4 Summer Jobs to Get Paid and Take a Break
Camp counsellor (辅导员)
Most kids head off to camp during the summertime, and if you’re past the typical age of being a camper, relive your youth by becoming a summer camp counsellor. You can enjoy participating in activities, planning events, and partaking in arts and crafts. It’s one of the best summer jobs because it also builds your leadership skills while you earn extra money. Depending on your schedule, you can work to fit your needs. The average starting pay is $10.5 an hour.
Lifeguard
Spending time on the water is something many people do during the summer. And if you're good at swimming, then being a lifeguard is a great option for you. The hours are flexible, and the pay is great, with the average hourly rate at $11.50.
Amusement park employee
An amusement park is a great place to work during the summertime. There are a variety of positions you can get hired for — from ride operator to food service to booth tender — and the average starting pay is $10 an hour. The hours are flexible and negotiable depending on where you decide to work: the larger the park, the more employees they’ll have, which could mean fewer hours they’ll need you to cover.
Dog walker
If you’re looking for a relaxing job, being a dog walker could be the right choice for you. Dog walking hours and pay are easily negotiable, as you can simply discuss with the dog’s owner what your availability is, when they need you, and what your pay rate is. Getting some exercise with a furry friend will feel more like a relaxing pastime than a job. And if you wish to continue being a dog walker, it’s the job that’s easiest to keep year-round.
21.What is the benefit of being a camp counsellor?
A.It brings back the glory.
B.It boosts artistic creativity.
C.It is easy to do and well-paid.
D.It develops competence in leadership.
22.For which job can the pay be negotiated?
A.Camp counselor. B.Lifeguard.
C.Amusement park employee. D.Dog walker.
23.What do the four summer jobs have in common?
A.They need full-time employees. B.The working hours are flexible.
C.The pay remains unclear. D.They need relevant certificates.

In 2023, the UK SpoGomi competition was scheduled for August, with the world cup in Tokyo in November. I formed my team with Alex Winship, and my brother Jonny.
SpoGomi is a sport involving litter-picking by teams of three. Teams collect litter in given areas within a strict time limit, scoring point s for the weight of collected items, with some items awarded more points than others. One gram of cigarette butts is worth three points versus only 0.1 per gram for burnable rubbish. The team with the most point s wins.
Initially we were drawn to taking part because of the prize of a trip to Japan. There were about 20 teams in the UK competition, which took place in London’s Hackney marshes. We won by only 33 points, which is equivalent to just one glass bottle.
We were then heading for the world cup. The competition was intense. After the first half, Japan came top and we were second. My muscles were aching and I felt completely worn out from the heat of Tokyo on a sunny day. I didn’t have much more energy, and Iremember Alex and Jonny saying the same, but we had this feeling of being on the edge of something amazing. We had to just keep pushing. We pulled ahead in the second half while carrying several kilos of litter over two miles at a time. We ended up coming first, ahead of Japan, with 57 kg of rubbish collected.
I wouldn’t have been someone who would have picked up litter off the street. At the early stages of our training, we were so bad at finding litter. Then, just after the London competition, on the way home, we saw so much. We were just much more aware of it.Once you’re drawn into SpoGomi, your attitude towards litter and how you contribute completely changes — it certainly has for us.
24.What can we learn about SpoComi?
A.It is a sport to pick up rubbish. B.It has particularly strict rules.
C.It is a team consisting of 3. D.It sets limits to collected items.
25.What was the result of the London competition?
A.The result was controversial.
B.No team entered the world cup.
C.The author’s team had a narrow victory.
D.The author’s team had an absolute advantage.
26.How did the author feel in the second half of the world cup?
A.Nervous but hopeful. B.Indifferent and bored.
C.Exhausted but determined. D.Discouraged and uninterested.
27.What is presented in the last paragraph?
A.Providing tips on picking litter.
B.Showing desire for SpoGomi training.
C.Advocating devotion to the world cup.
D.Encouraging engagement in SpoGomi.

A new study from a team at the University of Pittsburgh has discovered blood-based markers that can reveal someone’s biological age, which could help treat various health problems that can happen as our bodies get older.
We have our actual ages—the number of years we’ve been alive—and then we have biological ages, which is related to the wear and tear on cells and organs. Knowing this biological age can help us work out disease risk, tailor treatments, and better understand the different rates at which our bodies break down.
“Imagine two people aged 65,” says Aditi Gurkar, a scientist at the University of Pittsburgh. “One rides a bike to work and goes skiing on the weekends and the other can’t climb a flight of stairs.”
They have the same age, but different biological ages. Why do these two people age differently? To help answer this question, the researchers enlisted the help of 196 elderly adults, separated into two groups: one group of volunteers aged 75 or older who were classified as healthy agers, and the other group of volunteers aged 65-75 who were classified as rapid agers. The healthy agers were able to climb a flight of stairs or walk for 15 minutes without resting, while the rapid agers had to take breaks through each activity.
The distinction gave the study team the chance to look at differences between the groups in metabolites(代谢物): small chemical substances left by biological processes in the body. They can be used as evidence for which processes are happening, and how well they’re running.
“We chose to look at metabolites because they are dynamic,” says Gurkar. “They change in real time to reflect our current health and how we feel, and we have the power to influence them through our lifestyle, diet and environment.”
With more research, it might be possible to develop a blood test for quick and easy biological age judgment. That test could then be run on people at earlier ages, when changes to molecular processes are easier to edit.
28.What do the underlined words “the wear and tear” mean in paragraph 2?
A.The damage. B.The repair. C.The examination. D.The decrease.
29.How did the researchers do the study according to the fourth paragraph?
A.By analysing some figures. B.By making a comparison.
C.By giving an example. D.By grouping volunteers randomly.
30.Why did the team do research on metabolites?
A.They can affect our lifestyle and diet. B.They can reflect our current thoughts.
C.They can be taken out and tested easily. D.They can show the present body conditions.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Rare Disease Resulted from Blood
B.A Better Way to Keep Us Younger
C.A Blood Test Indicating Health Problems
D.An Approach to Becoming Stronger

A biotech company announced that it has reached an important milestone: the creation of a long-sought kind of stem cell for the closest living relative of the woolly mammoth (猛象).
“This is probably the most significant step in the early stages of this project,” said George Church, a geneticist at Harvard University. The woolly mammoth was extinct thousands of years ago. Church has been working to bring the mammoth and other extinct species back to life using the latest cloning and genetic (基因的) engineering techniques.
And now the company says scientists have for the first time created stem cells for the mammoth’s closest living relative, Asian elephants. The achievement is still far from the ultimate goal of creating herds (牧群) of giant hairy beasts, but Church said, “It’s a major step. This is kind of like asking Neil Armstrong if he plans to go to Mars—kind of missing the point he just landed on the moon on Apollo 11.”
Scientists can now try to use cloning techniques and gene editing to control the cells in the hope of someday creating elephants with key characters of mammoths, such as heavy coats and the layers of fat that enabled them to survive in cold climates.
Some scientists have different ideas. “What are you going to get out of this?” asked Karl Flessa, a professor of geosciences at the University of Arizona. “If you’ re going to release a herd into the Arctic tundra, is that herd going to go marching off to its second extinction in the face of global warming?”
But Church and his colleagues defended the project. Church said the woolly mammoth program could lead to new ways to protect endangered species like Asian elephants by expanding their habitat and helping scientists study the animals. Reintroducing elephants with woolly mammoth characters could also help fight global warming by restoring ecosystems in ways that would help reduce the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere.
32.Which field does the creation mainly belong to?
A.Research on species. B.Clone technology.
C.Animal protection. D.Space exploration.
33.What does the author want to explain by mentioning Neil Armstrong?
A.The advancement of space technology. B.The challenges met during the project.
C.The astronaut’s determination. D.The significance of the achievement.
34.What’s Flessa’s attitude towards the project?
A.Approving. B.Tolerant. C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The benefits of the project. B.The ways to save endangered species.
C.The steps to reduce our carbon footprint. D.The causes of global warming.

A Birthday Surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa’s hand absently stroked (抚摩) the head of his old companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. “He does this day after day?” I asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. “I don’t know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes that I can’t satisfy -a desire for the past. The past can’t be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever,” Mama sighed.
“I’m going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee. “What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here?” I asked,
“We’re not thinking,” he said softly. “We’re wishing.” I sat on the grass beside his chair. “Wishing for what?” “For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it,” I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. “But Ralph and I have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually impossible.” “Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?” I asked.
Papa grinned (咧嘴大笑), and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality. “Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating sandwiches,” Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends. They’d start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.

M: Well, I picked up tennis when I was 3 and turned professional at the age of 17.
W: What’s your most unforgettable match in your professional tennis career?
M: It was the 2017 Australian Open. At that time, I hadn’t trained for almost 6 months because of my severe knee injury. I received an operation and it took me a longtime to recover. I hadn’t expected that I would make it to the final and win my title.
W: Amazing! How did you do that?

【原文】M: Hi, Jessica. I’m really struggling with this term’s workload.
W: Have you considered making a study guide? It’s a useful tool to take the stress out of studying.
M: Sounds great. My main problem is that my study folder is full of notes and worksheets, and is totally disorganized. I don’t know where to start.
W: Okay. Well, the main thing is to have everything in order. Whatever you are reviewing, it’s important that it’s arranged for your particular needs of that subject and in the most user-friendly way you can. What kind of learner are you?
M: I’m not sure.
W: Well, visual learners prefer using images, colors and maps to organize information. Logical learners would rather use logic, reasoning and systems. I’m an emotional learner, which means I need to connect to information emotionally to understand it.
M: Well, I’m very much dependent on vision as a way of taking in information.
W: Then I suggest reorganizing your notes using colour-coded sections, and you’ll probably start to grasp information a lot quicker.

【原文】
When all the animals of a species die out, the whole world loses. That creature is gone forever. Many people are worried about this happening to a large number of wild animals. They spend time campaigning to help preserve wildlife. One of the best-known preservationists is Caroline Smith. She is an attractive young woman who works for the National Grand Zoo.
Caroline Smith's vast knowledge of animals makes her a frequent guest on TV talk shows. She has been on the "Kyrie Belle Show" over forty times. She explains common errors in thinking about wildlife. For example, gorillas aren't the violent, cruel and rude offenders they appear to be. They are really quite shy. Monkeys that smile aren't as happy as they seem. In fact, a monkey's ear-to-ear smile means "watch out". Snakes really help nature by eating harmful insects. So people should try to protect them. Caroline Smith hopes that once people understand animals better, they will do their best to preserve them. How lucky animals are to have a friend like Caroline Smith!

Making Friends Through Letters
Aimed at helping us high school students make friends by writing letters, an activity was held by the City Youth League last week.
The activity was held among all the high schools in our city. It began with the participants writing a letter, in which they made a self introduction and shared all the topics they were interested in. Then the letters were randomly sent to students in other schools. It’s not hard to imagine how excited we were when receiving a letter from a stranger. It was with this traditional method of communication that we made new friends to share our sorrow and happiness.
All in all, not only did the activity promote mutual communications among students but also it relieved the pressure brought by intense study.

67.One possible version
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. I decided to fix up the old boat. The boat didn’t fall apart, and the paint had faded and cracked. We spent several weekends repairing and painting the boat. I replaced the faded and cracked seat cushions while my friends repaired the motor. We expected Papa to be proud of the boat a s he and Ralph went out on the lake again. Tired as we were, we were happy to complete the restoration. I wouldn’t let off the secret until Papa’s birthday.
Then came the day and we were all eager to give him a surprise. He could hardly believe his eyes when we showed him the new boat. Then we said “Happy birthday” to him in chorus, and he was so touched that tears blurred his eyes. After that, we put sandwiches and dog biscuits on it while Mama also bought Papa a new hat. Soon, we all stood by the lake and watched as Papa and Ralph sailed away, Papa waving and laughing. Seeing him so happy, I felt that everything I did for him was rewarding.
