Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Jane Austen's romantic novel focuses on the Bennet family during the 19th century and the importance of marriage and social expectations. The author uses exaggerated characters to make fun of the society. Setting: Longbourn (a fictional town) in Hertfordshire The Harry Potter Series by J.K.Rowling It's highly unlikely that you've managed to avoid hearing of Harry Potter, even if you are a person who don't know magic. It is a fantastic series of novels which makes you believe in magic and that anything is possible. Setting:Hogwarts (fictional) The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark A teacher who uses her authority to influence the pupils at an allgirls school. Her teaching is unusual as the pupils can learn about love, beauty and unselfishness. Setting:Edinburgh How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn It is about a Welsh family and their life living among a mining community. It gives readers a really good representation of the struggles faced by those living in this sort of community. Usually, we spend six weeks filming for about three minutes of TV.What usually happens is that we're going to film one thing but the animal ends up doing something else.We stay in whatever basic accommodation is the closest, because we can't waste time on the way.So it's rare that we stay in a hotel.Patience is the key, then learning and listening. Of course you encounter animals that could hurt you. There was a moment on Planet Earth where a wolf approached me and we had to push it off with a camera.During filming for Seven Worlds we came across a beautiful but deadly snake, which casually came into our room.I took it up in a hat and put it back into the jungle.I still remember the chimps in Senegal jumped on a tree next to me and pushed it to the ground. He was like saying, “You can stay here, but if I wanted to crash you, I could.” When we film certain animals, like lions for example, we must be vigilant .We know they will attack other creatures for their territories, but there's something fascinating in the small creatures.I've always cared about these beautiful lives and the planet.I desperately want to preserve the creatures in the natural world. 4.Why did the author agree to work for BBC? A.He could work with David. B.He would travel abroad. C.He could study more animals. D.He would become famous. 根据第一段中的“When I was six, I was so desperate to be out in nature.I'd be transported through David's documentaries (纪录片) to all these amazing places.”以及第二段中的“Sir David himself came to film with me.” 5.Which of the following is the most important for the author's job according to the text? A.Enthusiasm. B.Listening. C.Patience. D.Observation. 根据第三段最后一句“Patience is the key, then learning and listening.” 6.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A.Clever avoidance keeps animals away. B.Filming in nature has potential danger. C.The author prefers strange experiences. D.Powerful. C Just like humans, birds also rely on sound to communicate. However, they do not have a “language” in the true sense of the word and instead produce a variety of sounds to convey different emotions. Often, birds recognize their mates or young by sound rather than sight.Hungry young birds use begging calls to let their mothers know it is feeding time.Alarm calls, flight calls and warning calls are other sounds made frequently by adults. A new study shows that songbirds rehearse (排演) their songs even in their sleep. The team used tiny recording devices to measure the activity of individual brain cells in four songbirds both when they were singing and when they were asleep. Many songbirds learn to sing by listening to adult birds of the same species. However, if separated from the adults, the young birds develop sounds which are hard to understand instead of normal song patterns.Researchers carried out an experiment in which a male bullfinch (灰雀) was raised by a female canary (金丝雀).The bullfinch soon learned the canary's song and when it was later mated to a female bullfinch, Mr Bullfinch taught his children the canary's songs. Last year, a British survey of London's songbirds showed that the city's birds are losing their tunes.Birds could hardly hear one another, over the traffic noise; as a result, instead of copying the sweet notes of the adults, young birds were copying the sounds they heard most often, namely car horns and beeping cellphones! 8.According to the passage, how do birds recognize their mates? A.By using their own words. B.By listening to their sounds. C.By looking at their appearances. D.By singing the same songs. 根据文章第二段第一句“Often, birds recognize their mates or young by sound rather than sight.(鸟类通常是通过声音而不是视觉来识别它们的配偶或幼鸟。)” B。 9.What does the story of Mr Bullfinch suggest? A.Young birds learn to sing from whom they live together with. B.Birds only learn how to sing from the same adult species. C.It's not easy for adult birds to teach young birds songs. D.A canary's song is more beautiful than a bullfinch's. A。 10.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Traffic noise makes young birds become deaf. B.Birds in the city can sing as sweetly as those in the wild. C.Birds in the city recognize their mates mainly by sight. D.Noise pollution causes much trouble for birds in the city. D。 11.What does the author mainly intend to tell the readers with the passage? A.To inform the readers how songbirds bring up their babies. B.To show the differences in songbirds' brain activities when they are awake and asleep. C.To persuade the readers to reduce the noise pollution and protect the birds. D.To explain to the readers how songbirds communicate with each other. D。 D As global temperatures rise, trees around the world are experiencing longer growing seasons, sometimes as much as three extra weeks a year. All that time helps trees grow faster. For the past 100 years, trees have been experiencing fast growth in mild areas from Maryland to Finland, to Central Europe, where the growth rate of some trees has even sped up by nearly 77% since 1870.Supposing wood were just as strong today, those gains would mean more wood for building, burning, and storing carbon captured from the atmosphere. But is wood really as dense (茂密的) as it used to be? Hans Pretzsch, a forest scientist at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and his colleagues wanted to find an answer. They carried out a study of the forests of Central Europe. They started with small pieces of experimental land in southern Germany, some of which have been continuously monitored since 1870.Pretzsch and his team took core samples (样品) from the trees — which included Norway spruce, sessile oak, European beech, and Scots pine — and analyzed the tree rings using a highfrequency probe. They found that in all four species, wood density had decreased by 8% to 12%.“We expected a trend of the wood density like this, but not such a strong and significant decrease,” Pretzsch says.Increasing temperatures, and the faster growth they spur, probably account for some of the drop.Another factor, Pretzsch says, is more nitrogen in the soil from agricultural fertilizer and vehicle exhaust.Previous studies have linked increased fertilizer use to decreased wood density.Above all, the study suggests that the higher temperatures — combined with pollution from car exhaust and farms — are making wood weaker, resulting in trees that break more easily and wood that is less durable. “I am getting worried,” says Richard Houghton, an ecologist at the Woods Hole Research Center in Falmouth, Massachusetts, who was not part of the new study. As the density of the samples dropped, so did their carbon content. That means forests may suffer more damage from storms and may be less efficient at soaking up (吸收) the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than scientists think, Houghton says. 12.What is the function of Paragraph 1? A.To prove an idea. B.To introduce the topic. C.To give an example. D.To describe a fact. 13.What does the study show? A.Farming slows trees' growth. B.More areas are covered with forests. C.Climate warming changes the quality of wood. D.Pollution leads to higher temperatures. 14.What does Richard Houghton mean? A.Great loss might be caused. B.Storm damage can be prevented. C.The size of forests might be increased. D.Less greenhouse gases can be sent out. 15.What is the best title for the passage? A.We Only Have One Earth B.Trees—Our Best Friends C.The Influence of Climate Change D.Trees Are Growing Faster, but Weaker 解析:D 标题归纳题。 The days start to warm up and daylight lasts longer. 16 You should, by now, be seeing spring arriving in your garden, with new growth on your trees and bushes. With the sun shining stronger, its warmth can be felt and the plants respond accordingly. 17 So you need to make sure that you remove them before they take hold.Treat where you can and dig up where you can't; remember that any treatments you do use keep your pets out of the garden for the correct amount of time.We wouldn't want them to get poor treatment! If you have trees to plant then make sure you give them enough compost (堆肥) or manure (粪肥), to ensure the take to their new homes. 18 If not, you can always head to your local garden centre to top up your supplies! And why not pick up more flowers while you're there for your hanging pots or window sills? 19 There are a variety of summerflowering bulbs that can also be grown in pots, hanging baskets and other containers, to brighten up a rock garden. In fact, if you plant your bulbs in a container that's a few sizes smaller than looks comfortable, it'll help them to burst into bloom. 20 So, what will you be planting out in the garden? I have a few bulbs to get ready to go into the ground, what's your favorite flower to plant at this time of year? A.It's a good idea to try different plants. B.If you only have small space, don't worry. C.If you are not well prepared, it doesn't matter. D.Sadly, the weeds are also beginning to come up. E.You know that means early flowers for indoors! F.If you are able to use your own homemade fertilizer, then do so. G.Therefore, it's time to get out in the garden and plant some plants. 16.解析:G 根据上文“The days start to warm up and daylight lasts longer.(白天开始变暖, 白天持续时间变长。)”和下文“You should, by now, be seeing spring arriving in your garden, with new growth on your trees and bushes.(现在, 你应该已经看到春天来到了你的花园, 你的树木和灌木都长出了新芽。)” 17.解析:D 根据下文“So you need to make sure that you remove them before they take hold.(所以你需要确保在它们生根之前把它们除掉。)” 18.解析:F 根据上文“If you have trees to plant then make sure you give them enough compost or manure, to ensure the take to their new homes.(如果你有树要种, 那么确保你给它们足够的堆肥或粪肥, 以确保它们适应新家。)” 20.解析:E 根据上文“In fact, if you plant your bulbs in a container that's a few sizes smaller than looks comfortable, it'll help them to burst into bloom.(事实上, 如果你把球茎植物放在一个比看起来舒服的小几个尺寸的容器里, 这将有助于它们开花。)” Life can take any turn at any time or movement. It is 21 .One truth about life is that we can't spend it alone to live the 22 . Suddenly, the quiet was shattered by Amy Jensen bursting in and letting the door slam.Isabel felt herself shrink.Amy, who had been a volunteer a bit longer than Isabel, walked around as if she were in charge of the place.“Hey, Isabel,” she barked, planting a hand on Isabel's shoulder.Isabel willed herself to remain still, though she would have loved to brush Amy's hand off. Just then, Isabel's mother rushed into the room with Mr.Garza, the custodian (管理员).“The hurricane is entering the Gulf,” she reported.“The Gulf Shore Preserve needs help to prepare for the storm.I've got to go down there. You should be okay up here, but I need you girls to help Mr.Garza get the storm shutters down in the aviary (鸟舍).Stay inside with Mr.Garza after that.” Isabel leaped to her feet, excited to have an opportunity to help the birds. Mr.Garza and the girls worked quickly and were soon back inside, listening to the wind batter and rattle the shutters. When Mr.Garza found an emergency weather report on the computer, a concerned expression crossed his face.“A storm is heading our way,” he announced.Amy's eyes widened in horror. “The aviary is to be flooded,” Isabel thought to herself. After several hours, Isabel's mom returned to the center. When she entered the office, she saw Isabel, who was drenched. She was concerned about her daughter.Mr.Garza told her what had happened. She was very moved. She was proud of her daughter's brave behavior. At this time, she believed that Isabel was very suitable to work with the animals. What she could do was not just help sort out documents.
