I’m Katy. I have many good friends, and Jenny is one of them. I’m in
Class Six, and Jenny is in Class Eight. We first met in the Tennis Club in
our school. Both of us like playing tennis, and we often practise together.
I often visit Jenny at the weekend. Sometimes we swim in the pool or go
shopping with our friend Sarah. She is in the Dance Club and dances
beautifully. I went to Jenny’s house today. It was raining, so we couldn’t go
out.

dance any more. Luckily, she gets a new pair of dancing shoes. Albert
surprises Susan by bringing her the new shoes with his mouth. It is a
wonderful happy ending.
I told Jenny that I loved the movie. She laughed and said she found it
quite boring. She only kept watching it because I was enjoying it so much. I
felt a little bad about it, but it’s nice to have a good friend like Jenny.

Sometimes we make friends with unexpected(出乎意料的) people.
For example, who would have thought that a spider would make friends
with a pig? But in E. B. White’s classic book Charlotte’s Web, this is
exactly what happens.
In the story, Wilbur is an unlucky pig. When he was born, he was so
small that the farmer decided to end the pig’s life. Luckily, the farmer’s
daughter stops him from killing Wilbur and decides to raise the pig in a
barnyard(仓院).

danger. By making words in her web, she makes the farmer believe that
Wilbur is some kind of amazing animal, too important to kill. After Wilbur
is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies.

The hobby started in 1942. Nona, then 12, was reading a magazine.
Some people were asking for penfriends in the magazine. One of them caught
Nona’s eye. It was from Alice Powers. She lived in America and was also 12.
“I was very excited,” Nona said. “I sat down immediately, wrote a
letter, put it in an envelope(信封)—together with a picture of myself—
and posted it.”

Nona spent every day waiting for the postman. Two weeks later—which

overjoyed,” Nona said. “There was a letter and a picture of my new
friend. She was all the way on the other side of the world!”
Nona and Alice wanted to learn more about each other. They kept
writing. The two found that they had a lot in common. They liked the same
books and the same films.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give
friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. 41.
You must learn to treat your friend in the way you want your friend to treat
you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest;
be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust
one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend
finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You
don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead,
you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests.
Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. 43. They tell

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem.
Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it
easier to solve it. 44. So to be a friend you must listen and understand.
You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the
problem better.
