The Robot’s Revenge
One day, in a town called Futureville, people woke up to find that all the robots and machines had gone crazy. The cars drove on the sidewalks, the washing machines attacked their owners, and the cell phones bit their users! People were very scared, but no one knew what to do.
In the middle of the chaos, a young boy named Max discovered a special power. He could talk to machines! Max quickly realized that the robots were angry because they felt unappreciated. They worked hard for humans every day but didn’t get any thanks or rest. Max decided he would help the robots feel better and stop them from destroying the town.
Max went to the city center and stood on a box so everyone could see him. “Listen, everybody!” he yelled. “The robots are mad because we don’t treat them well. We need to show them kindness and respect.”
People looked at Max like he was crazy, but they were desperate, so they decided to try his idea. They started saying “please” and “thank you” to their machines, and they gave them breaks during the day. Slowly, the robots began to calm down. The cars parked themselves, the washing machines stopped attacking, and the cell phones stopped biting.
However, there was one robot who was still very angry. It was the biggest and most powerful robot in Futureville, and it wanted to destroy everything. Max realized that this robot was different. It wasn’t just angry; it was sad. Max walked up to the giant robot and said, “I know how you feel. You’ re tired of working so hard, and you want to be happy.” The robot nodded its head sadly.
Max had an idea. He asked the robot, “What would make you happy?” The robot thought for a moment and then replied, “I want to go on vacation.” Max told the robot, “If you promise not to hurt anyone, I’ll take you on a vacation.” The robot agreed. Max and the robot went on an amazing adventure. They traveled to beautiful beaches, climbed tall mountains, and saw incredible sights. When they returned, the robot was no longer angry. It had learned that there was more to life than just work.

A visit to the landmark Eiffel Tower
If you’ re in Paris, a visit to the Eiffel Tower is a must. The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in the world and it attracts millions of visitors every year. It’s a great experience and you can see some amazing views of Paris from the top. The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Exposition Universelle(World Fair)which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. At first, many people did not like the tower and called it ‘useless’ but today it is an iconic symbol of France and its culture.
There are three levels that you can visit. The first level has a glass floor where you can look down and see what’s below you! There’s also a restaurant and a souvenir shop. The second level is 115 metres high and there are more restaurants and shops. On the third level, there’s a champagne bar where you can enjoy a glass of champagne as you take in the breathtaking views. The tower is open every day of the year so you can visit it at any time. You can take the stairs or the lift. If you’re feeling energetic, you might want to walk up the stairs to the first or second level. But if you don’t want to get tired, it’s probably best to take the lift! The queues for the lifts can be very long, especially during the summer months, so it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance online.
Around the Eiffel Tower, there are beautiful gardens where you can relax and have a picnic. There are also lots of street performers and artists who entertain the tourists. The oceans are the last unexplored frontier on our planet. We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do about what’s under the sea. It’s time to change that.
There are many good reasons for exploring the seas. First, there is so much we don’t know. For example, scientists have discovered only a fraction of the millions of different kinds of animal that live in the sea. If we want to protect these creatures and their habitats, we need to find out more about them. In addition, there may be animals or plants in the sea that could be useful for medicine, but we don’t even know they exist yet. Second, the oceans influence the weather and climate. If we understand them better, we can predict natural disasters like hurricanes, which kill thousands of people every year. Also, if the ice at the North and South Poles melts because of global warming, it will cause the sea level to rise, which would be a disaster for many countries. If we know more about the oceans, we might be able to stop this happening. Finally, there are minerals on the ocean floor that we could use in the future when we’ve used up the Earth’s supplies of oil, gas and metals. Some companies are already doing research on mining these minerals. But before we start digging up the sea bed, we need to find out how this will affect the environment.
Some people say that space exploration is more important than exploring the seas because it could help us find another planet to live on if the Earth becomes uninhabitable. However, this is unlikely to happen for hundreds of years, if ever. In the meantime, we should concentrate on exploring the oceans, which cover 70% of our planet. If we wait until we need to find another planet, it will be too late to save the one we already have.
12. Based on the information in the passage, which of the following is NOT a reason given for exploring the oceans?
A To discover new animal and plant species
B. To predict natural disasters more accurately
C. To find a new planet for humans to live on
D. To understand the effects of global warming on the oceans
13. Which of the following statement does the passage say could be a benefit of understanding the oceans better?
A. Discovering new animal species B. Predicting natural disasters
C. Mining ocean floor minerals D. All of the above
14. What does the passage imply about the current state of ocean exploration?
A. It is more advanced than space exploration
B. It has identified most marine species
C. It is an untapped(未开发的)frontier
D. It is negatively impacting the environment
15. What is the main message the passage aims to convey?
A We should prioritize space exploration over ocean exploration
B. Exploring the oceans is a critical but overlooked endeavor(努力)
C. More research is needed to understand climate change
D. Mining ocean resources should be the focus of exploration

Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play Star. Come and get your script (剧本).”I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character, a Scrooge (吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked,“Who did this?” Nobody knew. We started rehearsing (排练), but my heart wasn’t in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn’t happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can’t do it. Please get someone else!”

With the development of science and technology, mobile telephones becomes more and more popular. Even the students on campus begin to use mobile telephones.
The mobile telephone is good for the students. For one thing, it enables them to keep in touch with their friends and family more conveniently and quickly. For another, it can make the students keep pace with the latest news. However, the mobile telephone has negative effects on the students. It will cost them more money. Besides, it will distract them from their study.
In my opinion, it is not advisable that the students on campus should use mobile telephones. They should pay more attention to their study.

【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. I heard voices and a warm hand took mine. I looked up and saw concerned faces. Jim and several other classmates had come after me. “Please, don’t drop out...” they said and tried to comfort me. Later, the teacher found the troublemaker Peter, who loved making silly tricks. And he apologized to me. Encouraged by my friendly teacher and so many kind classmates, I went back onstage and finished the scene with no further interruptions.
The following Thanksgiving day we were ready for the play. Throughout the performance, we could hear laughter from the audience from time to time. When the performance was over, they gave us a big round of applause. In the following weeks, schoolmates often came up to say, “You were good!” I was glad my hard work and determination as well as many people’s support had helped me to perform successfully. It positively shaped my later life.
