Self-control 自控力
The annoyances of young people varies from person to person. Each, however, is faced with the same question: how to be in control of himself? Recent headlines have seen many teens being distracted by phones, behaving inappropriately in public, maxing out their credit cards or failing to meet assignment deadlines for procrastination.
In contrast to them, the teens of a school in our city prove that age is no barrier to self-control, a lifelong value the school promote with an innovative programme. Interviewed by a moderator, school principal gave several examples to clarify how the programme works.
To begin with, the school introduced an activity called the “Social Media Detox”, which motivated the students to last or manage seven days without access to social media until they switched on their devices again. Few throw in the towel and most realized they relied on social media so much that much time had been occupied with constantly checking phones and updating profiles.
To buy the homeless in this district “Necessities Bags”, the considerate school launched a fundraising campaign, where each student donated one dollar for each inappropriate behavior in public, such as spitting, not littering into a rubbish bin, or cycling in headphones without security concerns. Inside the bags are items like toothpaste, soap and a jar of nails used to build a shelter.
The school also required students to take courses in personal finances, which seems to be unprecedentedly important for younger generations.Students learned to think more objectively about saving and investing, which not only are about the here and now, but also represent a vision for the future. Likewise, this taught them self-control and made them better equipped in their adult lives to make informed decisions.
