In his life, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works— more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Though he is widely read, Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems. Though born in California, Frost was brought up in New England, where he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dream, he remained upset for years, producing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. Finally, Frost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his works might be better received in London. It was, and in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frost’s work and brought it back to the United States, publicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frost’s collections became bestsellers, and he became a famous figure. From then on, Frost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961, he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼) of John F. Kennedy. He recited his poem, TheGiftOutright, from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963. More importantly, Frost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration. 81. What makes Frost “the statesman of American letters”? A. The comments of other writers. B. His literary achievements. C. The complexity of his poems. D. His political activities. 82. What do we know about Frost before 1912? A. He continued writing after his graduation from Dartmouth College. B. He was well received in London for his first collection. C. He failed to make much money with his publication. D. He produced enough works to achieve literary success. 83. According to the passage, what brought Frost immediate success in the US? A. The literary value of his poetry. B. The publication of his first collection. C. The invitation from John F. Kennedy. D. The recommendation by Amy Lowell. 84. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Literary Life of Robert Frost: An Overview B. Robert Frost and the Twentieth Century C. Robert Frost: A Historical Figure D. The Popularity of Robert Frost 2 What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It’s important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves helps us to do better, to be better. We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks gray. On those days, it’s easy to feel bad about ourselves. Looking on the bright side of things can help us transform tough times: “Having a difficult time in one subject doesn’t mean that I’m not a good student.” The good news is that psychologists tell us that we are hurt less by the misfortunes of life than we are by how we see them. And this is never truer than when applied to how we see ourselves. Not only do we have the choice to paint the events and situations in our lives in the color that we choose, but we also have the choice to paint ourselves in the color we choose. In other words, you get to choose whether the cup is half-full or half-empty when it comes to how you see yourself! Many teens we heard from also know how important it is to cast a positive vote when it comes to their own self-worth, saying that self-esteem and actions went hand in hand. From becoming a better athlete to getting better grades, from being a friend to attracting better friends, from getting along with your parents to being granted more privileges, self-esteem plays a big role. 85. In the writer’s view, why may we misunderstand others? A. Because we can’t put ourselves in others’ positions. B. Owing to the ways in which we think of ourselves. C. Due to the fact that we ourselves have a bad time. D. Because it is hard to put ourselves in others’ shoes. 86. What should we do if we are suffering a hard time? A. Focus more attention on our studies. B. Speak out the bitters and pains openly. C. Spare some time to see a psychologist. D. Regard the things around us positively. 87. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Psychologists. B. Misfortunes. C. Attitudes. D. Achievements. 88. Which can be the best title of the passage? A. It really counts how we see ourselves B. Life is always filled with pains and sorrows C. We need to think big to become a success D. Forget those unchangeable life realities 参考答案 一、 1. permanent/ermanent 【解析】考查形容词。句意:即使相对较小的伤害也可能导致严重和永久性的伤害损坏,甚至死亡。根据单词首字母以及句意“永久的”以及前文并列的serious,可知应填形容词作定语,故填permanent。 2. embarrassed/mbarrassed In his life, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works— more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Though he is widely read, Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.(Robert Frost(1874-1963)是二十世纪美国文坛的政治家,是一位罕见的受到大学教授和普通市民阅读和尊敬的民族诗人。在他的一生中,弗罗斯特四次获得普利策奖,比美国历史上任何一位诗人都要多。他最著名的诗歌包括The Road Not Taken、Fire and Ice和Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening。尽管Frost的作品被广泛阅读,但由于其诗歌的复杂性,他也是美国最受误解的作家之一。)”可知,本文主要介绍的是Robert Frost的生平和主要成就,因此最好的题目是A选项“The Literary Life of Robert Frost: An Overview(Robert Frost的文学生涯:概述)”,故选A。 2 85.
