Unit 1 PEOPLE OF ACHIEVEMENT Explore the meaning of greatness (Listening and Speaking) 1、 Teaching Aims 1. To listen for general ideas and specific information and listen for reasons. 2. To learn how to give time to think. 3. To talk about the greatness and achievements. 2、 Teaching Procedures 1. Lead-in 1 Show students a video about the heroes in China. 2 Translate the poem into Chinese. Each age offers its own men of parts and they lead their unique wonders. 3 Questions: Can you tell other great people in modern China? Show some pictures and then introduce the topic. 2. Pre-listening Show the pictures in task 2 and ask students to tell who they are. 3. While-listening · Match the people with their achievements. Then listen to a conversation between Dr Wang, his daughter Wang Lin, and his daughter’s friend Anna, and check the answers. · Before listening, give some tips by helping students figure out the relationship between the 3 speakers and explain some key words and their usages. Then, play the tape. · Check the answers and show students some background information about the famous figures. · Listen to the conversation again. Who does each speaker admire? Tick in the table below. · Use the tape to check the answers together and stop when necessary. · Listen again and answer the questions. 1. Why dose Dr Wang say “Money isn't everything”? 2. What is the real reason Anna admires the famous people, and what examples does she give? 3. What kind of person do you think Wang Lin admires？Why？ · A listening strategy: Listen for reasons When people give their opinions or decisions on a matter, they often give reasons for them. Sometimes, the reason is introduced by words such as because or due to. At other times, the reason is given right after the opinion or decision, and the link can be inferred. 4. Post-listening 1 Show students the listening material and read it after the tape. 2 Group work: Brainstorm the names of some great people and write them in the table below. 3 Discuss what makes these people great. Try to use the following language fillers to give yourself time to think. 4 Use your discussion to draw conclusions about the meaning of greatness. The following expressions may help you.
