One day, he found his neighbour had candles. He had an idea. He dug a small hole on the wall, then the candle light could go into his room. From that day on, he read books every night until the light went out.
But soon there were no books for him to read. Then he went to a rich man’s house and worked for him without payment. The rich man asked: “Why don’t you want the money?” Kuang Heng said: “Because I only want to borrow your books.” The rich man agreed. Kuang Heng read the books one by one.

Grind An Iron Rod Into A Needle
There was a famous poet named Li Bai in the Tang Dynasty. When he was young, he didn't like studying and often skipped school.
One day, Li Bai didn't go to school again and wandered around the street. He said to himself: "It's so boring to study in the house all day in such good weather."
As he walked, Li Bai saw an old woman with white hair sitting at the door of a broken that ched house, grinding a thick iron stick.
Li Bai walked up and asked, "Granny, what are you doing?"
The old woman raised her head and smiled and replied, "I want to grind this iron rod into an embroidery needle."
Li Bai asked again, "Embroidery needle? Is it the embroidery needle used for sewing clothes?"
The old woman replied, "Yes, it is the embroidery needle used for sewing clothes."
Li Bai asked puzzledly, "But the iron rod is so thick, when can it be ground into a thin embroidery needle?"
The old woman asked Li Bai in return, "As long as I work harder than others, why can't the iron rod be ground into an embroidery needle?"
Li Bai felt ashamed after hearing what the old woman said.
So he never skipped school again, studied very hard every day, and finally became a great poet who will be remembered for thousands of years.
This is what people often say: As long as you work hard, you can grind an iron rod into a needle.

On June 4, 2023, the famous Champs-Elysées in Paris was turned into a large outdoor classroom for a special event, with cars replaced by desks. The event, called “The Big Dictation(听写)”,was a chance for people to show off their listening and spelling skills in an unusual environment. Instead of single words, competitors need to write down several paragraphs or a whole text in the event.
The event was organized by a writer named Rachid Santaki, who came up with the idea of large groups of people taking part in dictations back in 2013.He thought it could help people get better at reading and writing.
Over 50,000 people asked to join in the event. In the end, around 5,000 people, aged 10 to 90, were chosen to take part. The event was divided into three parts and each part had a different theme. Just like in school, a large “blackboard" and a total of 1,779desks were set up for the event. Several famous people were there to play the part of the teacher, and read the dictation texts out loud.
Not everyone found it easy. Ten-year-old Samson thought the dictation was so quick that he couldn't finish it. Another young student agreed. "It was impossible!" he said. “The dictation was for adults.” Even most adults found it difficult, reporting that it caused “stress and worry”.
Marc-Antoine Jamet, a worker of the Champs-Elysées Committee, said the goal wasn't just to get all the words right but also to bring people together. Another goal was to break the record for the largest dictation event ever. But even if it didn't break the record, the event is likely to be remembered by the people of Paris for a long time.

Passage A
Here are some ways to help you learn English.
1.
Most people think a big problem of learning English is worrying. They worry that they won't say right things, so they don't talk at all. In fact, a good way to learn anything is to do it again and again. Learning English needs practice. Don't let your worry stop you from getting what you want.
2.
Put yourself in an English-speaking environment. Put English books around your room, listen to English music, watch English news, movies and TV programs and speak English with your friends. By doing these, you will learn faster and you will begin thinking in English.
3.
Although it sounds a little strange, it can work. When you are doing housework or taking a walk in the park, you can read words to yourself or ask yourself questions and answer them in English.
4.
Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, they are really helpful. By doing exercises and taking tests, you can really improve your English.
5.
If English is not a common language in your country, try to take a vacation to an English- speaking country, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. It will be interesting and can help you improve your English in a short time.
A. Surround yourself with English.
B. Do exercises and take tests.
C. Visit an English-speaking country.
D. Don't be afraid to speak English.
E. Talk to yourself.
F. It's never too late to learn.
Passage B
After months of study, you have some time to relax. So, why not 6. (read) a book?
Well, some people will say," Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and other media that offer a lot more colorful programs. Books are history!" 7. don't be fooled. There's still a lot to be said for reading.
One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful collection of 8. (word) and expressions, as long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me. It's far easier 9. (get) standard English from a book than from the TV or the Internet.
But an even 10. (important) point is that books give you something that modern media cannot. The webpage is always full of pictures 11. the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. Though "easy" may be welcome, 12. (unlucky) it's of little use for any long- time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there's still no substitute(替代品) for a book.
But perhaps the best reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself 13. (mean) that it's something you do by and 14. yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but while you are reading, you will find 15. once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. Reading can bring us pleasure.
Passage C
As we know, English is an important subject in middle school. Everyone knows that they must learn English well, but some people don't know how to be a good (learn). Here are, some tips that may help you with your English.
The (big) problem is people's own fear. They worry that they won't say things correctly or that they will look foolish(愚蠢的) they don't talk at all. Don't be of being laughed at. Only when we aren't afraid of making (mistake) can we learn English well.
The fastest way to learn anything is to do it again and again you get it right. Like anything else, learning English needs practice. Don't let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.
The best way (learn) English is to have a good environment.
Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English radios and English news, movies and programs. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The (much) English material you have around you, the faster you will learn it.
Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by (do) exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much progress you are making.
Passage E
There are many things you can do to improve your English. One of the best things, however, is to read, write and speak English as much as possible. The more you practice your English, the more likely you are to improve it.
Take a Class
Schools or other education organizations in many parts of the world have English classes. No matter where the class is offered, it is best if it is taught by a person whose first language is English. Some classes might focus on reading, writing or speaking, but others will teach students in all three areas.
Use English Daily
If you are living in an English-speaking country, you have many chances to improve your English. For example, if you have children who are learning English at school, you can improve your English by talking to them in English and helping them with their English homework.
One Word at a Time
If you want to improve your English vocabulary, it can be helpful to learn a few new words at a time. For example, you could learn one new word every few days and look for chances to use it in conversations. Another way is to learn two or three new words each week and spend the week trying to use them.

1. What were people asked to do in the special event?
A. Spell a few single words.
B. Finish a creative writing.
C. Write down what they hear.
D. Read out several paragraphs.
2. What can we know from the third paragraph?
A. People took active part in the event.
B. All of the competitors were grouped by age.
C. Famous teachers were invited to the event.
D. There was a theme for the special event.
3. What did adults and children think of the event?
A. They thought it was boring.
B. They thought it was challenging.
C. Adults found it easy, but children found it hard.
D. Adults found it worrying, but children found it enjoyable.
5. Where can we most probably read this text?
A. In a personal diary.
B. In a contest poster.
C. In an art magazine.
D. In a news report.
根据第一段最后一句中的“competitors need to write down several paragraphs or a whole text in the event"和第三段最后一句“Several famous people...read the dictation texts out loud.”可知,参赛者被要求写下他们所听到的几个段落或一篇完整的文章。
2.A推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Over 50,000 people asked to join in the event.”

English can also help us improve our communication skills. At present I can communicate with my classmates in English. I also like speeches. I won a prize in the speech contest last year. And I believe that I should be able to talk with others correctly when I go to a Western country. However, I have some problems with learning English. I can't use the grammar rules correctly. Sometimes I can't express myself clearly in writing. I often find it hard to remember more difficult words. At last, I have some suggestions for English teaching as well. I think teachers should communicate with us in English when they are in class.
