The Little Prince
Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent① picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval② forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor③ in the act of④ swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.
In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow⑤ their prey⑥ whole, without chewing⑦ it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through⑧ the six months that they need for digestion⑨.”
I pondered⑩ deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece⑪ to the grownups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: “Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor [1]digesting ⑫ an elephant.[2]But since the grownups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing:I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grownups could see it clearly. They always need to [3]have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
The grownups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside⑬ my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to⑭ geography, history, arithmetic⑮ and grammar. [4]That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened⑯ by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grownups never understand anything by themselves, and [5] it is tiresome ⑰ for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
[5]此处为“it is+adj.+(for sb) to do sth”结构,it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式短语。
So then I chose another profession⑱, and learned to pilot⑲ airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance⑳ I can distinguisheq \o(○,\s\up8(21)) China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In the course of this life, I have had a great manyeq \o(○,\s\up8(22)) encounterseq \o(○,\s\up8(23)) with a great many people who have been concerned witheq \o(○,\s\up8(24)) matters of consequenceeq \o(○,\s\up8(25)). I have lived a great deal among grownups. I have seen them intimatelyeq \o(○,\s\up8(26)) , [6]close at handeq \o(○,\s\up8(27)).And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them.
[7]Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clearsightedeq \o(○,\s\up3(28)), I tried the experiment eq \o(○,\s\up3(29)) of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept.[8]I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, [9]whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
find out后接if引导的宾语从句。
Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golfeq \o(○,\s\up8(30)) , and politicseq \o(○,\s\up8(31)),and necktieseq \o(○,\s\up8(32)). And the grownup would be greatly pleased toeq \o(○,\s\up8(33)) have met such a sensible man.
