When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect(方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance,” You got eat or not? “(meaning “Have you eaten?”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different?
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
1. What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in paragraph 1?
A. It reflects their self confidence.
B. It reflects their language levels.
C. It misses the point of communication.
D. It misses the real meaning of accents.
2. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?
A. To justify the use of dialects.
B. To show the diversity of dialects.
C. To correct a grammatical mistake.
D. To highlight a traditional approach.
3. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph?
A. Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B. Seek for an official definition of accents.
C. Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D. Distinguish our local languages from others’.
4. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Everyone Has an Accent

Soothe the Sunday scaries
Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek. But as the weekend comes to an end, many are missing out on Sunday Funday and instead experiencing an overwhelming sense of anxiety and even dread about the upcoming week. 1 Some people describe it as a heaviness they can feel in their body, while others feel so unsettled that they could jump out of their skin.

4 Getting rid of the Sunday scaries isn’t just about minimizing the gloom of the week ahead. Have something to look forward to. This gives you the opportunity to shift your thoughts to fun and will help improve your mood.
End your Sunday with the right energy. Sunday night is a proper wind-down time. Maybe you want to journal, do a face mask, read a few pages of a good book. Do your best to honor this time and make Sunday night all about you. 5

8.Her next goal is to start a ______(慈善) website to raise money for children in poor countries. (根据汉语提示单词拼写)
【答案】
1. make a contribution to charity
【详解】考查固定搭配和非谓语动词。表示“给慈善机构捐款”可用make a contribution to charity,其中make a contribution to是固定搭配,表示“给……捐款”,且would like to do是固定用法,表示“愿意做某事”,所以第一空应用动词原形make。故填①make;②a;③contribution;④to;⑤charity。
2.where/in which they planned to meet
【详解】考查定语从句。根据句意“计划见面的那座房子”可知,此处应用定语从句,表示“他们”应用they;表示“计划做某事”应用plan to do sth.;表示“见面”应用meet;结合“passed”可知,使用一般过去时,先行词the house在定语从句中作地点状语,需用where/in which引导。故填where/in which they planned to meet。
3.The reason why he didn’t come
【详解】考查定语从句和时态。根据汉语提示可知,the reason为先行词,在后面的定语从句作原因状语,关系副词为why,定语从句的主语为he, 谓语为 didn’t come。故填The reason why he didn’t come。
4.from one place to another
【详解】考查介词短语。表达:从一个地方到另一个地方,英语用from one place to another。空格处是状语,要用介词短语。故填from one place to another。
5.take some measures
【详解】考查固定短语。表示“采取一些措施”应用take some measures,位于情态动词should后面,应用动词原形。故填take some measures。
6.are likely to be poor
【详解】考查固定短语。表达:很可能,英语用固定句型be likely to do ,be poor表示“贫穷”。主语是Children;本句陈述一种事实,要用一般现在时,故空格处填are likely to be poor。
7.charity
【详解】考查名词。句意:联合国儿童基金会是一个帮助贫困地区儿童的国际慈善机构。根据an international可知,设空处需填入名词单数形式,结合英文“an institution/organization engaged in relief of the poor(从事救济穷人的机构/组织)”及首字母提示可知,名词charity“慈善机构”符合句意要求。故填charity。
8.charity
【详解】考查名词。句意:她的下一个目标是建立一个慈善网站,为贫穷国家的儿童筹集资金。根据句意和汉语提示可知,应填charity“慈善”作定语,名词作定语时用单数形式。故填charity。
9.We need to take many potential factors into consideration before donating medical supplies to charity.
【详解】考查动词固定搭配。分析句子可知,本句为一般事实性描述,应用一般现在时。表示时间状语“在向慈善机构捐赠医疗用品前”应用before donating medical supplies to charity;表示“把……考虑在内”应用动词固定搭配take...into consideration;表示宾语“诸多潜在的因素”应用many potential factors。故翻译为We need to take many potential factors into consideration before donating medical supplies to charity.

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要论述了每个人都有口音。从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。语言差异可以帮助人们洞察他人的文化经历和背景,因此我们要欣赏口音和方言的价值。
1. 细节理解题。根据第一自然段“When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of misses the point. (当我向一些朋友提到我们都有口音时,他们中的大多数人都自豪地回答说:“好吧,我的英语/汉语等都说得很好。”但这种说法没有切中要害。)”可知,作者认为他/她的朋友忽略了口音的真正含义。故选D。
2. 推理判断题。根据第三自然段“The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different? (根据新加坡英语使用者坚实的语法体系,这个句子结构良好,沟通清晰。为什么仅仅因为它不同就应该是错误的?)”可知,作者认为不能因为它不同就认为它是错的。所以作者使用新加坡口语的例子是在为使用方言进行辩护。故选A。
3. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way. (像这样的语言差异可以洞察人们的文化经历和背景。在一个全球化的时代,一个人说话的方式是一个人身份的一个独特部分。大多数人都乐于谈论他们演讲背后的文化。我们会更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。)”可知,作者在最后一段中建议我们欣赏口音和方言的价值。故选C。
4. 主旨大意题。根据第二自然段“In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone“has an accent“. We all do! (从这个意义上说,指出某人“有口音”是毫无意义的。我们都有!)”以及第三段“Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. (每个人也会说一种方言。)”可知,作者认为每个人都有口音,而且作者在最后一段指出不同的口音可以让我们更多地了解我们生活的世界,并在这一过程中结交朋友。故A项“Everyone Has an Accent (每个人都有口音)”最能概括本文主旨。故选A。
