Music is the universal language of mankind. 1.I like the music which sounds good for me, no matter what style of music it is. 2.Learning a musical instrument will help you develop concentration, patience and perseverance. 3.There is clear evidence that children who take music lessons develop a better memory compared with children who have no musical training. 4.Nowadays, both traditional and modern music are enjoyed by people in China. 5.Learning music is meaningful, which will not only relax ourselves but also enrich our daily life. 6.Nothing is worth living for without music. 7.Music is a kind of language; it can exactly reflect the individual and the mental quality of the people. 8.They performed so well that those who were watching burst into cheers. 9.She really impressed me a lot for I had never heard a more beautiful voice. 10.Moreover, listening to some soft music does relax your mood and give you a new start. How music takes us back to our past It's happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported to a time in our past. But what is it that makes music so effective at doing this? There are a few things that link tunes with our memories. Paul Donoghue, writing for ABC News, reminds us that the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable. And Kelly Jakubowski, an assistant professor in music psychology, adds that music and singing are often part of many important life events and rituals, and that it is also very effective in grabbing our attention. These things combined mean that music and these life events are likely to be encoded together in our memories. Music itself is easy to remember. Tiffany Jenkins, writing for BBC Culture, tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through song. The rhythm, rhyme, melody and alliteration in lyrics all serve as memory aids. She goes on to say that pop music especially can be associated with a particular moment in time. As Shahram Heshmat, writing in Psychology Today highlights, we often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. Familiarity is important. Jakubowski, tells us that the more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is at bringing back memories. This applies to music more than other cultural products because we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than watch a film or a TV programme in the same way. Heshmat points out that our musical preferences usually form during our teens, and this corresponds with what many experts call the 'reminiscence bump', where we make our strongest memories between the ages of 10 and 30. It's clear that our memories and music are closely linked – to the point that music is being used to help dementia sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 song 歌,歌曲 come on the radio 在广播中播放 tune 旋律,曲子 music psychology 音乐心理学 singing 歌唱 through song 以歌曲的形式 rhythm 节奏,韵律 rhyme 押韵 melody 旋律,曲调 alliteration 头韵 lyrics 歌词 pop music 流行音乐 piece of music 一段音乐 background music 背景音乐 cultural product 文化产品 musical preferences 音乐偏好 【知识拓展】 最近的研究开始揭示为什么音乐似乎是唤起记忆的好线索。 【词汇延伸】 on the radio在收音机里广播中 an assistant professor助理教授副教授助教授 life events生活事件,人生大事 综合实战演练 (一) (2024·全国高考甲卷D 篇)“I didn’t like the ending,” I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of undergraduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature. I had just finished reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending. Prof. Gracie, with all his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not. He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn’t have a traditionally positive outcome. Of course, I would have preferred a different ending for Tom and Maggie Tulliver, but the ending they got did make the most sense for them. This was an aha moment for me, and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on, if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy, I’d pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I couldn’t guess, I’d pick up a mystery One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fiction. Choosing what to read became easier. But writing the end — that’s hard. It’s hard for writers because endings carry so much weight with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that's unpredictable, but doesn’t seem to come from nowhere, one that fits what’s right for the characters. That’s why this issue (期) of Writer’s Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best ending for whatever kind of writing you’re doing. If it’s short stories, Peter Mountford breaks down six techniques you can try to see which one helps you stick the landing. Elizabeth Sims analyzes the final chapters of five great novels to see what key points they include and how you can adapt them for your work. This issue won’t tell you what your ending should be — that’s up to you and the story you’re telling — but it might provide what you need to get there. 1.Why did the author go to Prof. Gracie? A.To discuss a novel. B.To submit a book report. C.To argue for a writer. D.To ask for a reading list. 2.What did the author realize after seeing Gracie? A.Writing is a matter of personal preferences. B.Readers are often carried away by character. C.Each type of literature has its unique end. D.A story which begins well will end well. 3.What is expected of a good ending? A.It satisfies readers’ taste. B.It fits with the story development. C.It is usually positive. D.It is open for imagination. 4.Why does the author mention Peter Mountford and Elizabeth Sims? A.To give examples of great novelists. B.To stress the theme of this issue. C.To encourage writing for the magazine. D.To recommend their new books. After Matthew Perry’s death at 54, a Wednesday evening memorial at a cafe in Shenzhen was packed with people and floral (鲜花的) arrangements as the TV mounted in the corner played an episode of Friends. Fans in China are mourning the loss of the star, who felt less like a distant celebrity and more like an old friend. “There were more people who showed up than we expected,” said cafe manager Nie Yanxia. “People shared their own memories about the character Chandler and Friends and many teared up.” “I remember the first time I saw Friends,” said 24-year-old Zhuo Min, who was from Nanjing. “I was shocked to find that people could be so friendly and funny. (四) (23-24高二下·山东济南·期末)Researches show that 43,000 years ago our ancestors were making music, The fact that music has been with us for so long explains why it affects us both mentally and physically. Tears can uncontrollably well up even in the most hardened eyes when Bruce Springsteen sings The River. It’s hard not to nod your head with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’I Love Rock 'N’ Roll. And you might not be human if you don’t feel an urge to dance while listening to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off. We have evolved (进化) to feel music. There’s plentiful evidence that humans really feel music, but are the feelings universal? If humans from different cultures listen to the same songs, will they respond in the same way? That’s what a team of Chinese and Finnish researchers wanted to find out. In a recent experiment, they presented nearly 2,000 participants from the United Kingdom the United States, and China with different songs and asked them to describe where they felt the music in their bodies, For this, the researchers gave each subject blank outlines of a human and asked them to color the regions where they felt changing activity in their bodies. The researchers found that all the participants responded to the songs in nearly the same way. “Across both cultures, happy and danceable songs activated the arms, legs, and the head, In contrast, sad, gentle, and scary songs activated mainly the chest and head regions,” the researchers described.“The results suggest similar bodily feelings of musical emotions across distant cultures.”Furthermore, the results show that humans feel music in the same way regardless of language and familiarity. Participants from one culture were not very familiar with others’songs. Instead, their bodies were responding to specific acoustic (听觉的) clues. However, the team note that their experiment only analyzed two cultures, meaning it’s possible that people living in a faraway part of the world would react to music very differently, which will be the highlight of their further study. 13.What do the songs mentioned in Paragraph l feature? A.Danceable beats. B.Traditional styles. C.Emotional impact. D.Confusing content. 14.What do the Chinese and Finnish researchers aim to do? A.Understand the history of music. B.Explore people’s feeling for music. C.Compare cultural differences in songs. D.Study songs’ effect on physical health. 15.What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A.All types of music activate the legs B.Humans respond similarly to music. C.Familiar songs inspire more feelings. D.People learn language through music. 16.What will the team do in the future? A.Create new music types. B.Observe human behavior. C.Put the discoveries to use. D.Expand the participant range. Unless you start when you’re four or five, it’s pretty much a hopeless case, you know.” I was fifteen. For years, I knew that I wanted to start taking singing lessons. I brought it up to my mom many times, but my wish was put off endlessly. I had been waiting for so long and was starting to give up hope. After all, my grandma believed me to be completely talentless. As I started high school, I finally took private singing lessons. Then the voice of doubt kept gradually weakening in my mind. So I made several requests to the choir leader, but I was never accepted. His refusal to my course requests doubled the voice of doubt in me, convincing me that most adults around me agreed with my grandma. My senior year burnt out, I was tired of letting others make decisions for me. So I emailed my adviser. He gave some advice and scheduled a meeting for me. This meeting was my first face-to-face request to be put into choir. “Are you sure you want to quit from academic group to fit choir into your schedule? I’m not sure that it’s the best decision now.” “I’ve wanted to join choir for years now.” That day, I got the opportunity to be interviewed for the school choir. 根据第一段““I didn’t like the ending,” I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of undergraduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature. I had just finished reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending. Prof. Gracie, with all his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not.( “我不喜欢这个结局,”我对我最喜欢的大学教授说。 故选A项。 2. 根据第二段“This was an aha moment for me, and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on, if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy, I’d pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I couldn’t guess, I’d pick up a mystery One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fiction. 根据第三段“But writing the end—that’s hard. It’s hard for writers because endings carry so much weight with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that’s unpredictable, but doesn’t seem to come from nowhere, one that fits what’s right for the characters.(但是写出结局——那很难。 根据倒数第二段“That’s why this issue (期) of Writer’s Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best ending for whatever kind of writing you’re doing. Music training not only provides people with the ability to appreciate and create music, but it also offers many benefits that extend beyond the area of melody(旋律). 17 . Improving cognitive (认知的) abilities Music training has been proven to improve cognitive abilities in various ways. Learning to play an instrument involves reading sheet music and memorizing melodies. 18 . Researchers have also found that music training can boost some skills, which are crucial for mathematics and engineering. Expressing emotions 19 . It allows people to express their emotions and connect with others. Music training provides a platform for self-expression, enabling individuals to channel their thoughts and emotions creatively. Learning to play an instrument or sing can be a cathartic(宣泄感情的) experience, providing an emotional outlet that words alone cannot achieve. 20 Learning music requires long-time practice, which needs a lot of attention and effort. Music training teaches individuals the value of hard work, determination and devotion. Through consistent practice, people have the ability to focus for a long time, a skill that goes beyond music and can be applied to academic and professional pursuits. The interviewer was a serious, old man. I worried he would hold the same opinion as my grandma. I stood in the vast band room, blinded by the bright lighting. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After I finished singing, the interviewer said, “You are in. Although I stood above the interviewer, only his desk separating us, I felt so nervous. In my head, I shouted, “Calm down! You can make it.” Then I started to sing. Though a little trembling, my voice obviously caught the old man’s attention, which made me a little comfortable in my music. At the same time, I recalled the advice from my adviser and it gave me more confidence. The notes transported me beyond the doubts to the interviewer. After I finished singing, the interviewer said. “You are in. I’ll see you Monday then!” After a thank-you, I left the room, excited and overwhelmed with emotions. I couldn’t believe I had finally made it. The journey had been tough, filled with doubt and setbacks, but it taught me perseverance and determination. The advice from my adviser and my tireless practice had paid off. I felt proud of myself for not giving up, and I looked forward to the new opportunities that lay ahead. 词汇激活 行为类 ①吸引注意力:catch the attention/draw the attention ②离开房间:left the room/exited the room ③放弃:give up/quit 情绪类 ①紧张的:nervous/anxious ②激动的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] Though a little trembling, my voice obviously caught the old man’s attention, which made me a little comfortable in my music.(使用了which引导的非限制性定语从句,先行词为前面句子表达的内容) [高分句型2] The journey had been tough, filled with doubt and setbacks, but it taught me perseverance and determination.(使用了过去分词短语作状语) 思维素养提升 Task 1写作项目——Write a speech 本单元的写作任务是“写一篇以音乐为主题的演讲稿”,写作时要鲜明完整地发表自己的见解和主张。
