My day of online learning
网上学习的一天
1 Each morning, the sound of the alarm wakes me up. I grab my smartphone and start my day. I open variousapps to read global news as I eat my breakfast. Every day, I learn something new from my phone screen.
2 Before I begin studying, I open my computer. I connect to the Internet and start a new day. In my digital classroom, I can study with classmates from many places. I read and write emails and complete assignments, all of which happen online.
3 During my lunch break, I enjoy using social media. I chat with family and friends, sharing jokes and ideas. I view pictures from unfamiliar places and watch videos that make me want to create new art. Sometimes, I come across book recommendations or notice an amusing dance video.
4 After my afternoon studies, I occasionally shop online. I often look over study products that might be useful or interesting to me. I usually find so many exciting items that my shopping cart is full by the end!
5 After dinner, I use the Internet to learn new things. I log onto websites that teach various topics, such as environmental knowledge, computer programming, or podcasts about planets and stars. Meanwhile, I must go online to do research to start my homework. My history teacher, my Chinese teacher and my English teacher all often give homework tasks that require me to go online and look up some accurate information. So, when you find I am online in the evening, I am likely reading online resources.
6 To end my day of learning, I turn to the Internet for relaxation before going to bed. I watch TV shows or listen to music. These activities help me unwind and prepare for a new day.
7 The Internet aids me in learning, connecting with others, and discovering new things. It turns every ordinary day into a thrilling adventure. As I lie in bed, I eagerly anticipate another day spent online to explore more useful knowledge.

Embracing cyborg futures
与赛博格式未来相拥
1 It's natural that people want to use the latest innovations to better themselves. Smart devices can truly do incredible things and help to simplify our day. They can also enhance our perceptions, arm us with knowledge, and open up a world of new possibilities. A few people have even decided to make the leap and transform themselves to become cyborgs.
2 Cyborg is a term used to describe a being that is half human and half machine. This may sound like something out of science fiction films, but some people have already adopted this lifestyle. One is artist Neil Harrison. He was born completely colorblind, and could only see black and white images. It seemed that he would never experience colors. After attending a cybernetics talk in college, he met an inventor who agreed to make a special device for him. The inventors team designed an eye Borg, a mechanical eye that changed colors into sound frequencies. This enabled Harrison to hear colors and perceive the world in a different way. He started going to museums to“ hear” classic paintings. In fact, a simple walk down a grocery store filled with colorful products produces some catchy tunes (动听的曲调).Harrison loves his eye-borg so much that he rarely takes it off. He now gives talks urging others to consider adding their own mechanical improvements.
3 British scientist Kevin Warwick conducted his own experiment in 1998. He implanted a chip into his arm, which he used to control lights and other appliances at home. He later expanded the project by placing electrodes (电极) inside his nervous system and linking the electrodes to the Internet. This allowed him to control external objects including robotic arms and loudspeakers. His work remains influential as this example of extended sensory input was the first of its kind.
4 You can decide whether becoming a cyborg is right for you, or if you're content to remain a human like the rest of us.

Social networking
网络社交对个人成长的影响
1 The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact, there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships. It also found that our online friendships actually allow us to have discussions with a much more diverse set of people than in the real world and improve ourpsychological happiness.
2 However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not only our friendships but also our character.
3 Professor Larry D. Rosen, in his book I Disorder, presents evidence that social networking is turning us into narcissists (自恋者). He says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive, and show antisocial behavior in their offline lives. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing—empathy. This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends' points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.
4 Sherry Turkle, a professor of social sciences at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others. She believes, as is the title of her book, that we are simply“ Alone Together”.
5 These potential changes in our character are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.
