When a Houston dad found out his eightyearold son was being bullied (欺负),he didn't get mad at the classmate who teased him. Instead,he talked with the socalled bully and realized that the boy was struggling, too.
Aubrey Fontenot's son,Jordan, told him a boy named Tamarion was teasing him. Fontenot decided to sit down with his son and Tamarion to understand what was going on,and something unexpected happened.
Tamarion told Fontenot he was being teased at school, too. “I asked,‘By who? You are big. You are huge. Who is teasing you?’” the father said. “He said,‘Just all the other kids, man. They are making fun of me.’” Fontenot learned that Tamarion was getting teased for his clothes and shoes—his clothes and shoes were old and dirty. Fontenot then spoke to the boy's mother. “She kind of confirmed it,” Fontenot said. “And she said,‘That's the kind of situation.’”
He felt sympathetic to the young boy and wanted to help. So he asked Tamarion's mom if he could take her son to do some shopping.
Fontenot posted videos of their trip to the mall on social media and they went viral. Tamarion eventually smiled, and then the two were laughing and singing together on their shopping trip. Just as if he were taking his own son to do some shopping,Fontenot got Tamarion new clothes and shoes, and shared words of wisdom with him.
Then, the dad united the two boys. He said it was awkward at first—just a day earlier, they didn't get along well at school. But the two classmates started playing sports games together and soon became friends.
It was not just about the clothes and shoes. Tamarion gained a friend in Jordan, and a mentor in his dad. Fontenot said he was also bullied when he was a child,so he knew it was important to listen to Tamarion's story. He chose kindness instead of anger and brought the two boys together. “I wouldn't say that was the goal, but that was the reward,” Fontenot said.

Everywhere we go there are always people who always criticize, who ruin your mood over trivial issues, who are immature, acting as if they know everything. However, they don't know they're your problem. How could you handle them?
First, accept that these people do exist. They're the “impossible” people who think there's nothing wrong with them and won't listen to you.Your opinion definitely would not matter to them.So directly informing them that they are your problem will be a problem. It does not help your relationship with them but instead will make it even more complicated to reach them.Treat them specially because it's a special situation. No reasonable explanation will be entertained.
Recognize that you can't change them.So change yourself.Change the way you perceive them or improve your tactic. Then eventually you could have a peaceful conversation.Understanding where they are originating from is one of the ways to realize their attitude to being difficult.
Be relaxed when you are in a conflict with them.It will help you not to react angrily.Always stay positive and see the good side of the situation. If you give in to your anger, the impossible person will grab that opportunity and forever keep in mind everything you said while angry. It'll be taken against you and won't be forgotten.
Get involved in their situation. After understanding their being and attitude, you may feel pity and very soon tolerate them. However, never share your personal life just because you think they're not that bad.Do not assume too much. They will not change so fast. You cannot go ahead and tell them what you are currently experiencing. If you are not friends, it would not be wise to share.Focus on handling them first.
Live a life of example. There's no other better way to manage conflicts than do the right thing.Stay positive and you'll attract positivity in your life.If they cannot respect you, respect them anyway. If they cannot show patience, live a life of tolerance.
8.In order not to be others' problem, what should you try to do?

B.Get on well with others.
C.Help others when they are in need.
D.Communicate peacefully with others.
故选A。
9.Why can't you be angry with the impossible people?
A.Because there is no need to show anger.
B.Because showing anger solves no problem.
C.Because being angry shows your rudeness.
D.Because your anger may result in bad effect.
10.You can deal with the impossible people by .
A.talking to them directly
B.changing them patiently

There's a childlike joy that comes with ordering something online. We sit refreshing the U. S. Postal Service or FedEx pages to see when our items will arrive and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious. But why?
According to a psychotherapist Owen O'Kane,it's anticipatory(预期的) pleasure that something positive and good is going to happen when we get this parcel. When our package finally arrives, many of us are satisfied. But that initial excitement has probably waned because our obsession with our parcel represents much more than the item we purchased. “What we're talking about here is hope and having something to look forward to,but not the item itself,” O'Kane explains.
Anticipating good things is a formula that has fueled many helpful remarks through the years: Tomorrow is another day. However, anticipation isn't always a good thing. In September, people went into a frenzy when it was announced that their mail delivery would become permanently slower. And now, many are worried about their items. This phenomenon is called preparcel anxiety. A delayed package may seem insignificant to some. But for others, getting your hopes up only for them to be thwarted(阻挠) is annoying and anxietyprovoking. O'Kane says these reactions are telling about more deeprooted internal issues in our lives that go beyond a delayed package. “Anxiety is intolerance to uncertainty. So it's really symbolic about something bigger, about that need to control and needing everything to be perfect.”
It's important to practice selfcare and treat ourselves with occasional gifts. However,O'Kane cautions comfort shopping is only a temporary fix. He adds many people often seek external solutions as a way of feeling better quickly, whereas a healthier longterm coping mechanism is to look inward and appreciate our life with “mindfulness, gratitude and savoring”.“We will find placing an order and receiving an item is stimulating on some level, but it is the most passive way to live. Challenge ourselves to take action in our life instead of waiting for it to arrive.”
So the next time we feel the urge to order and track something online, consider why.
12.What does the underlined word “waned” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Decreased. B.Enforced.
C.Refueled. D.Overwhelmed.
根据第二段第二句“When our package finally arrives, many of us are satisfied.”及画线词后句“because our obsession with our parcel represents much more than the item we purchased”可知,我们等待包裹到来时是满怀期待与兴奋的。 故选A。
13.Why are some people angry about a delayed package according to O'Kane?
A.They are intolerant of waiting.
B.They are uncertain of delivery.
C.They want to stay in control.
D.They have internal issues in life.
根据第三段的最后两句“Anxiety is intolerance to uncertainty. So it's really symbolic about something bigger, about that need to control and needing everything to be perfect.(焦虑是对不确定性的零容忍。所以它真正象征的是更大的东西,即对控制的需要,对一切都变得完美的需要。)”可知,有些人为包裹延迟而生气的原因在于他们想要掌控要发生的事情。故选C。
14.According to paragraph 4,which of the following statements does O'Kane agree with?
A.We can seek external solutions to make us feel better.
B.Online purchases can solve our problems permanently.
C.We should find satisfaction and peace with what we have.
D.Online shopping is a positive way to distract us from sadness.
根据第四段的第三句中的“...whereas a healthier longterm coping mechanism is to look inward and appreciate our life with ‘mindfulness, gratitude and savoring.’(……而更健康的长期应对机制是向内看,以‘专注、感激和品味’来欣赏我们的生活)”可知,我们应该对我们所拥有的感到满足与平和。故选C。
15.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To weigh up the pros and cons of online purchases.
B.To persuade us not to purchase online in the long run.
C.To analyze psychological happiness of online purchases.
D.To explain why we are so obsessed with online purchases.

(2023·新课标Ⅰ卷)When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a halfdozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I still remember it was a Monday morning in spring, when my teacher called me to his office, telling me that I had taken first place in the writing contest, and that I was the only winner whose native language wasn't English. Dominated by an overwhelming sense of excitement and pride at his words, I simply stood there dumbfounded, and my feet, as if rooted to the ground, couldn't move a bit. The next day, I was presented with my award and a certificate at the ceremony.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Giggling instantly with a broad smile spreading on his face,he told me that he was proud of my wonderful performance. It was at that moment that a warm surge of streams washed through my body, and the image of the horse emerged in my mind, encouraging me to continue writing. Indeed, I got a taste of victory and learned to pursue my dream with perseverance, whatever difficulties might arise.
