Unit 5 Working the Land
Using Language&Assessing Your Progress
Part 01 Listening
In pairs, discuss what you can see in the photos and how you think each photo relates to world hunger.
3
What can you see in the photos?
How does each photo relate to world hunger?
The first photo represents the idea of drought. Either a river or a lake bed has been exposed by receding waters, leaving behind cracked soil. A child is pouring water onto the ground. When there is drought, crops cannot grow and animals may die.
What can you see in the photos?
How does each photo relate to world hunger?
The second photo represents the idea of war. Hunger often comes with war, as often people cannot farm, or they cannot work to earn money to buy food. And, even if they had money to buy food, the markets might be empty or closed.
What can you see in the photos?
How does each photo relate to world hunger?
The third photo represents famine. The child in the photo is a victim of famine, which is why his/her arm and hand are so thin. Famine is when the crops do not grow and there is not enough food for everyone to eat. While famine can be caused by drought, some of the worst famines in world history had other sources, such as insects or diseases that destroyed the crops, or weather that was either too hot or too cool for the crops to grow properly.

adj.

Why did many farmers welcome the introduction of chemical farming?
It's a great way to fight crop disease.
Read for details.
For example, pesticides can damage the land by killing not only harmful bacteria and insects, but also helpful ones. In addition, these chemicals can stay in the soil and underground water sources for a long time. This affects the crops grown on the land and, in turn, the animals and humans who digest them. Many people worry that these chemicals may make them ill and even cause cancer.
vt.

Read for details.
In fact, some pesticides like DDT have been prohibited in most countries because of the damage they cause to people and the environment. As for chemical fertilisers, crops grown with them usually grow too fast to be rich in nutrition. They may look beautiful on the outside, but inside there is usually more water than essential minerals, and they often have less flavour as well.
n. 营养
adj.

adj.
Read for details.
Organic farmers also use many other methods to produce rich soil. They often change the kind of crop grown in each field every year. For instance, they may grow corn or wheat in a field one year, and then grow beans there the next. Why different crops are grown is because they put important minerals back into the ground, making it ready for the next batch of crops.

Organic farmers also plant diverse crops that use different depths of soil to help keep it rich. For example, peanuts grow on the ground’s surface, but many other vegetables put down deep roots. The goal of using different organic farming methods is to grow good food while avoiding damage to the environment or to people’s health.
句中 while doing 是省略结构,相当于 while 引导的时间状语从句 while it avoids..

adv.
