Actually, 97% of climbers use oxygen to reach Everest’s top. The thin air makes most people breathless at 3,500 metres, and the vast majority of climbers use oxygen past 7,000 metres. A typical climbing group will have 8–15 people in it, with an almost equal number of guides, and they’ll spend weeks to get to the top after reaching Base Camp. But Kilian Jornet Burgada is different. Born in 1987 in Catalonia, Spain, Kilian was on skis while other children his age were learning to walk. At one and a half years old he did a five-hour hike with his mother. One and a half years later, he climbed his first mountain and competed in his first cross-country ski race. At ten, he did a 42-day crossing of the Pyrenees. He was 13 when he trained with the Ski Mountaineering Technical Centre (CTEMC) in Catalonia, entering competitions. At 18, he took over his own ski-mountaineering and trail-running training, with a schedule that only allows a couple of weeks of rest a year. Sleeping only seven hours a night, Kilian Jornet seems almost superhuman. He has a much faster recovery time after exercise. This is related to his childhood in the mountains, but this is not decisive. In fact, he often sets himself challenges to see how long he can suffer difficult conditions to truly understand what his body and mind can deal with. In May 2017, Kilian climbed Mount Everest alone, without an oxygen mask or fixed ropes for climbing. He did it in 26 hours. And then, five days later, he did it again, this time in only 17 hours. He finds time to record his career and now has written three books, Run or Die, The Invisible Border and Summits of My Life. 24. What does the author intend to tell about Mount Everest in the first paragraph? A. Climbing it is tough. B. Many people climb it. C. It isn’t vital to control it. D. There’s little oxygen on it. 25. What did Kilian Jornet do in sports at 3? A. He hiked for 5 hours. B. He crossed the Pyrenees. C. He climbed his first mountain. D. He joined CTEMC in Catalonia. At one and a half years old he did a five-hour hike with his mother. One and a half years later, he climbed his first mountain信息可知答案。 5 26. What sets Kilian Jornet apart? A. He recovers from injuries quickly. B. He was born in a mountainous area. C. He has strong mental strength. D. He has special ways to sleep. 27. What was the difference between Kilian and other Everest climbers in 2017? A. He predicted climbing difficulties. B. He already wrote three related books. C. He was already a professional climber. D. He climbed a lot faster than the others. 5 C A recent report from a United Nations group called UNESCO warns that using technology in classes should be reconsidered. The goal of the new report was to improve how technology is used in education. The report says that technology that has a long history of being used in education can be helpful. It can help in many ways. It can allow students to learn in ways that are more interesting; it can help teachers explain difficult ideas; it can also help students who have special needs. These days, it’s common for students to use computers or tablets. In many places, it’s normal for students to look up information on the Internet rather than using books. However, it shouldn’t be the focus. Instead, technology should be used to support learning. “Too much attention on technology in education usually comes at a high cost,” the report says. One study that was carried out in 14 countries showed that even just having a smartphone nearby can take the student’s attention off learning. Even so, UNESCO says that less than 25% of the world’s countries ban phones in schools. Over the last 20 years, technology has been used more and more in schools. UNESCO claims that technology changes so fast that it’s hard to study how it really affects students. The new report says that many of the studies showing that technology helps students come from rich countries. The report also points out that some of the studies in favor of technology come from companies that sell technology to schools. “We need to teach children to live both with and without technology,” said Manos Antoninis, the director behind the UNESCO report. The report suggests that the best way to learn is still to work closely with teachers. Working with other classmates also helps students learn. UNESCO says that schools should spend more money on things like books, classrooms, and teachers. 28. What does UNESCO’s new report think of technology in education? A. It’s often a burden for students. B. Developing it can be costly. C. Putting it into use takes time. D. It can be double-edged. 29. What does UNESCO’s new report indicate about technology in paragraph 4? A. Companies shouldn’t sell it to others. B. It regularly affects students too much. C. Some studies about it are unreliable. D. Rich nations use it less rather than more. The report also points out that some of the studies in favor of technology come from companies that sell technology to schools信息可知,该报告指出,一些支持技术应多用于教育的研究恰恰来自向学校出售这种技术的公司。 5 30. What does UNESCO suggest schools do in the last paragraph? A. Value traditional teaching methods. B. Increase investment in technology. C. Change the ways that teachers teach. D. Make sure students are into technology. UNESCO says that schools should spend more money on things like books, classrooms, and teachers信息可知,联合国教科文组织建议:学校应该在书籍、教室和教师等方面投入更多资金。 31. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A research paper. B. A local magazine. C. A history book. D. A product description. 5 D Electric air taxis got one step closer to liftoff, when one company called Joby Aviation was given the green light by the FAA—the government group in charge of America’s skies to start flight testing its new products. An air taxi is a small aircraft that can go straight up and down, like a helicopter. Joby has been building and flying pre-production prototypes(原型)thousands of miles since 2017. But this time around is significant, because it’s the first of its non-handmade vehicles to be approved for test flights. Until now, the company could only show a prototype made by hand—as opposed to the ones now coming off its production line in a factory. Joby aims to begin commercial passenger operations in America in 2025. They’ve teamed up with Delta Air Lines to deliver a “transformational, sustainable home-to-airport transportation service” for fliers, set to roll out first in New York and Los Angeles. Joby’s air taxis will be flown by a pilot, carrying four other passengers. They can fly as fast as 320kph and can go around 160 kilometers before the electric batteries need to be recharged. Compared with helicopters, Joby claims their taxis are both quieter and cheaper. The company hopes to begin services at an average price of around $3 per mile — comparable to that of a taxi or Uber — and eventually move that down to below $1 per mile. But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become common. For one thing, governments need to make rules about where, when, and how these taxis can fly. And as exciting as the idea of flying taxis is, some people keep themselves in suspense about them. The taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they’ll still be adding noise and traffic to our skies. Some people have concerns that only rich people will be able to afford to use them. 32. What is special about the flying taxi to be tested this time? A. It is electric. B. It is factory-built. C. It is just a prototype. D. It is just like a helicopter. But this time around is significant, because it’s the first of its non-handmade vehicles to be approved for test flights. Until now, the company could only show a prototype made by hand — as opposed to the ones now coming off its production line in a factory信息可知,以前Joby测试的空中出租车均是手工制作的原型。 33. What is Joby trying to do to its flying taxis? A. Carry more passengers at once. B. Partner with Delta Air Lines. C. Increase the speed of flying taxis. D. Be competitive in price. The company hopes to begin services at an average price of around $3 per mile — comparable to that of a taxi or Uber — and eventually move that down to below $1 per mile信息可知,Joby公司想要在营运价格上占据优势。 5 34. What does the underlined part “in suspense” in the last paragraph mean? A. Curious. B. Hopeful. C. Worried. D. Serious. The taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they’ll still be adding noise and traffic to our skies. Some people have concerns that only rich people will be able to afford to use them信息可知,这里表示:人们对空中出租车持担忧态度。 35. What’s the best title for the text? A. Flying Taxis Are Starting to Take Off B. Joby Aviation Is Making Flying Taxis C. Are You Willing to Take Flying Taxis? D. Are Flying Taxis Worth Developing? Swimming is a great way for kids to stay cool and keep active during the hot summer months. Below are a few tips to help you keep your children safe in and around water all summer long. 36 Only swim in areas designated(指定)for swimming, such as pools and safe parts of lakes, and be sure there is a lifeguard on duty to prevent major incidents. Tell them to avoid diving or jumping from high places if an area is not designated as safe for those activities. Use the buddy(伙伴)system. 37 A good way to give children an extra layer of safety while encouraging them to have fun with their friends is carrying out a buddy system. You just have each child pair with another. 38 Take some classes. Strong swimming skills are the best defense against the dangers of water. Before bringing children to the pool, it is a good idea to take them to some swimming classes. 39 They’ll also recognize some common water dangers and know how to keep safe in the water. Keep an eye on young swimmers. Young swimmers generally go into the water with very little experience. Therefore, you are supposed to keep a close eye on them the entire time they are in and around the water. 40 Don’t let young children, whether they are wearing a life jacket or not, get too far from you. This is so vital to their safety. A. Watch where your children will swim. B. Teach everyone in your family how to swim. C. Examine the water well before letting children go in. D. Don’t play on your cell phone while they are swimming. E. They will learn the basics of swimming and keeping afloat. F. One of the keys to keeping children safe in the water is constant attention. G.
