Then the sun came out, and by the time I had sat down to breakfast it was shining bravely and flushing the snow with delicate pinks. The dining-room window had been transformed into a lovely Japanese print. The little plum tree outside, with the faintly flushed snow lining its branches and artfully disposed along its trunk, stood in full sunlight.
The glare has gone and no touch of the disturbing remains. But the snow is falling heavily, in great soft flakes, so that you can hardly see across the shallow valley, and the roofs are thick and the trees all bending, and the weathercock of the village church, still to be seen through the grey loaded air, has become some creature out of Hans Andersen.
通过描写周围的环境间接地描写了雪景,使用hardly see across the shallow valley, the grey loaded air描写大雪的场景;使用the roofs are thick描写周围房屋的屋顶上积了厚厚的雪;使用 the trees all bending描写树木被积雪压得弯下腰来;用Hans Andersen笔下的生物借代描写教堂上风信鸡的美丽与奇特,描绘出一个雪后的童话世界。

When she approached him and said hello, he did not react. Taking a deep breath, Bales got closer, checked his pulse and suddenly realized that the man must have passed out. She knew she had to wake him up immediately or the dreadful weather could put him in greater danger. Out of her bag, Bales took a carpet to wrap the man, gave some hot water to him, called out repeatedly and shook him hard. Fortunately, it didn't take long before the man came to himself.
After waking the man up, Bales recognized that they had to get out of there soon. The wind kept howling with the heavy sleet driving fiercely, and even worse, darkness began to fall. Anxious, Bales struggled to help the man up, supporting his weight and inching along the trail, following the tracks left by her hiking boots. After what seemed like ages, they finally made it to the foot of the mountain. The man was rushed to hospital immediately. Exhausted as she was, Bales felt a wave of happiness welled up inside.

Jackson, a 6th grader, was heartbroken about his grandpa's diagnosis. He and his grandpa spent a lot of time together.Grandpa taught him things like how to play golf and how to drive a boat. When Jackson found out his grandpa had been diagnosed with cancer, his world collapsed.
Grandpa Rick loved styling his hair but with the chemotherapy (化疗) treatments, his hair started getting really thin.Jackson knew his grandpa felt pretty disheartened about losing his hair. So, he decided to do something to cheer him up and make him feel less alone. He couldn't make cancer go away, but he could support his grandpa during his treatments. He decided to shave his own head and told his grandpa he wouldn't be alone, and that he wouldn't be the only one losing his hair.
However, at school the next day, Jackson's friends had a different attitude to his hairstyle. Some of his classmates teased and bullied him about his shaved head. One student called him “baldy” and another said “you look like having a cancer”.At first, Jackson felt enraged at the comments, but his anger turned to sadness later on.
When Jackson got home from school, without saying anything, he locked himself in his room. His mother Sue knocked at the door, asking what had happened. The door finally opened.Out he came. With disappointment on his face, he murmured, “My classmates made fun of my haircut.Nobody in this world could know my sorrow.” After saying these, he buried his face in his mother's chest and burst out crying. The mother, too, felt angry and disappointed with the kids at school.
She decided to reach out to Principal (校长) Tom Hadley and tell him about her son being bullied. When he returned her call, Hadley asked if she still had the clippers (理发剪) that Jackson cut his hair with.Sue said “yes”, unsure of what he was going to do with this.Hadley then asked if Jackson could bring the clippers to school the next day.

The following day, the principal organised a gathering with all students at the school. He said, “Jackson shaved his head to back his grandpa who has been diagnosed with cancer. But someone laughed at him.” He then asked the students to raise their hands if they'd ever known someone with cancer.Almost everyone in the room raised their hands.Hadley continued, “It is wrong for us to judge somebody else's reaction to that, and we can do better. In standing up for Jackson and showing my support for his grandpa, I've offered to let Jackson shave my head today.”
Hadley then sat in a chair in front of all the students while Jackson shaved his head. The students seemed moved. The principal ended his speech by saying: “Support each other, and love each other. We're a family — that's why we're here. We're family — that's what we do: we support each other, in good times and bad.I want to see more good times than bad, but I'm here either way.” It was these touching words that all the students in the room would never forget.
