data has found.
4-5-year-olds in England are assessed by the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, and
those who reach the boundary of a "good level of development"are considered "school
ready”.
The new study in the journal BMC Public Health has found a significant gap in Not in
Education,Employment or Training (NEET)outcomes between those who were ready and
unready for primary school. The research drew on data from more than 8,000 Bradford young
people whose records are linked as part of the Connected Bradford project. The research
found that 11%of children who were not school ready went on to be NEET at 16-17,
compared to just 4%of children who were school ready.
Lead author Dr Matthew Warburton,Research Officer at Leeds'School of Psychology,
said:"These findings tell us that there are clear, early indicators for children and young people
being at risk of disadvantage in late adolescence. As schools routinely collect this data, the
research could be used to kickstart early intervention in schools based on primary school
readiness."
The research team, which also included academics from Lancaster University and the
Bradford Institute for Health Research, say this shows a clear need for early intervention by
schools to reduce disadvantage in later life.
This echoes the message from a series of N8 Child of the North and Centre for Young
Lives reports on the need to put children and young people first.Senior author Dr Amy
Atkinson,Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University said:"Data from
the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is readily available for millions of children and
young people in England. This information could, and should,be used to identify pupils at
increased risk of becoming NEET."

Researchers say they've used cutting-edge gravitational wave research to cast new light
on a mystery---a 2000-year-old computer, the Antikythera mechanism found in shipwreck.
Well over a century after its discovery, researchers at the University of Glasgow say
they've used statistical modeling techniques, originally designed to analyze gravitational
waves-ripples in spacetime caused by major events in the universe such as two black holes
combining-to suggest that the Antikythera mechanism was likely used to track the Greek
lunar year.In short,it's a fascinating collision between modern-day science and the mysteries
of an ancient artifact.
In a 2021 paper, researchers found that previously discovered and regularly spaced holes
in a "calendar ring"were marked to describe the "motions of the sun, moon, and all five
planets known in ancient Greeks and how they were displayed at the front as an ancient Greek
universe."Now,in a new study published in the Official Journal of the British Horological
Institute,University of Glasgow gravitational wave researcher Graham Woan and research

associate Joseph Bayley suggest that the ring was likely perforated (with 354 holes,
which happens to be the number of days in a lunar year.
The team used statistical models derived from gravitational wave research,a large-scale
physics experiment designed to measure ripples in spacetime millions of light-years from
Earth and Bayesian analysis,a techniquc using probability to quantify uncertainty based on
incomplete data,to calculate the likely number of holes in the mechanism using the positions
of the surviving holes and the placement of the ring's surviving six fragments
Surprisingly, the inspiration for the study came from a YouTuber Chris Budiselic, who
has been attempting to physically recreate the ancient mechanism and investigating ways to
determine just how many holes it contained.
"It's a neat symmetry that we've adapted techniques we use to study the universe today
to understand more about a mechanism that helped people keep track of the heavens nearly
two millennia ago,"Woan said.
We hope that our findings about the Antikythera mechanism, although less
supernaturally spectacular than those made by Indiana Jones, will help deepen our
understanding of how this remarkable device was made and used by the Greeks,"Woan
sadded.
32.What was the original purpose of the statistical modeling techniques?
A.To study the Antikythera mechanism
B.To investigate ancient artifacts.
C.To track the Greek lunar year.
D.To analyze gravitational waves.
33.How did the researchers calculate the likely number of holes in the mechanism?
A.By using statistical models and Bayesian analysis.
B.By observing the mechanism directly.
C.By asking YouTuber Chris Budiselic
D.By observing the physical recreation of the mechanism.
34.The underlined term"Bayesian analysis"in paragraph 4 refer to a technique
A.to recreate an ancient mechanism.
B.to measure ripples in spacetime.
C.to calculate uncertainty based on insufficient data.
D.to calculate the positions of the surviving holes.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Modern science was ideally combined with an ancient artifact.

Look back a few hundred years and chillies were nowhere to be found in China.Unlike
Sichuan peppers, which are native to the region and widely used, chillies were brought to
China from the Americas by Portuguese and Dutch explorers only in the 16th century.
36 For at least 50 years, they were grown as decorative plants, prized for their
cheerfully bright colour and tiny white flowers, and occasionally used as medicinal herbs.
During China's last imperial period, peasants in Guizhou province started using them as a
salt alterative.37 The pepper steadily spread to other rural regions of China.
38_For a long time,la”was used to describe vicious-natured(性情恶毒的)people,
and the few people who enjoyed chillies did not boost their taste.
But the Communist revolution changed that. The chefs of nobles were out of favour, and
their traditions discontinued.39.
Industrialisation after the revolution created the largest migration in human history.
40
Chillies are now integrated into street food, fine dining and snacks in regions
with little tradition of heat.
A.At first,nobody ate chillies
B.However,Chillies were rarely grown initially.
C.From there,a new flavour was unlocked.
D.And then,chillies gained a great popularity.
E.From then on,chillies became a symbol of working class.
F.However, the strong flavor barred it from getting near the tables of upper-class families.
G.Millions of migrants poured into big cities, bringing with them the spicy flavours of home.

21.C 文中提到“If you do not see dolphins on your cruise, please contact us at 1-800-987-9852
for tickets for another dolphin cruise to be taken within 7 days of the first cruise.”
22. C 根据文本“ Unique Online Offer: Buy 1 Get 1 Free (Must BOOK in advance online or
Large boat with covered shade area, air-conditioned enclosed deck,
船上还有两个卫生间);并且 Appropriate for All Ages(适合所有年龄段);Handicap Accessible(残
24.C 通过两位侍者的对话 "Last week he tried to commit suicide," one waiter said. "Why?"
"He was in despair." "What about?" "Nothing." "How do you know it was nothing?" "He has
plenty of money."可知答案为 C。
25.A 通过两位侍者的对话"He’ll stay all night," he said to his colleague. "I’m sleepy now. I
never get into bed before three o’clock. He should have killed himself last week." 可知,年轻侍者
对老人极不耐烦,抱怨自己很困,希望老人上周就自杀成功。所以答案为 A。
26.B 通过最后一段第一句“"You should have killed yourself last week," he said to the deaf man.”
He’ll stay all night," he said to his colleague. "I’m sleepy now. I never get into
bed before three o’clock. He should have killed himself last week."从两次说到老人应该自杀可
知,他对老人的态度是不耐烦的。A.
NEET=Not in education, Employment or Training,
4-5-year-olds in England are assessed by the Early Years Foundation Stage
Profile, and those who reach the boundary of a 'good level of development' are considered 'school
ready'.在英国,the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile估算那些 4-5岁达到“良好发展水平”
These findings tell us that there are clear, early indicators for children and young
people being at risk of disadvantage in late adolescence. As schools routinely collect this data, the
research could be used to kickstart early intervention in schools based on primary school
且从 the research could be used to kickstart early intervention in schools based on primary school
Data from the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is readily available for
millions of children and young people in England. This information could, and should, be used to
identify pupils at increased risk of becoming NEET."(“英国数百万儿童和青少年的 Early Years
Foundation Stage Profile
This information could, and should, be used to identify pupils at increased risk of becoming
NEET.
“Making a claim - Providing evidence - Drawing a conclusion”
中“Discussing different opinions - Reaching an agreement”在文中未体现。
的 the Antikythera mechanism。
Well over a century after its discovery, researchers at the
University of Glasgow say they've used statistical modeling techniques, originally designed to
analyze gravitational waves — ripples in spacetime caused by major events in the universe such
as two black holes combining — to suggest that the Antikythera mechanism was likely used to
track the Greek lunar year.(格拉斯哥大学的研究人员表示,他们已经使用了统计建模技术来表
The team used statistical models
and Bayesian analysis, to calculate the likely number of holes in the mechanism.
34.C根据第 4段“Bayesian analysis,a technique using probability to quantify uncertainty based on
incomplete data(贝叶斯分析,一种使用概率根据不完整数据来量化不确定性的技术)”,对
“Bayesian analysis”(贝叶斯分析)进行了解释说明,表明它是一种基于不完整数据来量化不
确定性的技术,所以选 C。 B选项 to measure ripples in spacetime(测量时空涟漪)”,测量时
D 选项 “to
calculatethe positions of the surviving holes(计算现存孔洞的位置)”,计算现存孔洞的位置不

During China's last imperial period, peasants in Guizhou province started using them
as a salt alternative.(中国的最后一个帝国时期,贵州的农民开始使用他们作为盐的替代品)

For a long time, la was used to describe
vicious-natured(性情恶毒的) people, and the few people who enjoyed chillies did not boost their
But the Communist revolution changed that. The chefs of nobles were out of favour,
and their traditions discontinued.(但是共产主义革命改变了那一点,贵族的厨师失宠了,他
From then on, chillies became a symbol of working class.(从那
Industrialisation after the revolution created the largest migration in human history.
Chillies are now
integrated into street food, fine dining and snacks in regions with little tradition of heat.(现在,辣
D. Millions of
migrants poured into big cities, bringing with them the spicy flavours of home.(数以万计的外来

58.being built Somxay Laolion
“see…being done”看到…
此处需要副词修饰 funded and built by Chinese companies

Dear Chris,
I hope this email finds you well. I had a remarkable experience with a self-driving taxi last
weekend and can’t wait to share it with you.
Stepping into the taxi was like entering a future world. It started smoothly and automatically
following the planned route, thus bringing me a sense of calmness. Along the way, it adjusted its
speed and direction effortlessly, which was truly astonishing.
This technology is incredibly advanced and shows great potential for making transportation
more efficient and convenient. However, I also can't help thinking about safety concerns and the
need for comprehensive safety measures.
Overall, my first ride in the self-driving taxi was impressive. I can’t wait to see how this
technology will shape our lives in the years to come.
Hope you‘re also having exciting adventures! Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Li Hua

That day’s biology class was the most interesting in a long time. The teacher was thoroughly
impressed by Poltu's presentation of the live butterfly. He used it as a starting point for a lively
discussion about the life of butterflies, their roles in nature and the importance of protecting such
creatures. The classmates crowded around and listened attentively, asking questions and sharing
their own thoughts as Pulte shared his experiences. The classroom buzzed with excitement and a
thirst for knowledge. Everyone was engaged and learning in a way that was fun and memorable.
Suddenly, the butterfly did not move. A hush fell over everyone as they held their breaths,
concern stamped on their faces. Was the butterfly unwell? Panic began to rise within Plotu. But
after a tense moment, the butterfly moved again, as if taking a moment of rest. A collective sigh of
relief filled the air. This brief scare made everyone realize the vulnerability and resilience of life.
In the end, Poltu, having learned and shared so much about the butterfly, made the decision to
send the butterfly to where it belonged - nature. With a gentle release, the butterfly fluttered away,
a symbol of freedom and the beauty.

(Text 1)
W: Sir, you parked your car in my parking space. You shouldn't have done so.
M: Don't get angry just yet. Take a closer look, please. I think you got it wrong.
W: Oh, I misunderstood you. My parking space is next to yours.
(Text 2)
M: The man is very famous in Europe, right?
W: Yes, but actually his songs and TV series are not so good.
M: That's true. I once watched one of his TV series; it's really boring.
(Text 3)
M: Do you have any hobbies?
W: Yes, but nothing special. I just like reading and going to the movies. How about you?
M: I have just one photography. It's good fun.
(Text 4)
M: Would you like to go to the grocery store for me?
W: I'm sorry but I'm too busy. I've got some work to do at the Internet cafe.
M: I'll go by myself then.
W: You can order your groceries through the Internet and save yourself a lot of time.
(Text 5)
W: I just got an email from Mr. Fredson. He confirmed that four clients from San Francisco will
be coming on Friday.
M: Great. Now, I can finalize Friday's meeting. I was waiting to hear how many people would be
attending before making a reservation.
(Text 6)
M: What are your after-college plans?
W: No clue, I just wanna get this degree. Why?
M: I'm starting a photography club for improving our skills while capturing and creating
memories.
W: How will it work?
M: We'll start with monthly sessions, practicing basic techniques and then gradually increase the
level of difficulty. We'll also go to different locations around the city and explore new landscapes.
Our college has approved the use of equipment and facilities, and there's a website to get the word
out through social media.
W: Amazing. When does it start?
M: The first weekend of next month. I've started reaching out to people. I'm getting a good
response!
W: Count me in!
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Maria. Are you ready for the race on Sunday?
W: Well, Bill, I have no previous experience, so I'm not sure how to prepare. I'm worried. A
classmate's going to run ten kilometers.
M: Yes. Some people like to practice on the track or in the gym the day before. I think that's
dangerous.
W: Well, I'm planning to stay in on Saturday, give my legs a break and prepare mentally.
M: Good idea. Staying off your feet and being energetic are what it should be all about.
(Text 8)
M: Is there anything else that concerns you, Mrs. Ozawa?
W: Yes, there is one other thing. My company employs 357 people. Many of them have worked
for Ozawa all their working lives. I want your personal guarantee that they will keep their jobs for
at least ten years.
M: Come on, Mrs. Ozawa, you cannot be serious. I need your technical service guys, and some of
the sales force. I'm talking 50 people tops. I'll give them an annual renewable contract. The rest
will have to go.
W:Where will you build the printers?
M: Well, we'll just add another line to our factory in Shanghai. Employees are no big deal.
Employees here in Australia are too particular about work. Mrs. Ozawa... ten years? That's totally
unrealistic. I can't agree with that request.
(Text 9)
W: Look at the note on the fridge. It must be from Mom.
M: Let me see. Mom said she got a call from our grandpa this morning, because something had
come up at his house. She didn't have time to cook breakfast. Besides, she wanted us to do
housework.
W: No problem. The summer vacation started yesterday, so you don't have to deal with school
work. As for me, I don't need to go to my flower shop, because it is being decorated and won't
reopen until next week. Therefore, we're both free today.
M: OK. Let's share the housework now. I'll mop the floor and take out the garbage. I leave the
laundry and window cleaning to you.
W. OK. You've been having back pain lately, so I'll also take care of mopping the floor. What
about grocery shopping?
M: We can walk to the nearby grocery store when we're done.
W: It is closed these days, so Mom has to drive to the far market. But she drove the car to our
grandpa's house today.
M: It's simple. Let's take the bus.
W: Good idea.
(Text 10)
W:Handing power tools over to young students could result in some disastrous situations. But if
those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable
new skills and might even find a new career path. One such program, in Washington, D.C., aims to
teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a
woodshop, completely housed inside a truck, that acts as a kind of "classroom on wheels”. The
Mobile Woodshop program was started by the nonprofit Zenith Community Arts Foundation.
Margery Goldberg, Zenith's director, said the goal of the woodshop is "to get people jobs". Joe
Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centers on teaching students "soft
skills”. These are skills that are desirable in all jobs, such as teamwork, having a strong work ethic,
being able to follow instructions and arriving to work on time. Ryan is a student at the mobile
woodshop. Before entering the class, he had some experience working with wood and tools. "I
wanted to give myself a chance to get better at it. That's why I started the class,” Ryan said. He
added that he saw another benefit to learning woodworking: "You can sell some of this stuff and
make money from it.”
