Deanna Stellato-Dudek retired in 2001 because of injuries. But this week, she achieved the unthinkable. With her partner Maxime Deschamps, the 40-year-old former retiree defeated athletes less than half her age and became the oldest woman to win a World Figure Skating Championship. Even more remarkable, she did it in the pairs event, in which the top women are thrown across the ice, lifted over their partners’ heads with one arm, and tossed (抛) more than 10 feet in the air.
Stellato-Dudek had an impressive junior career as a singles skater, winning the 1999-2000 International Junior Grand Prix Final and receiving the silver medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships.
However, by 2001, a few significant injuries led to her decision to retire at age 17. For the next 16 years, Stellato-Dudek lived a relatively normal adulthood. She became a successful aesthetician (美学家) and got married. She was no longer attempting risky triple (转体三周的) jumps on international ice.
But the feelings of unfinished business kept disturbing her — whether she had quit the sport too early and whether she had more to achieve in skating. So she tried on her old skates and attempted the impossible — learning how to become a pairs skater in her 30s and returning to competitive ice.
Her efforts paid off, and now Stellato-Dudek and her partner are unlikely world champions at ages 40 and 32. Stellato-Dudek said she hoped the historic victory inspired everyone, even non-skaters, who might think it was too late to pursue and achieve their goals. “I hope it encourages people not to stop before they reach their potential,” she told reporters after winning the title Thursday night.
Stellato-Dudek is not done. Her next major goal is to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics at age 42. “She is a fighter,” her partner said. “For her, it’s the Olympics every day. ”
24.What do we know about Stellato-Dudek from paragraph 1?
A.She entered the competition alone.
B.She was younger than her competitors.
C.She returned to skating because she lost her job.
D.She won the championship in pairs skating.
25.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Stellato-Dudek?
A.Her past achievements. B.Her career plans.
C.The challenges she met. D.The training she went through.
26.What did Stellato-Dudek do after her retirement?
A.She worked as a coach. B.She got married.
C.She threw away her old skates. D.She kept trying risky triple jumps.
27.Which word can best describe Stellato-Dudek?
A.Wise and sympathetic. B.Ambitious and determined.
C.Creative and generous. D.Considerate and cautious.

Competitive eating has become big business. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most popular contests (竞赛) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占据优势) by Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row.
The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who take part in competitive eating.
Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed.
The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating. Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at present.

A.How to win an eating contest.
B.The history of competitive eating.
C.Safety guidelines from the IFOCE.
D.The disadvantages of eating too much.
31.What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To report. B.To advertise. C.To introduce. D.To warn.

Going to the bathroom while floating in space can be tricky. Gravity is very weak in space, meaning toilets cannot flush (冲刷) the same way that they do on Earth. In a new contest, NASA is asking inventors from around the world to develop a new space toilet. The space agency is looking for a design that would work both aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as well as on the moon. NASA plans to use this toilet aboard a future lunar lander as part of the Artemis program, which will send humans to the moon by 2024.
Anyone can apply to this challenge, and the winning design will receive a $20,000 prize. The second-place design will win $10,000, and the third-place winner will win $5,000. The contest includes a “junior” category in which anyone under the age of 18 can apply with their creative space toilet idea. Winners in the junior category will receive public recognition and NASA souvenirs.
Designs should also take up no more than 4.2 cubic feet of space. The toilet itself shouldn’t be louder than 60 decibels, which is about the same volume as a bathroom fan. The space toilet will have to be able to collect both urine (尿液) and fecest (粪便) at the same time. It should be able to hold at least a quarter gallon (1 liter) of liquid waste. It should also be able to hold 17.6 ounces (500 grams) of solid waste. The final requirements are that the system must be able to store or get rid of waste, and it should also be able to be cleaned and maintained in five minutes or less.
Hopefully, this toilet will be an improvement on previous systems for waste removal. A waste removal system is a method of disposing of urine and feces. If you are a creative inventor, come and join us!
32.Which aspect of the design is not required in the contest?
A.Its covering space. B.Its volume. C.Its time of cleaning. D.Its weight.
33.What can you know about this contest?
A.It’s a toilet design contest held by ISS for the American inventors.
B.It has a total prize pool of 45,000 to be shared by winning teams.
C.For the contestants, there are no limits to your age and nationalities.
D.If you are the winner under the age of 18, you will win 5,000.
34.What does the underlined word “disposing” mean?
A.Giving away. B.Putting off. C.Getting rid of. D.Picking out.
35.What is the purpose of writing this text?
A.To introduce a toilet design contest. B.To attract inventors to take part in the contest.
C.To explain the necessity of a toilet in space. D.To show the difficulty of living in space.

Why do we say “it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts”? The founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, once said “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part.”
Most people seem to agree that trying and failing is more admirable than not trying at all. 36
In young children’s sporting events, the last place is often rewarded with a “wooden spoon”. 37 Perhaps “taking part” is just a myth (不真实的事) designed to cheer up the slowest children: to take the edge off failure. 38 They say that effort and trying hard to reach a goal are commendable (值得赞扬的) in themselves.
Winning athletes are those who combine this good behaviour with natural talent.
39 De Coubertin himself coined the motto (格言) “Citius, Altius, Fortius” — “faster, higher, stronger” — for his Games. It is an ambiguous (模棱两可的) motto and one that could be taken to include trying hard to beat one’s personal best as well as going for gold.
Competition is not unacceptable. It is reasonable that winners be rewarded, even if their victories sometimes are a matter of chance. 40 And games are important to humanity. Celebrating achievement is also not in itself unacceptable but it can drive some competitors to unacceptable behaviour.
A.Many people would say otherwise.
B.Competition is the essence of a game.
C.There are other goals to work for apart from a medal.
D.Grown-up athletes don’t even have this to look forward to.
E.It is commonly accepted that through sport one learns to persevere.
F.In practice, though, most people seem only to be interested in the medal lists.
G.The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world.

It was a really hot afternoon in September. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer(蒸笼). Every player was wet with sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough test of the mind and body for the teams from Charles City High School and New Hampton High School.
Soon the game began and for the first thirty minutes, each team seemed to have a chance to win and they took the lead by turns. So tired was Mario Hoefer, the captain of the Charles City High School football team, that he had to stop to catch his breath occasionally during the race. Each time he stopped, his teammates came over to his assistance. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario Hoefer pushed on as his team had to fight very hard to protect a slim lead while the New Hampton High School football team attempted a late comeback.
About forty minutes later, Mario Hoefer saw his teammates stopping the ball intended for Carter Steinlage, a member of the New Hampton High School football team. Mario Hoefer was about to help his teammates when he noticed that Carter Steinlage went down to the ground, screaming in pain. His eyes were wide open and a look of panic appeared on his face. Judging from Carter Steinlage’s facial expression, Mario Hoefer realized that Carter Steinlage was in a serious condition.
American football can be pretty competitive. From tricking opposing teams to fan drama, they are just another part of the game. There have even been violent fights in the name of defending their own team. However, Mario Hoefer decided to show that his love for the sport would not stop him from helping a competitor in need.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

A man was driving his car when he saw an old lady in trouble on the side of the road. So he stopped his Ford near her BMW to help her. While he was approaching her, she looked worried and frightened because his appearance was so poor and shabby. So he tried to calm her, “I’m here to help you. Don't worry. My name is Bryan Anderson.” The tire of the old lady’s car was flat. While changing the tire under the car, he got dirty and his hands were hurt. When the job was done, she asked how much she owed him for his help. Bryan smiled and said, “If you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, give that person the assistance needed.” In the same evening, the lady stopped by a small cafe. She saw a pregnant waitress. The lady finished her meal and paid with a 100-dollar bill. When the waitress came back with the change, the lady was gone. She left a note saying, “Somebody once helped me. If you really want to pay me back, do not let this chain of love end with you.” The waitress found four more 100 bills under a piece of paper. That night the waitress came home earlier. She was wondering how the lady could know she and her husband needed the money, especially now, when the baby would soon arrive. So she was glad to tell her husband the good news. “Now everything will be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”

【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.B
根据第一段“Deanna Stellato-Dudek retired in 2001 because of injuries. But this week, she achieved the unthinkable. With her partner Maxime Deschamps, the 40-year-old former retiree defeated athletes less than half her age and became the oldest woman to win a World Figure Skating Championship.( 迪安娜·斯特拉托-杜德克于2001年因伤退役。但本周,她实现了一件不可思议的事。与搭档马克西姆·德尚(Maxime Deschamps)一起,这位40岁的前退役运动员击败了年龄不到她一半的运动员,成为赢得世界花样滑冰冠军的年龄最大的女性)”可知,Stellato-Dudek 赢得了双人滑冰的冠军。故选D。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段内容“Stellato-Dudek had an impressive junior career as a singles skater, winning the 1999 — 2000 International Junior Grand Prix Final and receiving the silver me dal at the 2000 World Junior Championships.(斯特拉托-杜德克的青少年单人滑生涯令人印象深刻,他赢得了1999-2000年国际青少年大奖赛决赛,并在2000年世界青少年锦标赛上获得银牌)”可知,本段主要介绍了Stellato-Dudek过去的成就。故选A。
根据第三段“However, by 2001, a few significant injuries led to her decision to retire at age 17. For the next 16 years, Stellato-Dudek lived a relatively normal adulthood. She became a successful aesthetician(美学家)and got married.(然而,到了2001年,几次严重的伤病导致她决定在17岁时退役。在接下来的16年里,斯特拉托-杜德克过着相对正常的成年生活。她成为了一名成功的美学家并结婚了)”可知,Stellato-Dudek退役后结婚了。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据第四段的“So she tried on her old skates and attempted the impossible — learning how to become a pairs skater in her 30s and returning to competitive ice.(于是,她穿上旧冰鞋,尝试着完成不可能完成的任务——学习如何在30多岁时成为一名双人滑运动员,并重返赛场)”,和最后一段“Stellato-Dudek is not done.
28.Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest _____.
A.has a history of over 200 years
B.takes place once a year in Japan
C.is becoming less popular than before
D.has made Takeru Kobayashi famous
29.What do we know about eating contests?
A.Fast food is the only type of food.
B.They usually last ten minutes or so.
C.Only men are allowed to enter a contest.
D.They are open to competitors of all ages.
30.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.How to win an eating contest.
B.The history of competitive eating.
C.Safety guidelines from the IFOCE.
D.The disadvantages of eating too much.
31.What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To report. B.To advertise. C.To introduce. D.To warn.
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
由第一段中的“The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001 ... has won the contest six years in a row”可知,Takeru Kobayashi在美国纽约的内森国际吃热狗大赛上连夺六届冠军,这使得他名声远扬。
由第二段中的“The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes”可知,竞吃比赛通常持续十分钟左右。
由第三段“The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed.”

根据倒数第二段“Designs should also take up no more than 4.2 cubic feet of space. The toilet itself shouldn’t be louder than 60 decibels, which is about the same volume as a bathroom fan. The space toilet will have to be able to collect both urine (尿液) and fecest (粪便) at the same time. It should be able to hold at least a quarter gallon (1 liter)of liquid waste. It should also be able to hold 17.6 ounces (500 grams)of solid waste. The final requirements are that the system must be able to store or get rid of waste, and it should also be able to be cleaned and maintained in five minutes or less.(设计还应占用不超过4.2立方英尺的空间。马桶本身的声音不应该超过60分贝,这和浴室风扇的音量差不多。太空厕所必须能够同时收集尿液和粪便。它应该能够容纳至少四分之一加仑(1升)的液体废物。它还应该能够容纳17.6盎司(500克)的固体废物。最后的要求是,该系统必须能够存储或清除废物,并且还应该能够在五分钟或更短的时间内进行清洁和维护)”可知,对马桶本身的重量没有要求,故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段“Anyone can apply to this challenge, and the winning design will receive a $20,000 prize.(任何人都可以申请这个挑战,获胜的设计将获得2万美元的奖金)”可知,对于参赛者来说,没有年龄和国籍限制。故选C。
根据第三段“The final requirements are that the system must be able to store or get rid of waste, and it should also be able to be cleaned and maintained in five minutes or less.(最后的要求是,该系统必须能够存储或清除废物,并且还应该能够在五分钟或更短的时间内进行清洁和维护)”可知,NASA希望这次比赛的设计能够清理掉人们在太空中的排泄物,即这个“废物清理系统”就是一种能够妥善处理人类排泄物的方法,故划线词意思是“清理掉”。故选C。
根据第一段“In a new contest, NASA is asking inventors from around the world to develop a new space toilet. The space agency is looking for a design that would work both aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as well as on the moon. NASA plans to use this toilet aboard a future lunar lander as part of the Artemis program, which will send humans to the moon by 2024.(在一项新的竞赛中,美国宇航局要求来自世界各地的发明家开发一种新的太空厕所。
【答案】36.F 37.D 38.A 39.C 40.B
36.根据上文“Most people seem to agree that trying and failing is more admirable than not trying at all. (大多数人似乎都同意,尝试和失败比根本不尝试更令人钦佩。)”可知,作者在此处主要讨论人们关于比赛中最重要的事情的看法,F项通过though与上文内容形成转折,only to be interested in the medal lists也与上文中的agree that trying and failing is more admirable than not trying at all构成了对比关系。
37.根据上文“In young children’s sporting events, the last place is often rewarded with a “wooden spoon”. (在儿童体育比赛中,最后一名通常会被奖励“末名奖。”)”可知,本句承接上文,继续介绍成人比赛的情况,D项中的Grown-up athletes与上文中的young children构成了对比关系,同时this指代上文中的wooden spoon。D选项“成年运动员甚至没有这样的期待”符合语境。故选D。
38.根据上文“Perhaps “taking part” is just a myth (不真实的事) designed to cheer up the slowest children: to take the edge off failure. (也许“参与”只是一个神话,旨在让最慢的孩子们振作起来:消除失败的痛苦。)”和下文“They say that effort and trying hard to reach a goal are commendable (值得赞扬的) in themselves. (他们说,尝试和努力达到一个目标本身是值得称赞的。)”可知,此处需要填入一个起转折作用的句子。A项中的otherwise与上文内容形成转折,下文中的They say that effort and trying hard to reach a goal are commendable in themselves是对A项内容的具体解释,同时下文中的They指代A项中的Many people。 故选A。
39.根据后文“De Coubertin himself coined the motto (格言) “Citius, Altius, Fortius” — “faster, higher, stronger” — for his Games. It is an ambiguous (模棱两可的) motto and one that could be taken to include trying hard to beat one’s personal best as well as going for gold. (顾拜旦自己为他的奥运会创造了“Citius, Altius, Fortius”——“更快,更高,更强”。这是一个模棱两可的座右铭,它可以被理解为包括努力打破个人最好成绩和夺取金牌。)”可知,本空为该段的主旨句。根据下文中的include trying hard to beat one’s personal best as well as going for gold可知,作者认为运动员参加比赛除了夺取奖牌还可以有其他的奋斗目标,例如刷新自己的最好成绩,因此C项“除了奖牌,还有其他的目标。”
和“It is reasonable that winners be rewarded, even if their victories sometimes are a matter of chance. (胜利者得到奖励是合理的,即使他们的胜利有时是偶然的。)”可知,作者在本段主要论述竞争在比赛中不是不可接受的,相反,竞争在比赛中很重要,因此B项“竞争是比赛的本质。”符合此处内容。B项中的Competition与主旨句中的Competition构成原词复现的关系,同时B项也与下文中的And games are important to humanity在内容上构成顺承关系。

Mario Hoefer immediately knew what to do. Having made sure Carter was in fact merely experiencing a cramp, he knelt down on the ground and held his left foot, pulling it towards himself to relieve Carter’s pain. Meanwhile, he comforted Carter, “Take it easy. You’ll be all right soon.” Gradually, Carter’s panicked and painful expression began to soften. When his teammates and trainer made it to him, he had recovered. Carter rose to his feet, giving Mario a big hug to express his heartfelt gratitude. The game continued, no body realizing the moment had been captured by a viewer in the stands.
The moment had been recorded by a viewer and posted on social media. Surprisingly, it received a flood of supportive responses. Thousands of netizens sang high praise for Mario’s act of kindness. Many thought what he did showed the true sportsmanship on the field and that the world needed to see more of such touching pictures. Mario didn’t expect his instinctive action would arouse such a big reaction, saying modestly, “It was no big deal to step in to stretch Carter’s leg out. It was more like a brotherly thing to help him out.” Mario and Carter, the two former opponents, have since become sincere friends, whose story convinces people of the true spirit of sports.
