If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location(位置)better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”. According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 24.What can we learn about the first experiment? A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer. B.The two groups remembered the information equally well. C.The first group did not try to remember the information. D.The second group did not understand the information. 25.In transactive memory, people ________. A.We are using memory differently. B.We are becoming more intelligent. C.We have poorer memories than before. D.We need a better way to access information. A.keep the information in mind B.change the quantity of information C.organize information like a computer D.remember how to find the information 26.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research? A.We are using memory differently. B.We are becoming more intelligent. C.We have poorer memories than before. She lost herself in playing the piano there. ”可知,something指的是第一段中提到的piano,由此推测出,这把钢琴之前是属于劳伦斯先生的小孙女的。故填It belonged to Mr. Laurence’s granddaughter./Mr. Laurence’s granddaughter. [亮点词汇] ①be forced to do sth被迫去做某事 ②practice doing sth练习做某事 ③get tired of对……感到疲倦 ④world-famous举世闻名的 ⑤make sb do sth让某人做某事 [高分句型] ①When I was young I was forced to practise playing the piano every day by parents. A.keep the information in mind B.change the quantity of information C.organize information like a computer D.remember how to find the information 26.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research? A.We are using memory differently. B.We are becoming more intelligent. C.We have poorer memories than before. D.We need a better way to access information. This public spirited young person was now a university student. 36 Bert found his love early in life. When he was around 4 or 5, he always lived to watch different insects, especially beautiful swallowtails (凤蝶). One interesting fact he learned about swallowtails was that their bright colors warned hungry animals that they tasted bad. 37 But the reason he really fell in love with them was that they were very accessible. For example, if you wanted to interest swallowtails, you planted some zinnias, a kind of bright flowers. 38 He raised a large number of swallowtails in it over the years. With the world’s swallowtail population falling, Bert wanted people to realize that if insects like swallowtails disappeared, so would all the others above them on the food chain. 39 to make the fact clear and easy to understand for other students. Part of the joy for Bert was watching the younger students get excited when running after swallowtails. He thought it was really meaningful. She only knew he was kind, and she enjoyed herself heartily. “Mother, I’m going to work Mr. Laurence a pair of slippers. He is so kind to me. Can I do it?” asked Beth, one day. “Yes, my dear. It will be a nice way of thanking him. The girls will help you about them, and I will pay for the making up,” replied Mrs. March. After many serious discussions with Meg and Jo, the work started. Beth worked away early and late, and the slippers were finished soon. Then she wrote a short, simple note, and with Laurie’s help, got them onto the study table one morning before the old gentleman was up. When this excitement was over, Beth waited to see what would happen. At the door her sisters stopped her, all pointing and all saying at once, “Look there! Look there! Beth did look, and turned pale with delight and surprise, for there stood a little cabinet piano, with a letter lying on the glossy lid, saying” “For Miss Elizabeth March” “For me?” gasped Beth, holding onto Jo. “Yes, all for you, my precious!” cried Jo, hugging her sister and offering the note. “You read it! I can’t, I feel so excited!” said Beth. Jo opened the paper and began to read: “Miss March, I have had many pairs of slippers in my life, but I never had any that suited me so well as yours.
