I was a dreamer as a child and I read about the great sailors and those who enjoy taking risks.I
was the girl who fell out of trees and got muddy and lost my shoes, but I showed little interest in sports.
国考卷·5月卷B·英语第3页(共8页)
I was never much of a team player, which probably accounts for the fact that I'm now a solo(独自)
skier.
The real undertaking started after I graduated from my university. I no longer wanted to stay in my
familiar environment, thinking I really needed a life change. I said to myself,"Right, I'm going off to
see the world." I ran into some rock art researchers. They were exploring bits of the deep Sahara and
looking for new paintings, so I joined them twice a year for a while, finding new rock art. It made me
see that the world was still a wild place and you could go to remote parts of it.
I often think,"Where else can I see that's so remote? Where else can I see what nobody else gets
to see?" I went to the South Pole with a team for the first time, and then, two years later, I did a solo
trip there and set the new world record. The record was 42 davs and I was aiming to do it in 40. In the
end I did it in 39 davs and nine hours. The obvious next thing is to go and do the North Pole and
really want to see the Arctic.
No woman has ever skied solo to the North Pole. though some great girls have had a go. I'm trying
to do it from Canada. which is thought of as the hardest route to the North Pole because the ice is blown
from the Pole towards Canada, so you end up running against the waves, taking two steps forward and
being carried one back. I hope I can put quite a lot of work into talking to companies and communities
and trying to convince them to preserve those wild places.
24. What sort of girl was the author as a child?

26. Why does the author decide to ski solo to the North Pole from Canada?
A. To learn from other great girls.
B. To achieve her goal more easily.
C. To challenge extreme environments.
D. To meet more companies and communities.
27. What does the text convey?
A. Ups and downs make one strong.
B. Fame is a great thirst of the young
C. Creativity results from challenging authority
D. Positive thinking and action result in success.

In June 1938. writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster introduced readers to Superman. Since

On the surface, Western Australia's Great Sandy Desert might appear calm. But deep
underground, blind moles(m鼠) covered in silky yellow fur are "swimming" through the sand. These
creatures that are considered elusive spend so much of their lives below the surface that they remain
largely unknown to wildlife biologists.
Now,Aboriginal rangers(护林员)have made a sighting of one of the animals called"kakarratul"
by the Martu, the local people of central Western Australia. This marks the second kakarratul sighting
in just six months. Historically, people only see the species five to ten times every decade.
Kakarratuls are very small and have no eves, Their bodies are covered in soft fur, and
1they
primarily eat worms. They're also perfectly adapted for life in the tough Australian land. Rather than
living in the hot sun, they live almost entirely underground-digging holes as far as 8. 2 feet below the
surface-where they move through the sand in a unique way. The Kakarratul is an amazing creature
that "swims" through the sand of Australia's western deserts. They carve a path and fill it in as they go
forward through the sand.
The creatures can survive by just "breathing the air that moves between sand," wrote Joe
Benshemesh, a biologist with the National Malleefowl Recovery Group, for Australian Geographic.
“They save energy and resources by allowing their body temperature to reflect that of the surrounding
sand,"he added.
The moles periodically come to the surface, especially during periods of cool, rainy weather. But
they don't appear often, so wildlife scientists don't know their population size. They are regarded as a
species of "least concern". Local rangers try their best to take good care of kakarratuls, but they "aren't
easy to find," said Lynette Wildridge, a senior Nyangumarta ranger.
32. What does the underlined word"elusive" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Uncomfortable to follow.
B. Difficult to understand.
C.Expensive to buy.
D. Useless to feed
国考卷·5月卷B·英语第5页(共8页)
33. Which best describes the second kakarratul sighting in 6 months?

A. Dangerous.
C. Formal.
D.Unusual.
34. Why do kakarratuls live deep underground?
A. To find food more easily.
B. To get away from the hot weather.
C. To avoid the harm from humans.
D. To breathe more and fresher air.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Kakarratuls: Swimmers through Desert Sand B. Kakarratuls: Unique Animals to Australians
C. Local Rangers Look After Kakarratuls Well
D. Australia Is Trving Hard to Find Kakarratuls

Librarians, and the people who support libraries, make use of the library's wonders. 36 These
people, in their quiet way, have maintained one of civilization's great traditions: the gathering of the
human life experience. In this way, libraries have been and shall always be the engines of civilization's
progress.
In fact. without libraries, such progress would be impossible, especially in our modern era. These
days, we all depend upon libraries where we can explore the thoughts and actions of others. 37
Good films or television programs have their place, but when you really need to understand a
question in depth, you've got to turn to books. 38 Therefore, libraries have become very important
to ensure that reading doesn't become a hobby for the rich.
39 They enlighten our world, and encourage the expansion of culture. With these words in
mind, I think we owe it to ourselves and to future generations to serve others by keeping learning and
literacy alive. The future of the country absolutely depends on a literate(受过教育的) population, and
reaching that goal involves strong support of all kinds of libraries.
40 It would be an education with no shortage of excellent teachers and a full supply of the
world's best books. I do strongly believe that "the more you read, the more you know. The more you
know, the smarter you grow..." So,let's take good care of our libraries.
A. Libraries aren't just about books.
B. Books are the lifeblood of the library
C. And books are so expensive these davs.
D. I think they are the heroes of civilization
E. Education promotes the development of libraries and civilization
F. If I could give young people a valuable gift, it would be a good education.
G. And that gives us a remarkable power to change and grow and do things better.
