I've lived in a tiny town all my life,rarely leaving it.Being a"small town girl",I admit I'm fairly

Thanks to his 13 I was able to make my way back to my friend's house.I don't know

Pasta and pizza were on everyone's lunch menu in my native land of Italy.Everyone who had
such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian.A few years later,as I stood in the lunch line with
my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn,I realized things were no longer that simple. My
ciassmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin
and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse as the students. In front of me was an array
of foods I couldn't even name in my native language.Fearing that I would pick out something awful,
I desperately tried to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation.Unfortunately, between us
stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago,the lessons I learned will stick
in my mind forever. For the past three summers,I have worked in a government agency in New
York.New immigrants much like the tittle girl in the lunch line tlooded our office seeking help.I
often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones.As I served the role of vital
communication link,I was reminded of my desperate struggle to converse before I learned English.
I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people
who did not speak the language. It suddenly became very clear to me how luckv I was to be fiuent
in two languages.
In New York,a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a
diverse population. In my English to Italian translations,I've learned about social programs that I

means some food poisoning organisms
may survive.
Bacteria are the one of the main food poisoners. So,to get food on the table sately, you need
to know and foliow the ruies for food care.
KEEP FOOD HOT
High food temperatures(165F to 212F)reached in boiling, baking, frying, and roasting kill
most food poisoning bacteria. If you want to delay serving cooked food, though, you have to keep
it at a holding temperature-roughly 140F to 165F.Steam tables and chafing dishes are designed
to maintain holding temperatures. But they don't always keep tood hot enough. So it's not wise to
leave hot food out more than 2 hours.
When cooked food is left out unheated, the possibility of bacterial growth ks greater, since the
food quickly drops te room temperature where food poisoners multiply.
To serve hot foods safely-particularly meat and poultry, which are highly affected by food
poisoning-follow these rules:
Cook thoroughly-Cook meat and poultry to the "doneness"temperatures given in the
above chart. To make sure that meat and poultry are cooked all the way througn, use a meat
thermometer ()Insert the tip into the thickest part of the meat.avoiding fat or bone.
2025届高二英语10月阶段测试
5
Don't interrupt cooking-Cook meat and poultry completely at one time.Partial cooking
may encourage bacterial growth before cooking is complete.
Cooking frozen food-Allow frozen food more time to cook-generally 1.5 times the period
required for food that has been thawed(解冻).
19.At what temperature do bacteria grow the fastest?
A.402C60C.B.60F125F.
C.40C1409C.
D.1259F~1409F
20.To keep food safe,it is suggested that
A.hot food should not be left out over two hours
B.frozen food should be thawed with a microwave oven
C.raw ham should be cooked to the "doneness"temperature at 719F
D.steam tables and chafing dishes should be used to keep food hot enough
21.What can be learned according to the guideline?
A,The only way to ensure food safety is to keep it hot enough
B.High food temperatures above 74C destroy most poisoning bacteria.
C.Compared with goose, ground beef should be cooked to higher temperatures.
D.Insert the tip of a thermometer into the thickest part of the fat to control the temperature.
Scientists have known for decades that having measles (suppresses kids immune
systems for several weeks or months, leaving them ill-equipped to fight off pneumonia, bronchitis
and other infections.
Now a team of researchers has suggested that the measles virus may also leave a longer-lasting
sort of "immune-amnesia"that makes it harder for people to stave off otner illnesses for two years or
more.
That re-emphasizes the importance of vaecination()said biologist Michael Mina lead
author of a paper that was published in the journal Science
"There may be a long-lasting impaet that you can't undo it your child gets measles,"he said.
"I hope this study can impress upon people the danger measles poses."
The researchers used what Mina called "an unconventional approach"to searchtor the long-
lasting immune system effects.Previous work in monkeys suggested that monkeys with the disease
lost white blood cells their bedies had trained to fight off other illnesses, leaving them more likely
to be infected.
fo test if a similar thing may occur in humans, the group mined historical data to find out the
relationship between measles incidence (and deaths from other inrectious diseases.
They turned to data from England and Wales--developed nations where disease levels are
generally low, allowing a less-confused view of measles'effects.Studying measles incidence and
deaths from infectilous disease both before and after the intreduction of the measles vaccine in the
U.K.in the 1960s,Mina and the team saw a sort of shadow effect, where deaths from a variety of
2025届高二英语10月阶段测试
6
non-measles infectious diseases closely tracked measles incidence. The more measles in a
population, the more deaths frem other illnesses in the 28 month perioa that followed.
"Really it didn't matter what age group, what decade or what country,"said Mina."They all
showed consistent resalts...what we're suggesting happens over the long term is that your immune
system works fine.but it has forgotten what it previously learned.
Some researchers who were not involved in the work questioned whether the reductions in
deaths as measles cases declined may have had more to do with improving nutrition and smaller
family size than with prolonged immune suppression.
Others thought the paper's opinion of years-long suppression was seemingly reasonable but
said they could not comment on the mathematical models the group used.
To know for certain what was behind the effect the group saw,Mina agreed, scientists would
need to look at immune cells and observe their behavior. He said he would like to push the work
in a more traditional direction:back into the laboratorv.
22.Why did Mina call their research method "an unconventional approach"?
A.Their research was based on the historical data.
B.Their research compared monkeys with humans.
C.They only paid attention to developed nations.
D.They discovered a sort of shadow effect.
23.According to Mina, what is the significance of their research?
A.They warned people that measles can result in other infectious diseases.
B.They carried out the research on measles in an unconventional approach.
C.They showed how dangerous measles is and the importance of vaccination.
D.They found out the disease levels are generally low in developed nations.
24.The underlined phrase "stave off"in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to
A.keep away B.survive from
C.search for
D.turn down
25.Which of the following may be the best title of the passage?
A.Measles has been the origin of other diseases and deaths
B.New research conducted into measles has been widely questioned
C.Study points to years-long immune system misfortunes from measles
D.Damage caused by measles to the immune system could last several weeks

Alone in the wilderness.Nothing but lungle.A world of shadow with the rays of light falling
like blonde hair from the crewns of the giant trees.dungle in the midday sun.Everything motionless.
Not a sound from sky or earth.Complete silence.Only some coconuts falling,at long intervals, very
far away. The world redueedto the soft touen of cool grass along my naked back, and a sweet smell
of rich soil and vegetation.Stretched out with closed eyes beside my heavy burden ot fruit and
firewood,I enjoyed the feeling of fresh blood streaming through every part of my body and fresh
jungle air filling every corner of my lungs.

Resting motionless,I could see the sun through my closea eyelids, alone in the sky,as lonely
as I,and as motionless and silent as everything else. The earth had surely stopped turning and
somewhere on this planet there was supposed to be roaring traffic in busy streets. What a crazy,
unbelievable thought!
Another coeonut fell,to make the world come to a complete standstiil.I had to roll over onto
my stomach to feel that at least I could move and make noises. Then I found company.A little
brown ant was struggling to find its way with a bit of dry straw through the jungle of leaves and
grass below my nose.I wondered if I could give the little fellow a lift with its burden, but it showed
not the slightest sign of tiredness and struggled on with all six legs, head first or head last, waving
its feelers energetically as it the trip had just started.Who ever saw a tired ant?Tiredness,
disagreeable tiredness.is restricted to hunted animals, slaves and modern man.It is as great an
effort for an office clerk to walk five blocks with a loaded brief-case as it is for a jungle-dweller to
cross a valley with a goat on his back.It is as hara to get up and climb or run when you have been
seated for years as it is to get up and walk when you have been in bed tor months. The bedy is
strange.Spare it,and you get really tired for almost nothing;use it,and almost nothing makes you
really tired.
I rose te my feet.I had heard a horse neighing down in the valley.Above me,on the open
highland plains, there were wild horses. But down in the valley there was never a horse unless
there was a man on it.Somebody was making his way up the valley and my wife was alone.
26.The author mentions coconuts'falling to
A.show his loneliness
B.add beauty to the jungle
C.express his love of nature
D.stress the absolute silence
27.How does the author feel about the ant?
A.He admired its attitude toward work.
B.He was amazed at its tireless efforts.
C.He showed sympathy for the little ant.
D.He was content to have it as a companion.
28.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author would probably
A.work harder than before
B.talk to the man on the horse
C.make his way home
D.stay in the valley
29.We can learn from the passage that the author
A.enjoyed being alone
B.had an unforgettable adventure
C.missed his busy life in the city
D.experienced a world of quietness

In all our lives we must make choices. You make choices from the time you get out of bed in
the morning until you go to sleep at night. What time to get up?What to wear? What to eat?You
also make more significant choices when you graduate from high school.30 College?
Technical training?
No matter the size of the decision, the common thread in all et them is that they involve an
opportunity cost.Opportunity cost is your next best alternative-your second choice. For example,
it's a Saturday night, and you are trying to decide between going to the movies, hanging out at a
friend's house or going to the football game.31 What was your second choice? If it was
the football game, then that is your opportunity cost.
Opportunity cost is important. When you make a certain choice,it forces you to think more
critically about all of the abandoned choices.By recognizing opportunity cost, you can decide
whether your decision is worth it.
32 As a high school senior, you face several eptions including going to college,
going to technical school,or going to the work farce. If you choose college, the opportunity cost is
losing what could have been purchased or saved with the money spent on tuition ()housing,
books, etc.for four years.33You would also lose four years'worth of income and
experience that you could have earnen you had gone straight to work.
However,it is still the case that college graduates earn more than high school graduates do
And the unemployment rate among college graduates is less than that of high school graduates.
34 But,like all decisions,it is one that should be arrived at only after looking at the
costs-including the opportunity cost-and considering the follow-up question:is it worth it?
A.Will you go straight to work?
B.What causes opportumty cost?
C.But that's not the end of the costs
D.Suppose you decide to go te the movies.
E.If you give up college, what do you lose?
F.A perfect example is the decision to ge to college.
For many students, going on to college is a wise decision.
