Unique Chinese Cultural Heritages
The Old Grand Canal
The 2,500-year-old Grand Canal — the world's longest man-made waterway, half of which is used even today — made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.It links several major rivers across the country, including the Yangtze, Huaihe and Yellow rivers, and runs through the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, besides the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
The Forbidden City
The birth of the Forbidden City, China's imperial palace of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing(1644-1911) dynasties in Beijing, is closely linked to the Grand Canal. The waterway promoted transport of materials for construction of the palace complex and helped transport workers.
Beijing Opera
Beijing Opera is a great form of the Chinese art of entertainment. It was formed in Beijing under the Qing Dynasty by taking in characters of Huiju, Kunqu and Qinqiang operas. It gathers singing, acting, gymnastics and martial arts, and was listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2010.
New Year Painting
Lunar New Year woodblock painting was a popular folk art in areas along the grand waterway. These paintings are bright and lively, and mainly use the color red, which is considered to suit both festivals and happy events.Patterns are closely related to the life and livelihood of Chinese people.Paintings from Tianjin, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces are the most popular.
Yunjin
Yunjin, or cloud brocade (锦缎), is a unique silk craft native to Nanjing city in Jiangsu province. It is famous for its splendid patterns and gentle feel, which make it more valuable than gold.In 2009, Nanjing brocade was listed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Shyness can stop you from doing all the things in life that you'd like to,” the Smiths once sang. However, research suggests that may not be the case when working as a team.
Researchers have found that when animals temper their personalities because of social rules, the efficiency of a group to undertake risky missions — such as foraging (觅食) for food — is boosted.“We see this phenomenon happening when we mix together a school of fish with wildly different personalities: the very fearless individuals and the very shy individuals tend to control what they would normally be doing when they stick with the rest of the group,” said Dr Sean Rands, the lead author of the research at the University of Bristol.
Writing in the journal PLoS Computational Biology, the researchers reported how they built a computer model to investigate the impact of social conventions and animals' personalities on the movement of individuals within a group. The model was based on an assumption in which a group of animals in a safe “home” set out to travel to a food foraging site some distance away.
The results revealed that when no social conventions were in place, their movements were governed by their personalities alone — in other words how fearless or shy they were determined how quickly they left home and arrived at the foraging site. However, when social conventions were introduced, so that the individuals had to keep an eye on each other and adjust their movements accordingly, the impact of personality reduced with less variation in how quickly they reached the destination. The team found where social conventions were present,
the group foraged more efficiently than when individuals behaved independently.“We find that if individuals pay attention to the other members of the group, the group will tend to remain at the safe site for longer, but then travel faster towards the foraging site,” the team wrote.
Rands added that for many social animals, being part of a group can bring huge benefits, and these can outweigh the influence of personality.

A.Adjust their behavior.
B.Take on risky missions.
C.Ignore social rules.
D.Travel to a distant foraging site.

6.What can we infer from the results?
A.Personalities alone determine movements.
B.Individuals prefer to behave independently.

7.What is the best title for the text?
A.Be Part of a Group
B.Stay True to Yourself

For most people, hearing the words “dinner's on the table” brings back memories of home-cooked meals shared with family. 1 However, “Dinnertime” as we currently know it was once different and has experienced a series of evolutions (演变).
2 Family members would eat in shifts, setting up a small table in a hallway or outside, or by the fireplace. In colonial (殖民的) times, the midday meal — “dinner” — was the largest one, while “supper” was a smaller evening meal. That changed during the Industrial Revolution. 3 Laborers who were not paid for their lunchtime began to eat a quick, lighter meal at midday, moving dinner to the end of the day as the main family meal. For families of all socio-economic levels, evening automatically became the time when everyone would be back at home together. Dinnertime started to be an important occasion.
At present, flexible lifestyles, changing patterns of work-life balance, and evolving family structures have led to the appearance of a new kind of family dinner. 4 A few clicks on the phone can bring people whatever their heart or stomach desires — Caribbean, Japanese, Italian and every other country's cuisine, not to mention delivery options that can meet special dietary needs. This makes sense given the various dining preferences of the newest age group.
5 Regardless of who cooks the food, where it's eaten, and who you're eating with, the nightly tradition of sharing a meal while connecting with loved ones always stands strong.
A.People began to work outside of the home.
B.Family dinners are not always this flexible.
C.There's never been so much variety for dinner.
D.Despite the changes, the central concept remains.
E.It's a magical phrase representing a warm time at sunset.
F.Families didn't eat together in the evening before the 1700s.
G.In the late 19th century dinnertime served as a symbol of stability.
“It”指代“dinner's on the table”这句话。
3.选A 上文提到“正餐”时间在工业革命期间发生了变化;后文提到“evening automatically became the time when everyone would be back at home together”。

(2024·武汉调研)Alexander sang all the time. He sang in the shower, he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break, he heard Kevin talking about the tryout (选拔赛) for the City Choir (合唱团).
“Yeah, I'm attending the tryout this weekend,” Kevin announced. “With my voice, I'm pretty much guaranteed a spot. I don't even need any practice as I am so talented. Imagine they'll want me to perform lots of solos (独唱), too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice, but Alexander still couldn't help imagining himself as a member of the choir. Wouldn't it be fun, he thought, to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing?
On the tryout day, Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one that didn't look nervous was Kevin. He had performed as a soloist many times. Alexander, on the other hand, had never taken a music lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director, Mr Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions. Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage, he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin's turn came. As Kevin's confident voice filled the room, Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next, Mr Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together. Kevin's group sang right before Alexander's, and even with four other boys singing, Kevin's voice was clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then came the time for Alexander to sing with his group.
Finally Mr Robeson told Alexander that he made it, not Kevin.
Then came the time for Alexander to sing with his group. He didn't want to sound too loud. Instead, he thoroughly enjoyed singing with the others, trying his best to integrate his voice with theirs. Finally, Mr Robeson asked the kids about their performance experience, music lessons and training. All Alexander could say was, “I had no performance experience. Neither did I attend any music lessons or training. I just really enjoy singing, and I want to learn more and practice more.” He knew his answer was not perfect, but he was willing to do whatever it took to become a better singer in the choir.
Finally Mr Robeson told Alexander that he made it, not Kevin. There must have been some mistake. “How did I make it, Mr Robeson?” asked Alexander in disbelief. “Well, you love singing. Although your voice isn't the best, with training it will improve,” said Mr Robeson. “But, what about Kevin?” Alexander asked. “Talent alone is not enough,” said Mr Robeson. “After all, we weren't looking for soloists. Team spirit and right attitudes are what we value the most.” After confirming the result, Alexander can't wait for the choir practice in the coming week.
