Section Ⅰ Starting out & Understanding ideas Tuesdays with Morrie Despite① being a sports journalist② with a successful career ahead of him, Mitch Albom feels that there is something missing from his life. This all changes when he is reunited with③ his favourite college professor,Morrie Schwartz. On discovering that Morrie is being weakened④ by a severe illness【1】, Mitch starts visiting him at his house on Tuesdays. The weekly conversations between Mitch and Morrie result in a series of lessons on the meaning of life and how best to live it. 【1】画线部分为“On/Uopn doing sth.” Arthur K ☆☆☆☆☆ This book is about dying, but it is not pessimistic⑤.Indeed, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this book is filled with joy and hope【2】. Morrie's bravery⑥ towards the end of his life is inspirational⑦ and has made me value⑧ my own life more. In fact, far from⑨ being a book about death, it's a book about life. As Morrie says,“Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” As Morrie anticipates⑩ his own death, he observes everything as though through new eyes—the things around him seem more beautiful than ever before and hold new meanings.【3】 From his window, he watches each season change, knowing it could be his last. This encourages us to appreciate what we have, and to make the most of⑪ each day. 【2】本句属于“it+be+n.+to do sth”句型,句中it是形式主语,真正的主语是不定式短语“to find...and hope”。 【3】“As Morrie...death”为As引导的时间状语从句;“as though new eyes”可看作状语从句as though he is through new eyes的省略。 Amy Wang ☆☆☆☆☆ I think this book should be on all school reading lists. After finishing it, I feel I have been given a deeper insight⑫ into the world and can see things from a different point of view⑬. On the 11th Tuesday, Morrie explains that “... the big things—how we think, what we value—those you must choose yourself. You can't let anyone—or any society—determine those for you”. While we are living, we tend to get distracted⑭ by unimportant things, such as gathering material possessions⑮. I think it's important for young people to know that making a lot of money won't always make them happy, or that looking different doesn't make a person abnormal⑯!【4】 It's up to us to find out what is important in our lives and establish our own values⑰.【5】 【4】本句中“it's important...abnormal”是省略了that的宾语从句,该宾语从句中it是形式主语,真正的主语是“to know...abnormal”,“that making...happy”和“that looking...abnormal”并列作know的宾语,且这两个that引导的宾语从句中均使用了ving作主语。 【5】本句中It是形式主语,后面的“to find out...values”为真正的主语。 Morrie says that most people “seem halfasleep⑱”, even when they're doing things they think are important. Reading this book made me feel as if I'd been woken up from a long sleep and finally opened my eyes to⑲ the world! Marty ☆☆☆☆☆ Despite its widespread⑳ recognition, my first impression was that Tuesdays with Morrie is just made up of a collection of overemotional thoughts and messages, many of which are repeated【6】. But thinking back, it did teach me a lesson or two. The book made me stop and think about how much I am influenced by popular culture and the importance of creating my own values based on love and open communication. Although it isn't my favourite book, I'd still recommend that people read it—after all, it is something that's a bit different! Vivian ☆☆☆☆☆ Warning! A box of tissues will be needed to get through this book! Morrie's reflections on love and friendship made me think about my life and all the good friends that I've lost touch with along the way. It made me realise just how much I miss them. I guess that's one of the lessons of the book—always keep in touch with the good people you meet as you go through life. Like Mitch, Morrie makes you aware that you want to die feeling that you have lived life to the full, knowing that you are loved and have loved others as much as you could【7】. As Morrie's favourite poet Auden said,“Love each other or perish.” 【7】画线部分中“that you want to...you could”为that引导的宾语从句,其中“feeling that...full”和“knowing that...you could”均为ving短语作伴随状语。 即使,尽管(=in spite of) Despite/In spite of his age,he still leads an active life. ②journalist n.[C]新闻工作者 journal n.[C]报纸,刊物 journalism n.[U]新闻业,新闻工作 ③be reunited with与…… ⑤pessimistic /ˌpesI'mIstIk/adj. ⑨far from(doing) sth几乎相反,远非 ⑩anticipate/æn'tIsIpeIt/vt.预期,预料 ⑪make the most of充分利用,相当于make full use of,take full advantage of ⑫insight n.[C,U]洞悉,了解(常与介词into连用) ⑬point of view n.[C]考虑角度;观点,看法 from...point of view从……角度来看(=in a...light) ⑭distract vt. 不正常的,反常的 ⑰establish our own values树立我们自己的价值观 establish/I'stæblIʃ/vt. 广泛的,普遍的,分布广的 recognition/ˌrekəɡ'nIʃ(ə)n/n.[sing.,U]承认,认可 a collection of...一批…… overemotional adj.过度情绪化的 open communication开放式沟通 get through完成 lose touch with与…… 重点短语 1. be reunited with 与……重聚 2. a pleasant surprise 一个意外的惊喜 3. far from 远不,完全不 4. point of view 观点 5. get distracted by 分心,转移(注意力) 6. lose touch with 与……失去联系 7. keep in touch with 与…… 8. live life to the full 1.It+be+n./adj.+(for sb)+to do sth (1)Indeed, it was a pleasant surprise to find (惊喜地发现) that this book is filled with joy and hope.
