Topic 4/24: school and daily routines Period 1: Listening and speaking 1 This is a map of our school. There are six buildings in our school: a library, an office building, a classroom building, a dining hall, a sports hall and a science building. In the middle of the school is a big playground. The library is on the left of the playground near the school gate. There are many books, maps and computers in it. Behind the library, on the left, are the school offices. Between this building and the dining hall is the classroom building with twenty-four classrooms. On the right of the classroom building is the dining hall. In front of the dining hall is the sports hall and that building is for science. There are six science labs and five computer rooms in the science building. At this moment, in different places of the world, people are doing different things. In London, it's five o'clock in the afternoon and people are leaving work and are going home. They're waiting for buses or trains. Some people are driving home. Some are getting off buses or trains. Some are having afternoon tea at home or having a drink. In Moscow, it's eight o'clock in the evening, so people aren't having afternoon tea. They are having dinner at home or in restaurants. Some are going to the theatre or watching a film. Some are watching television or playing games at home. In Beijing, it's one o'clock at night, so people aren't having dinner. Most people are sleeping. Some people are still working and some are going home from work. In Los Angeles, it's nine o'clock in the morning. People aren't sleeping. They're working. Children are starting their lessons. In New York, it's twelve o'clock. People aren't working. They're having lunch. They are eating hamburgers or hot dogs and drinking coffee or cola. Some people are seeing friends, calling home or shopping. Mum: Now, what’s our train number? Dad: T27 to Lhasa. It’s leaving from Platform 2. Mum: The meeting in Lhasa is very important for us, but I’m sorry you can’t come with us, Betty. Betty: So am I, but I can’t miss two weeks of school. Mum: Will you remember everything I told you? Be especially careful with the door. Shut it when you are in and lock it when you go out. Betty: Yes, Mum. I can look after myself, although it won’t be easy for me. Mum: Well, make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. And I’ve left lots of your favourite biscuits. Betty: Don’t worry. I can cook simple meals. Dad: There won’t be anybody to wake you up in the morning. Betty: I’ll be fine. My clock rings so loudly that it will certainly wake me up. Mum: I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but I don’t know what it is. (announcement: we advise all passengers for Train T27 to Lhasa to go immediately to Platform 2. Your train is about to leave. ) Betty: That’s your train! Goodbye Mum, goodbye Dad. Mum: I know. I haven’t given you our address in Lhasa. Betty: Send me a text message! Have a good trip! Mum: Bye my dear! Betty: Bye. See you in a couple of weeks. My “perfect holiday” As a boy, like all other boys, I wanted to be a man. But my parents did everything for me. Actually, they managed every minute of my life. Although they loved me, I felt a bit unhappy with them. “Zheng Chenyu, do your homework!” “Practise the piano!’’ “Turn off the TV! ’’ I became so bored with their orders that I wished they would leave me alone. Well, my wish came true! Although my parents were very worried about leaving me, they had to go away on business for a few days. Now was my chance! I could have some fun at last! As soon as I got home from school the first day, I happily threw my schoolbag on the sofa and ate lots of snacks. Then I enjoyed an exciting film on TV, and after that I played computer games. I liked the games so much that I played until midnight. The next morning I woke up late. I had to hurry to school without breakfast, but I was still late. The teacher asked me for my homework, but I could not hand it in. With an empty stomach, I was unable to play basketball with my classmates! I felt tired and sleepy at school all day long. When I got home, I tried to cook some rice, but I burnt it. I even dropped my father's cup when I was cooking! I found myself so bad at simple cooking tasks. I started to feel lonely. I wanted Mum and Dad to come home soon. Mum cooked such delicious food, and made sure I never forgot my homework. Dad always helped me with any difficult questions, and told funny jokes when I was unhappy. Then I realised being home alone was not always perfect. When my parents came home, they were happy to find that I could cook and tidy up now. I told them my home alone story and we all laughed. My school life My name is Susie Thompson, and I'm fifteen. I've been at River School, London, since I was eleven. If I pass my exams next year, I will stay here until I'm eighteen. River School is a secondary school, about twenty minutes away from my home by bike. Before I came here, I went to the primary school near my home. I started primary school when I was five and stayed there for six years. We go to school every weekday from 8:45 am to 3:15 pm. Before class, our teacher checks which pupils are present or absent. Then everyone goes to the main hall. There, our head teacher tells us news about the school. At 9:05 am the bell rings, and lessons start. Each lesson lasts for an hour. We have a break from 11:05 am until 11:15 am, then another lesson, and then lunch for an hour. In the afternoon, we have two more lessons before school finishes. This year I have ten subjects: maths, English, physics, chemistry, French, history, geography, music, IT and PE. Some people learn German instead of French. lt's lucky we don't have exams in every subject. We have a large sports ground for football and tennis, where we can play both during and after school hours. After-school activities, such as sports clubs and language societies, are popular too. During the school year there are usually visits to museums and to camps for activities such as climbing and walking in the country. Last year a group of us even went to Japan. There are parties and a sports day, and school plays are really popular. Once a term, there is a parents' meeting, so our parents and teachers can talk about our progress. What do I like best about school? English, chemistry, music, sports clubs, school plays... and above all, my friends! The schoolday begins at 9 am. Class teachers meet the class and check who is present or absent at the start of the day. All the classes meet once a week on Fridays. The head teacher speaks to the whole school. Morning lessons begin at 9:20 am. There are three forty-minute lessons, with a twenty-minute break in between. The lunch break is from 12 pm to 1 pm. Afternoon lessons begin at 1 pm and the schoolday finishes at 3 pm. All the students study and take exams in maths, science and English. They also choose one subject from history, geography, art, French and Chinese. All the students take PE lessons, but no exams are required. The chess, music, language and theatre clubs often have meetings after school. Students may join as many clubs as they like, but they must join at least one. After-school sports practice and matches take place on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The school has a good record in sports. Last year, we were the best in football and tennis, and some students won prizes for swimming and running.
