It isn't just people who get road rage. Robins (知更鸟) in the countryside become more aggressive (好斗的) when they hear the sound of traffic, according to a study. They are actually fiercely competitive creatures, whose calls and behaviors are part of a struggle for their living areas with their neighbors.
When a robin arrives uninvited in another bird's living areas, they sing special songs to protect themselves against attack from the competitor, and use behaviors including moving slowly from side to side and showing their red chest feathers, before closing in and even going on the attack.
Earlier studies had found that robins living in cities were more physically aggressive than their cousins in the countryside. The latest research suggests that noise pollution could play a part. “In normally quiet surroundings, we found that additional traffic noise led to rural robins becoming more physically aggressive,” said Dr Çaĝlar Akçay, who was the study's lead author.
Akçay and his team thought that the traffic noise was negatively influencing robins' natural communication through songs. “The long-term high level of noise that exists day and night in city areas, such as from traffic or construction equipment, may always harm the efficient transmission of acoustic signals (听觉信号) and this is likely to be the key reason why urban robins are typically more aggressive than rural birds,” he said.
A higher level of aggression was likely to make these birds' lives more difficult, Akçay suggested. One of his theories was that taking more action in response to a competitor could make them more easily attacked by natural enemies, especially when their attention was focused on the competitor.
11.Which of the following probably mean a robin is struggling for living areas?
A.Quick moves. B.Special calls.
C.Sweet songs. D.Beautiful dances.
12.Where do robins with a higher level of aggression usually live?
A.In a house. B.In a forest.

B.They can avoid the effect of noise by singing.
C.Their communication can be harmed by noise.
D.Their natures cause their fights with others.
14.What may make robins' lives more hard in Dr Akçay's view?
A.Keeping chatting with the competitors.
B.Fighting more with the competitors.
C.Not struggling for the living areas.
D.Being less focused on the competitors.

Phyllis and her friends graduated about a week ago. They all have different plans. Phyllis is moving to New York for medical school. Tina is staying in Los Angeles and working as a medical assistant. Lori is traveling in Europe. Ruby is teaching English in China. The four girls have been best friends since their first year of college. It was hard for all of them to be away from each other. However, they accepted that they were going to do what would be best for them.
Phyllis was more excited than sad. She has always wanted to go to New York. She loves the fast-paced lifestyle, the skyline, and the subway system. She is also looking forward to being around people who have the same goals as she does. Unlike Phyllis, Tina is taking a break from school. She wants to have a year of work experience before going to medical school. She is excited to take it easy. Lori is excited, too. She is going to travel by herself, and she is okay with that. She plans to visit England, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and more. Ruby is more nervous about moving. She has never been to China before and does not speak Chinese. She is excited for her job though. She loves teaching and seeing students' faces light up when they understand something.
Although the four of them will be apart, they promised to keep in contact with each other through video chat. They agreed that they would all talk at 8 pm on Fridays. They also agreed to meet up for big events, such as weddings and holidays.
15.Who plan to go abroad after graduation?
A.Phyllis and Tina. B.Tina and Lori.
C.Lori and Ruby. D.Ruby and Phyllis.
16.Why has Tina decided to work as a medical assistant?
A.To earn her living. B.To support her family.
C.To pay for her schooling. D.To get some work experience.
17.What's the common feeling of the four girls about graduation?
A.They are excited. B.They are relaxed.
C.They are nervous. D.They are regretful.
18.What can we infer about the four girls from the last paragraph?
A.They will chat every weekend.
B.They will keep up their friendship.
C.They will hardly gather except for their weddings.
D.They will soon study together again at a medical school.
三、语法填空(共10小题;每小题3分,满分30分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Finding resources online is no longer a problem. It's 19 (amaze) to see the resources we now have online for self-education. The possibilities are almost endless. You can learn just about anything online. Mention a subject and you will find enough materials to fill months or even years of learning.
Since there are more than enough resources out there, what limits (限制) you is your own 20 (curious). It is the fuel. The more you have it, the 21 (far) you will go. It's like someone 22 explores an open land without any border in sight. How far he/she goes doesn't depend on the size of the land 23 on the amount of the fuel he/she has.
While the resources are 24 (actual) unlimited, your time is not. So your ability to choose what to learn 25 (appear) more important. You should spend your limited time 26 the right subject and with the right depth. Not everything is worth your time, and for those that are worthwhile, each deserves different amounts of your time.
Learning is a lifelong process. We are lucky 27 (have) all these resources and opportunities online. Don't waste them; make 28 most of them instead.

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Rather than only trying to protect young people from bad effects of social media, parents and teachers might talk with them about online safety.
It's no secret that social media is having a bad influence on teenagers, especially girls. A study found that 59 percent of US teens have been bullied (欺凌) online. A 2016 University of Glasgow study found that greater social media use had something to do with worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and bad feelings. It is clear that there is a relationship between the rise of social media and the rising rates of anxiety and bad feelings among teens.
Social media can do a lot of good. Social media allow teens to broaden their social networks, which can be especially good for teens living in faraway areas and those with a disability. This connection can be extremely positive. Social media allow teens to know about new ideas, creativity and self-expression. They can simply be places to have fun or even spaces to find support and reach out for help. Not only teens, but everyone, can be exposed to (接触) positive role models, scientists and educators all over the world through social media.
It's during this time that teens get to explore who they are, mistakes and all. It is in adolescence that they begin to have abstract thoughts, define their sense of self and create a sense of innovation. Instead of restricting social media usage, we should be developing open conversations about it. Because it is not the Internet that is causing harm; it's the lack of education. Teens need to be taught about healthy boundaries (界限) when it comes to social media.
Let's talk to teens about how what we see on the Internet is not always the truth. Let's educate our teens on online safety. Teens want to be treated like adults, and we can provide them with a little bit of freedom by talking to them, not hiding things from them.
11.What can we learn about social media from the two studies in paragraph 2?
A.They only badly affect girls. B.They cause bad relationships.
C.They make teens feel anxious. D.They help teenagers fall asleep.
12.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Teens' learning environment.
B.Parents' attitude to the Internet.
C.The importance of new ideas.
D.The advantages of social media.
13.Which can replace the underlined word “restricting” in paragraph 4?
A.Stopping. B.Accepting. C.Protecting. D.Teaching.
14.What does the author suggest people do?
A.Protect teens from online bullying. B.Talk with teens honestly.
C.Hide the Internet from teens. D.Use social media less often.

Your mind is very powerful. Yet, if you're like most people, you probably spend very little time reflecting on the way you think. After all, who thinks about thinking? 15
If you hold wrong ideas about who you are and what you're able to do, you'll limit your potential. 16 So if you think you're a failure, you'll feel like a failure. Then, you'll act like a failure, which makes you believe that you must be a failure.
17 Someone will come in saying, “I'm just not good enough to advance in my job.” That opinion leads him/her to feel discouraged and causes him/her to put in less effort. That lack of effort prevents him/her from having better job performance.
Once you draw a conclusion (结论) about yourself, you're likely to do two things: look for something, such as facts or signs, which proves your belief to be true and consider anything that runs against your belief unimportant. Someone who develops the belief that he's a failure, for example, will view each mistake as a sign that he/she is not good enough. 18 Consider for a minute that it might not be your lack of talent or lack of skills that are holding you back. Instead, it might be your beliefs that keep you from performing best.
Creating a more positive thought can lead to better results. 19 But optimistic thoughts lead to productive act, which increases your chances of a successful outcome.
A.I see this happen all the time in my office.
B.When he/she does succeed, he/she will owe it to luck.
C.That's not to say positive thoughts have magical powers.
D.However, the way you think about yourself turns into your reality.
E.What you think directly influences how you feel and how you act.
F.If we make an effort on purpose, you can learn to think more positively.
G.Once that belief gets deeply rooted in his/her mind, he/she will suffer a lot.

C.In the countryside. D.In a noisy city.
13.What can we know about robins from paragraph 4?
A.They enjoy fighting with their neighbors.
