Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.
Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.
There’s a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.
Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!
Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

C. The author has got another new job.
D. The author feels much better now.

A new device could save lives by sounding an alarm when children or pets are left alone in vehicles (车辆).
Developed by researchers at the University of Waterloo, the device uses radar technology and artificial intelligence(AI)to detect unattended children or animals with 100% accuracy.
Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the device is designed to be attached to a vehicle’s rear-view mirror (后视镜). It sends out radar signals that are reflected back by people, animals and objects in the vehicle. Built-in Al then analyzes the reflected signals.
“It solves a serious problem” said George Shaker, an engineering professor at Waterloo. “The device is so affordable that it could become standard equipment in all vehicles.”
Analysis by the device determines the number of people and their location in a vehicle. That information could be used to set rates (费用) for ride-sharing services, or to qualify vehicles for car-pool lanes (共乘车道).
In primary purpose however, is to detect when a child or a pet has been left behind by accident, a situation that can result in serous harm or death in extremely hot or cold weather. In such cases, the system would prevent vehicle doors from locking and sound an alarm to remind the driver, passengers and other people in the area that there is a problem.
“Unlike cameras, this device preserves privacy and it doesn’t have any blind spots because radar can get through seats to determine if there is a child in a rear-facing car seat,” said Shaker.
Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the device can recognize differences between living beings and inanimate (无生命的) objects by detecting breathing movements.
Researchers are now exploring the use to watch the signs of drivers for distraction, illnesses or other issues.
8. Why has the new device been developed?
A. Mainly to qualify vehicles for car-pool lanes.
B. Mainly to set rates for ride-sharing services.
C. Mainly to see if there is any dangerous object inside a vehicle.
D. Mainly to help prevent children or pets from being left behind in vehicles.
9. How will the device work to warn a driver?
A. By sending signals to a driver’s phone. B. By locking a vehicle door.
C. By sounding an alarm. D. By giving out a red light.
10. Which of the following is NOT one of the advantages of this device?
A. It can protect privacy. B. It can help people drive much faster.
C. Its price is reasonable. D. Its size is rather small.
11. What is the difference between cameras and the new device according to Shaker’s opinion?
A. The radar of the device can get through seats.
B. The radar of the device can take clearer photos.
C The device can send a weak voice in a vehicle to a driver.
D. The device can recognize living beings rather than inanimate objects.
D
Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to success. Competitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork. People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their life, and sports can help them improve that skill. Taking part in sports can help develop a positive attitude towards life, which will help in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” (剥夺) kids of their childhood, but offers special opportunities. Athletes can get success to live their dream life by playing sports. Even though sports are time-consuming, they offer distinctive opportunities.
In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.
12. Why is the formal athlete mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show a reason. B. To give an example.
C. To list a background. D. To draw out a new point.
13. What is the most participants’ attitude to sports?
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
14. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Common. B. Unfair. C. Special. D. Frequent.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The ways to play sports.
B. The reasons for adults’ playing sports.
C. The problems of kids’ playing sports.
D. The benefits of kids’ playing sports.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.

But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

6. After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him .
A. not to work any longer
B. to take a long vacation abroad
C. to stop smoking and take exercise
D. not to eat out any more
7. What can we learn about the author?

A new device could save lives by sounding an alarm when children or pets are left alone in vehicles (车辆).
Developed by researchers at the University of Waterloo, the device uses radar technology and artificial intelligence(AI)to detect unattended children or animals with 100% accuracy.
Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the device is designed to be attached to a vehicle’s rear-view mirror (后视镜). It sends out radar signals that are reflected back by people, animals and objects in the vehicle. Built-in Al then analyzes the reflected signals.
“It solves a serious problem,” said George Shaker, an engineering professor at Waterloo.
Small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the device can recognize differences between living beings and inanimate (无生命) objects by detecting breathing movements.
C. The device can send a weak voice in a vehicle to a driver.
D. The device can recognize living beings rather than inanimate objects.

B 13. A 14. C 15. D

However, the time spent is not “robbing” (剥夺) kids of their childhood, but offers special opportunities.(另一方面,有些人可能会认为竞技体育对年幼的孩子不好,因为它们太耗时了。
根据第一段“Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to success.
故填has been built。
故填that或which。
故填The。
make efforts to do为固定短语,表示“努力做某事”,故填to speed。
be lose to为固定短语,表示“接近”,此处to为介词。故填to。
故填it。

On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“You don’t look happy, Marc. What’s wrong?” she said. Explaining what had happened, especially the bet between him and Huck, he told Lily his decision. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”
选择:choose/make a choice/make an option
