The town of Nong Khai sees the fewest fireballs but has the largest festival, with boat races, and cultural performances. Monkey Buffet, last Sunday in November The town of Lopburi is full of monkeys, who rush around temples, making misbehavior in the form of taking away food, purses, cameras, and whatever else they can catch from unsuspecting people. It is they that draw in the tourist business, making Lopburi hold the festival. Well decorated tables are set out on the grounds, where the monkeys can help themselves to sausages, dessert, fruit and other dishes prepared by local chefs. 12 Surin Elephant Round-Up, third weekend in November The elephant has always held a special place in Thai culture. The people of Surin, in northeast Thailand, were known for their ability to train elephants. This ten-day festival displays the skills and talents of several hundred elephants. Loi Krathong, late November Loi Krathong pays respect to the river goddess at the end of the rainy season. After sunset, the Thais set the krathongs (水灯) afloat on rivers, saying goodbye to the bad luck of the past year and making wishes for the new one. In the sky, there are also hundreds of floating lanterns. Loi Krathong was born in Sukhothai, which remains the most popular place to celebrate the holiday. Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya are two other good spots. 21. At which festival can tourists witness a special natural phenomenon? A. Loi Krathong. B. Monkey Buffet. C. Naga Fireball Festival. D. Surin Elephant Round-Up. 21. 根据Naga Fireball Festival, late October中的“thousands of Naga fireballs shoot up from the bottom of the Mekong River, in Thailand, and disappear into the air, for which there is no scientific explanation.” 22. Why does Lopburi hold Monkey Buffet? A. To raise awareness to protect animals. B. To thank monkeys’ roles in tourism. C. To keep monkeys from the temples. D. To promote local special foods. 22. Monkey Buffet, last Sunday in November中的“It is they that draw in the tourist business, making Lopburi hold the festival.” 23. Homer was just 7 when he sent the letter to Santa. It read, “Dear Santa Claus, Will you please send me a box of paints, also a nine cent reader, and a school bag to put them in? And if you have any nuts, or candy, or toys to spare, would you kindly send me some? And you will please a seven year old boy.” The Mellen family kept and treasured this note for 98 years in a little box containing “private little things like locks of hair, or the first picture that was taken,” Homer’s son, Larry Mellen, 79, explained, in order to “put away for memories for grandchildren.” Homer’s granddaughter, Laurie Bloomfield, 49, of Nova Scotia, shared the note with us after reading a recent story about a 7-year-old girl’s expectations from Santa this year. The little girl’s list ended up going wildly viral last week with one of the 17 items on the list being “A little thing that can turn into anything at anytime,” which her father was quick to point out was impossible, flatly responding, “You cannot have this.” The little girl also asked for a mix of big-ticket items, like an iPod Touch and $1,000, about which her father said, “This is Christmas, not an Italian wedding.” When comparing the two 7-year-olds’ lists, you can’t help but notice how much our society has changed! Kids these days usually expect to see loads of presents under the tree, not just one or two. They ask primarily for costly items. And most of the “must-have” gifts are purely for entertainment. And once the novelty(新鲜)wears off, they are thrown aside. A hundred years ago, people worked hard to afford the things that matter. They prioritized “needs” over “wants” and families were truly grateful for what they had. 24. What did Homer Mellen focus on regarding his Christmas gifts? A. Their popularity. B. Their quality. C. Their practicality. D. Their prices. 24. 答案:C 命题立意:细节理解题 答案解析:根据霍默的愿望清单中提到的a box of paints, also a nine cent reader, and a school bag to put them in信息可知,他的愿望集中在礼物的实用性上。 25. What best describes the tone of the letter by Homer Mellen? A. Annoyed. B. Modest. C. Worried. D. Ambitious. 25. Will you please send me…?以及would you kindly send me some? And you will please a seven year old boy. 12 26. What did the little girl’s father want to convey in the second to the last paragraph? A. His daughter was too curious about Italy. B. The wish list went beyond his expectations. C. Italian wedding was too expensive to hold. D. He didn’t allow her daughter to list her wishes. 26. 再结合小女孩父亲所说的“You cannot have this.” “This is Christmas, not an Italian wedding.” 27. What do the two kids’ Christmas wish lists reflect? A. Buying kids Christmas gifts is necessary. B. Kids and adults are becoming materialistic. C. Christmas commercial atmosphere is strong. D. The times can influence consumer attitudes. 27. 答案:D 命题立意:推理判断题 答案解析:根据最后一段you can’t help but notice how much our society has changed! 12 C In Australia, like many places around the world, about 95% of the people use Google when they search the Internet for new and recently changed web pages. Because so many people turn to Google’s site first before ever going to a news website, news is a big money-maker for the company. Australia is considering a bill that will charge Google for showing links to Australian news websites which are upset that Google is making money by showing links to articles on their own sites. In recent years, as large technology companies have gotten richer, many news sites have lost money. One way Google makes money is by showing ads on these search pages. Many people were shocked at the idea. That’s because the Internet is built on links. Since the Internet began, links have always been free. When it comes to copyright(版权), it’s against the law to use someone else’s articles or pictures without their permission. But it has always been legal for anyone, including big companies, to link to any other webpage on the Internet, without paying anything. Tim Berners-Lee is the man who developed the ideas that led to the Internet. He says Australia’s bill ruins the free linking that is so important to the Internet. He thinks the bill should be rewritten. Google agrees. The company says it wants to work out an agreement that’s fairer to Australian news sites, but that it can’t pay for links. Google points out that it has about 450 agreements in different parts of the world where it pays for the right to show the results of its searches. Google says if the bill isn’t changed, it will have to stop its work in Australia. Many people worry that once some groups are forced to pay for links in one part of the world, other governments will create similar laws. They’re concerned that in the end, the Internet will be less free, open, and useful for everyone. 28. What will the bill make Google do to Australian news websites? A. Provide web pages for them. B. Reduce its ads on them. C. Share its business with them. D. Pay for its links to them. 28. 答案:D 命题立意:细节理解题 答案解析:根据第二段“Australia is considering a bill that will charge Google for showing links to Australian news websites…” 29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The copyright law’s challenges. B. The different responses to the bill. C. The Internet copyright protection. D. The history of Internet links. 29. 12 30. What does the underlined part “its work” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Signing the bill with others. B. Offering a fairer agreement. C. Showing its search results. D. Printing out the news sites. 30. 31. In which section of a newspaper does this text appear most probably? A. Technology. B. Business. C. Lifestyle. D. Culture. 31. 12 D In a variation(变体)of a classic experiment, the surprising result shows how smart roosters are. The mark test is a way to test whether an animal can recognize itself. A mark is put on an animal, usually in a spot that can only be seen with a mirror. Then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror. If it seems to pay attention to the mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself. But scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently ran the mark test on roosters. They put a pinkish triangle on the chest of the roosters. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to discern the mark. When there’s danger—like a hawk(鹰)flying above—roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them. The scientists decided to use the shadow of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone. The scientists ran several tests by making a hawk shadow appear above the bird and watching how it reacted. It called out when it was near another rooster, but remained quiet when it was alone. When a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror, it wasn’t fooled into thinking there was another rooster. It remained silent despite the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror. The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters, which suggests that the mark test may not be competent for the test of whether an animal can recognize itself. The scientists hope their results will encourage other scientists to look for better ways of testing self-recognition in animals. It may turn out that some kinds of animals are more intelligent than people thought. 32. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Notice. B. Believe. C. Welcome. D. Remember. 32. 答案:A 命题立意:词义猜测题 答案解析:根据该词前文scientists believe the animal has recognized itself. 33. What can be inferred about the rooster from paragraph 4? A. It recognizes the presence of other roosters visually. B. It isn’t accustomed to participating in the test alone. C. It makes warning calls when a hawk shadow appears. D. It sometimes recognizes his companions nearby him. 33. It remained silent despite the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror. 12 34. How do the scientists find the mark test after the new research on roosters? A. Traditional. B. Successful. C. Unnecessary. D. Inaccurate. 34. The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters, which suggests that the mark test may not be competent for the test of whether an animal can recognize itself. 35. What’s the best title for the text? A. Scientists Test Roosters’ Reflections Successfully B. Do Roosters Usually Protect themselves Actively? C. Can Roosters Recognize Themselves in a Mirror? D. Roosters React Differently When Faced with Danger 35. Dutch airline KLM has started a program asking people to “Fly Responsibly”. The airline is asking its customers to think about their choices before they buy a plane ticket and suggesting that travelers ask themselves questions, such as whether they could take a train instead. 36 But as people worry more and more about the climate crisis(危机), airlines are working hard to make sure their businesses can keep going. About 3% of the world’s greenhouse gases come from airline travel. That number is likely to go up—the number of people traveling by plane has been growing steadily for years, and is expected to keep increasing. 37 The US Travel Association says that only about 20% of the airline flights taken in 2019 were for work. The other 80% were for fun. Airlines don’t have much choice in how they move people around. Actually, jet fuel is highly polluting. 38 Airlines like KLM and others have experimented with fuel made from plants, but this still pollutes and can cause other environmental problems as well. 39 Some people think that KLM’s program isn’t serious. They think the program is really just a way to try to make it look good at a time when people are worried about airline pollution. 40 The airline recently announced that it is working on a new plane design called a “Flying-V” which can hold lots of passengers, but will use 20% less fuel. The airline has also developed a program called CO2Zero by giving some money to a project that helps fight the climate crisis, such as a tree-planting program. A. That’s an unusual step for an airline. B. Airlines make money by selling plane tickets. C. There’re different opinions about KLM’s program. D. But so far, there has been no easy way to replace it. E. But some think there are some signs that KLM is serious. F. Now people are looking for ways to cut down on pollution. G. For many people, taking planes is a choice, not something they must do. 12 【篇章大意】本文属于描述类说明文。 When I was in the 8th grade in Ohio, Helen, riding the same school bus as I did, had a terrible accident.
