Jealousy, which is also called the green-eyed monster, is a very common problem in our daily life. It’s everywhere. For example, if someone does better than you, you will get annoyed (恼怒的) because you want to be No.1. We may become jealous of a best friend’s top marks in an exam, or of the girl in art class who is praised by the teacher all the time. We get annoyed because these good things are happening to someone else but not to us.
It’s bad to feel jealous. We should be pleased with what we do have instead of what we don’t have. But we still wish we had the money of this person and the talent of that person. Instead of sharing their happiness, we just feel jealous and unhappy with ourselves. And, too often, these feelings are expressed by speaking ill of the people we envy (忌妒).
________. We see that other people have styles and talents different from our own. By comparing ourselves with others, we can know what we are short of or what we are poor at. And we can turn this comparison, the envy of others, into a kind of power to help us get better.
Therefore, being a bit jealous of others lets us know what we are like and what we want to be like. In this way we can have a better understanding of ourselves, and it can push us to become what we really want to be.
14.According to the first paragraph, why do you get annoyed?
A.Because the teacher dislikes others.
B.Because others do something better than you.

15.From the passage we can know if you have good marks in the exam, a jealous person may ________.
A.make friends with you B.praise you
C.speak ill of you D.tell his or her parents
16.Which of the following can be put at ________?
A.Being jealous gets in our way of study
B.Don’t be controlled by jealousy
C.Besides, feeling jealous drives everybody mad
D.However, being jealous can also be helpful in some way
17.What should be the right attitude (态度) towards jealousy?
A.It’s totally a bad thing, and we should stay away from it.
B.It helps us to become successful.
C.It’s a kind of compliment (恭维) to others.
D.A little bit of it pushes us to become what we really want to be.

Reading people’s mind seems to be a supernatural power that can only be seen in movies. But scientists have made it possible to translate people’s brain waves!
Researchers at the University of California developed a new device (设备). It can turn brain waves into words on a screen in front of the users. In the study, they tested it on a disabled man. “To our knowledge, this is the first successful show of direct decoding (解码) of full words from the brain of someone who is disabled and cannot speak,” said Edward Chang, one of the researchers of the study. Each year, many people lose the ability to speak because of accidents or diseases. With up to 93 percent of accuracy, the new device shows “strong promise” to let these people fully communicate in the future.
One problem with such mind-reading machines, however, is that electrodes (电板) are needed to be put into people’s brains. ▲ . But scientists from another university have taken steps to change this. They tried to translate people’s thoughts without even touching their heads. The new technology is called FMRI. It’s a safer way of “reading” brain activity. Active brain cells have more oxygen. Scientists can translate brain activity with the help of it.
The team asked the people who took part in the study to listen to 16 hours of radio shows while their brains were scanned. Then they used a computer algorithm (算法) to create a story based on the FMRI recording. It matched the radio shows pretty well. In other tests, the algorithm could basically explain the story of a silent movie that people watched. It could even retell a story that people imagined in their heads. Although it’s not a word-for-word translation, the technology provides many possibilities.
18.The underlined word “they” refers to ______.
A.brain waves B.the users C.the researchers D.the devices
19.Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A.It’s not convenient and has health risks
B.It’s expensive and people can’t buy it in many places
C.It can read people’s mind faster
D.It’s smaller in size and hard to put in people’s brain
20.What is the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
21.What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show us that technologies can read your mind now.
B.To suggest that all disabled people should do more research.
C.To tell us that translation technology still needs time to develop.
D.To let people know about a new computer algorithm.

My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York. I’ve been crazy about Chinese history and culture. So I learned Putonghua in the university and I am good at speaking it.
Three years ago, I came to China. I am an English teacher in a middle school in Suzhou, a city in East China. Now I get used to the life here except one thing — the language, Suzhou dialect (方言).
When I talk with older people, they prefer to speak Suzhou dialect. It is famous for its soft words, and is known as the “soft dialect”, which sounds very musical and pleasing. But it is quite different from Putonghua. Putonghua has only four tones (语调) while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect. Besides, the differences between Suzhou dialect and Putonghua go far beyond (超过) tones and pronunciations. There is rich information about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect. Apart from that, some pieces of slang (俗语) and expressions just don’t sound the same in Putonghua.
I made a lot of mistakes when communicating with Suzhou people here. However hard it is, I am already on the way to becoming a native (母语的) speaker, speaking like a local of Suzhou.

14.According to the first paragraph, why do you get annoyed?

B.Don’t be controlled by jealousy
C.Besides, feeling jealous drives everybody mad
D.However, being jealous can also be helpful in some way
17.What should be the right attitude (态度) towards jealousy?
A.It’s totally a bad thing, and we should stay away from it.

Ever since you were a baby, you have been growing. But your body usually grows very fast in some certain periods.
26 At that time, you were so small, but you grew so quickly. In fact, when you were born, your body had a programmed (设定好的) height and size it wanted to reach. If you look at the heights of your parents, aunts, uncles, siblings (兄弟姐妹) and grandparents, you can learn about how tall you might be when you’ve all grown up.
Around the ages of 8 to 13 in girls and 10 to 15 in boys, children grow more quickly. 27 And it is called adolescence (青春期). Often, you will see girls get taller than boys in late elementary school, and boys catch up and usually pass them in middle school and high school.
28 Your bones, your muscles, and your whole body have to get used to getting taller and bigger. You might feel clumsy (笨拙的); your voice might change, and you might feel different. All of these things are a natural part of growing up and becoming adults.
29 But boys will finish growing between the ages of 16 and 18. Some boys and girls finish growing at different times, because everyone is different.
It is very important to exercise enough, to eat properly, and to sleep enough when you are growing. Most children should be getting 10 to 12 hours of sleep per night. 30 Help your body grow by doing the right things.
A.Are you getting enough?
B.Then do you know why your body grows?
C.This is because boys and girls are growing up to be adults.

请认真阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。
54.Which country does Peter come from?
_______________________________________________________________________________
55.What makes it difficult for Peter to understand Suzhou dialect?
_______________________________________________________________________________
56.Do you think it’s important for foreigners to learn the local dialect? Why or why not?
_______________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
54. He’s from America.
55. Suzhou dialect has no less than seven tones.
56.Yes, I think so. Because learning the local dialect can help them avoid communication problems.
【分析】文章讲Peter虽然会讲普通话但因不懂方言而在沟通中犯了许多错误。
54.根据“My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York.”可知Peter来自接近纽约的小村庄,应是来自美国。故填He’s from America.
55.根据“Putonghua has only four tones while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect.”可知Peter难以理解苏州方言是因为普通话只有四个声调而苏州方言有不少于七个。故填Suzhou dialect has no less than seven tones.
56.主观发挥题,答案合理即可。学习当地方言对外国人来说很重要,因为学习当地方言可以帮助他们避免交流问题。 故填Yes, I think so. Because learning the local dialect can help them avoid communication problems.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Nowadays, it’s common for teenagers to have idols. However, I don’t think it is a good idea to give money to the fan club.
On the one hand, they don’t have the ability to make money on their own. On the other hand, they are too young to make right decisions. They don’t even know whether they are doing the right thing. In my opinion, teenagers should stop giving money to the fan club. It’s wonderful for them to choose to do some meaningful things to support their idols. For example, they can write letters to them to show their love and support.
As for me, I will manage to make a special video for my idol to show my love and what I wish him to do so that he can be a good example to all the teenage fans. In a word, we should learn to be independent and make right decisions.
