It is home to hundreds of species of fish. However, the Chinese paddlefish(白鲟), once common in the area, is no longer a member of this ecosystem(生态系统). Scientists from China say that the species completely disappeared between 2005and 2010. The Chinese paddlefish was one of the world's largest freshwater fish species. It could grow as long as seven metres. The fish has a big nose that earned it the nickname“elephant fish”. The Chinese paddlefish is an ancient species. It first appeared in the Jurassic period(侏罗纪时期). After living for 200 million years, the species finally went extinct because of human activities. Overfishing in the 1970s greatly reduced the species’ population . An average of 25 tons of the Chinese paddlefish were caught each year during that period. And in 1981, the building of the Gezhouba Dam divided the Chinese paddlefish into two groups. The two groups could not mate(交配) with each other and reproduce. As a result, the species’ population became even smaller. Scientists warn that many freshwater fish species in the Yangtze River are in danger. The Chinese paddlefish is only the first to disappear. Fortunately, China has taken action. In January, the country started a ten-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River. ( )1. When did the Chinese paddlefish completely disappear? A. Before 2004. B.
