英文读与练16 Ten years of travel 环球旅行十年 1 Torbjorn Pedersen is a Danish traveler who recently finished a trip around the world. But this wasn't just any trip. Mr. Pedersen spent nearly 10 years visiting very country in the world without flying. 2 Mr. Pedersen had already traveled and worked in many different countries. But in2013, he read an article about someone who had visited all the countries of the world. Mr. Pedersen realized he could set a record by doing the same thing, but without flying. 3 As he began to plan his trip, he made a few rules: no flying, no visiting home, and spend at least 24 hours in every country. He hoped that he could live on about $20 a day,and finish his trip in about four years. 4 It took him far longer. The first part of his trip was pretty easy. He traveled across Europe and North America, where his biggest challenge was not spending too much money. But as he moved on to other parts of the world, things began to get much harder. To cross large bodies of water, Mr. Pedersen took boats. Sometimes it was hard to find a boat. At other times, Mr. Pedersen was on a boat for days, being tossed by strong waves during a storm. He traveled by taxi, bus, train, and even walking. Sometimes he paid for a place to stay; sometimes people invited him into their homes. At other times, he had to sleep outside. He says that one reason he didn't give up was the help he got from people all over the world.“ You might have to try 1000 closed doors, but there is always an open door some -where. Never, ever give up,” he says. 5 On July 26, Mr. Pedersen arrived back in Denmark after a 33?day boat ride. He was met by about 150 people, including friends and family members. In the last 10 years, he covered around 260,000 miles. He says he's looking forward to some quiet time to think about his trip. The sail is expected to save fuel and cut pollution. If it works well, similar sails could become common on cargo ships over the next few years. 2 The new sail is called Wind Wing. When the ship is at sea, the Wind Wing can be raised and turned to catch the wind, helping the ship move forward. When the ship is in port, or when the weather is rough, the Wind Wing can be folded down flat on the ship's deck. 3 Cargill, a huge American food company, had the idea of creating the sail. Because it depends on ships to transport its food, Cargill was interested in finding ways to reduce pollution from its shipping operations. Shipping produces a huge amount of pollution. About 2.1% of the world's CO2 pollution comes from shipping. In recent years, that number has been increasing. So Cargill decided to try looking at how ships used to move, long before fossil fuels became common—wind power. 4 Cargill asked the British company BAR Technologies to design a sail for cargo ships. And a company called Yara Marine built the Wind Wings, which were then put on the Pyxis Ocean—a cargo ship owned by Mitsubishi. In tests, the Pyxis Ocean was able to reach speeds of up to 10 kph using just the Wind Wings, and no fuel at all. 5 Normally, the Pyxis Ocean will use fuel, but it aims to use far less by letting the wind help out. Cargill says computer studies show that each Wind Wing can save 1.65 tons of fuel every day. The Pyxis Ocean has two Wind Wings. Cargill says these should cut the ship's pollution by about 30%. 6 The Pyxis Ocean will take six weeks to reach Brazil. Cargill plans to carefully study the results to learn how well the Wind Wing worked, and whether it can be improved. The exciting thing about Wind Wings is that, if they work well, they can be made to fit many cargo ships that are currently running on fossil fuels. Reading Check 1. Why was the Wind Wing created? A. To provide a cheaper power source for cargo ships. B. To increase the speed of cargo ships. C. To reduce fuel consumption of cargo ships. D. To improve the stability of cargo ships. 2. Which company came up with the idea for the Wind Wing sail? A. The Pyxis Ocean. B. Cargill. C. BAR Technologies. D. Yara Marine. 3. How much fuel can each Wind Wing save per day? A. 1.65 tons. B. 2.1 tons. C. 10 tons. D. 30 tons. 4. What is the expected impact of Wind Wings on the Pyxis Ocean's pollution? A. It will reduce pollution by nearly 10%. B. It will reduce pollution by nearly 20%. C. It will reduce pollution by nearly 30%. D. It will reduce pollution by nearly 40%. Preserve a vanishing tradition among Gobi 戈壁牧民傳统保卫战 蒙古的劝诱骆驼仪式是通过劝诱者的哄诱来加强母骆驼和小骆驼的关系。然而随着当地人生活方式的改变,这种仪式的传承已经受到威胁。 1 Bactrian camels in the Gobiusually give birth to a baby came levery second year. But because of the terrible weather conditions, it is common for a mother or baby to die during or after delivery. The result is often lonely babies and sad mothers who need one another. 2 After centuries in the desert, the locals have developed a unique musical practice when they want a mother camel to accept a newborn baby camel. When the practice starts, a musician plays his instrument, usually a Mongolian flute. The mother and baby are tied together, and another musician begins to sing,“ khuus, khuus, khuus.” 3 At first, the mother either pays no attention to the baby or treats it badly. The“ coaxer(劝诱者)”, at this point, changes the music based on the behavior. The singer begins to copy the sound of the camels walking, running and voices. After many hours of this, the mother and baby are in tears, and are joined for life. 4 However, each year fewer and fewer young people are willing to learn and pass on this tradition. In addition, more and more Mongolian families are sending daughters away to study and live in cities, and those who leave almost never return. The young men who remain in the desert struggle then to find wives and raise families that can help raise camels and keep the tradition alive. On top of that, many have discovered that motorbikes are cheaper than camels. All of these are killing the traditional way of life. 5 A few Mongolians have turned to the United Nations to help save this practice. In2015, they added it to their “List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding”, but it’s hard to know what influence this can have beyond recognizing the existence of the practice. Reading Check 1. Why was the Mongolian practice developed? A. To help baby camels get along with hosts. B. To make mother camels give birth more often. C. To calm down mother camels during delivery. D. To strengthen mother and baby camels relationships. 2. What is special about the local practice mentioned in the text? A. The locals feed the mother camel special food. B. A musician plays a Mongolian flute to encourage bonding. C. The locals dance around the mother and baby camel. D. The baby camel is taken away from the mother. 3. What makes it difficult to keep the practice mentioned in the text alive? A. Desertification and climate change. B. Governments bans on the practice. C. Young people’s lack of interest and urban migration. D. Increased interest in camel racing instead of camel raising. 4. What’s the attitude of the author towards the practice? A. Confident. B.
