In 1972, Richard Sears, a young American from the state of Tennessee, began learning Chinese because of his fascination with traditional Chinese culture.
“Chinese characters are the only ancient script now still in use in the world and it's a wonder of human history,” said Sears in fluent Chinese.
As a primitive form of Chinese characters and the oldest fully developed characters in China, Jiaguwen, or oracle bone inscriptions (刻写的文字),were first discovered in 1899 and named for their inscriptions on tortoise shells and animal bones.
Drawn to the ancient language, Sears often went back and forth between China and the US.In 1994, he made a decision to make the ancient Chinese characters available online.Taking advantage of his professional skill, Sears started programming and building a database of oracle bone inscriptions on his own.It took him seven years just to scan the characters in ancient Chinese books.
In 2002, the Jiaguwen enthusiast's website was launched, though with only a few page views per day in the beginning. However, it surged to 600,000 per day in 2011 after a blogger recommended the site on Chinese social media platform Weibo.“I became a web celebrity overnight and was given a nickname ‘Uncle Hanzi’”, Sears said with a smile.“Hanzi means Chinese characters.”
During the past 26 years, he has accumulated a great deal of information on his website—more than 96,000 ancient Chinese character forms from archeological sources.Up till now, the website has been continuously updated, giving lovers of the ancient language from all over the world free access to a browse in their free time.In order to reveal the mystery behind the ancient characters, he spent a great deal of money and time buying and going through dozens of books, living on very little money.
Since last year, Sears has been working with a Chinese technology company on a smartphone application for children to learn about how the characters evolved (逐渐演变).The app is expected to be launched soon.

Bioluminescence is an impressive bluegreen glow (光).It refers primarily to light that sea creatures and bacteria send out from the deep ocean.Over the past decade, seeking to replace the electric light bulb, numerous companies have sought to generate bright and renewable light from bioluminescence, but most of their attempts only produced weak light.
Recently, a team of researchers has discovered a new and more effective way to use this light on land for human enjoyment and advancement.By combining bioluminescent mushroom DNA with tobacco plants, the plants could begin sending out renewable light which is ten times stronger than what was previously known.
Researchers also found the health of the plants isn't affected by the mushroom DNA.In fact, various parts of the plant are illuminated including the roots, stems, leaves, and even the flowers. And the younger plants glow more strongly than the older ones.
Besides, there is no need for chemicals to keep a steady flow of light to the plant; unlike fireflies, mushrooms glow throughout their lifetime.“We think that this represents a new wave of bioluminescencebased technologies that rely on selfsustained luminescence,” explained Karen Sarkisyan, lead author of the study.
The researchers were also excited to discover that by involving light inside plants they could see patterns and behaviors of plant life that are typically hidden from the human eye.
Beyond creating glowing bushes, learning about plant biology, and creating sustainable (可持续的) lighting, we can use bioluminescence to help us realize the workings of the human body as well.
“In terms of healthcare, this means that we could have animal disease models where bioluminescence would report physiological (生理的) changes that can be monitored in real time noninvasively (无创地),”explains Sarkisyan.“Scientists are not only dreaming of the day when bioluminescence can help understand illness; they are already discovering ways this plant technology can assist with medical applications.”
8.What can we know about the new bioluminescent plant?

答案 C
9.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “illuminated” in paragraph 3?
A.Lit. B.Applied.
C.Colored. D.Transformed.
根据第二段中的“begin sending out renewable light”及第三段中的“And the younger plants glow”可推断,illuminated意为“照亮”。
答案 A
10.What is typical of bioluminescent mushrooms?
A.They need additional chemicals to keep their light stable.
B.They produce light as long as they are alive.
C.They send out light similar to fireflies.

根据最后一段中的“bioluminescence would report physiological (生理的) changes that can be monitored in real time noninvasively (无创地)”可知,生物发光技术可以从外部监控人体的生理变化。
答案 C
D
(2023·全国乙卷)If you want to tell the history of the whole world, a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the time, has not. Writing is one of humanity's later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate (有文字的) societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things.
Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but in many cases we simply can't. The clearest example of this between literate and nonliterate history is perhaps the first conflict, at Botany Bay, between Captain Cook's voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side, we have scientific reports and the captain's record of that terrible day. From the Australian side, we have only a wooden shield (盾) dropped by a man in flight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day, the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports.
In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas, all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects they made: a history told through things gives them back a voice. When we consider contact (联系) between literate and nonliterate societies such as these, all our firsthand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation , we have to read not just the texts, but the objects.
12.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.How past events should be presented.
B.What humanity is concerned about.
C.Whether facts speak louder than words.
D.Why written language is reliable.
答案 A
13.What does the author indicate by mentioning Captain Cook in paragraph 2?
A.His report was scientific.
B.He represented the local people.
C.He ruled over Botany Bay.
D.His record was onesided.
根据第二段首句“Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects...but in many cases we simply can't”(理想的情况是我们在研究历史时应该将文字和实物结合起来……而很多情况下我们没能这样做)以及该段最后一句“If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day,the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports”(如果我们想要还原那天到底发生了什么,这块盾牌必须和文字记述一样经过深入而严格的质询和诠释)可知,库克船长的记录是片面的,故D项正确。
答案 D
14.What does the underlined word “conversation” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Problem. B.History.
C.Voice. D.Society.
根据第三段中的“a history told through things gives them back a voice”(实物能还原历史事实)和“all our firsthand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation, we have to read not just the texts, but the objects”(我们所有的第一手描述无法避免地会被歪曲,它只是对话的一半。
15.Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?
A.How Maps Tell Stories of the World
B.A Short History of Australia
C.A History of the World in 100 Objects
D.How Art Works Tell Stories

1.说明问题;

Dear Ryan,
I'm Li Hua from Class 3.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Ryan,
I'm Li Hua from Class 3. We're overwhelmed with excitement at the knowledge that an oral English class will be arranged for us. But learning that we'll be randomly paired to do the oral practice, I feel an urge to express my different voice, hoping that this wouldn't offend you.
To begin with, it couldn't be better if students with mixed levels of English could be grouped together deliberately rather than at random, so that we can help each other during our practice. Additionally, to ensure that our oral practice goes smoothly, I suggest that you put three to four students together, with one as the group leader, in which case we can communicate with each other at a great depth.
Should it be possible, I truly hope you can take my suggestions into consideration.
Yours sincerely ,
Li Hua
I was in the 7th grade and was the tops of my class.Friends surrounded me everywhere and I was the star of the school. My parents started creating special spaces at home to display all my medals, certificates and awards.Guests who came home, teachers who met my parents, friends and everyone who met my parents always had these words to say,“You have a very talented child. You are very lucky.”I was filled with happiness and pride when I heard these words and I knew that I had made my parents very happy.
Days rolled by,and I grew stronger and smarter and I was unbeatable in any field.Things were fine until one day.I came back home with an award I won for standing first in the running race at school.Filled with pride,I gave it to my mother and waited for her beautiful smile. She smiled, congratulated me and asked,“Did your friends participate in the race?Did they run the race with you? What were their positions in the race?”I was a little angry.I have won first place. Why would my mother want to know about my friends? In fact,I did not even remember who was second and third or who participated because I was focused to be the first and the other positions were of no significance to me.I managed to tell her that I was very tired and I did not remember everything.
Afterwards I started noticing a change in my mother, especially her smile. It was not the same lovely smile that I used to see.She regularly asked about my friends who were low achievers and who I did not even consider my equals.I did not even know where they sat in my classroom.I was meant to be the first and I did not want to look back to see who was behind.I started ignoring her questions about my friends and I managed to change topic.
One day, when I was getting ready for the sports competition, she asked why I was not practicing with my friends.
It was too much to handle.
I was on the sports field the next day ready to run the 200m running race.
One possible version:
It was too much to handle. I responded that I was meant to be the first and that I had no business to be with friends who weren't ambitious. My mother patiently replied that in the name of success I became like a horse with blinds that focuses only on what is in front and doesn't bother about what is around.I forgot to enjoy the simple things in life such as spending time with friends, helping them with difficulties and learning together.Having realized my mistake, I decided to change.
I was on the sports field the next day ready to run the 200m running race. The race began and in no time, I took the lead.Suddenly, I heard my friend fall to the ground.Without a second thought I ran to him, held up him and helped him finish the race.I helped my friend to sit down and relax. While doing so, out of the corner of my eye I saw there was someone who was looking at me.It was my mother. Her eyes were filled with tears and there I saw what I have not seen for long.
