Unit 5 A delicate world 1 Period 4 Developing ideas & Other parts 5 Good morning, everyone. It is my great pleasure① to give a lecture here on behalf of② the Be at One with Nature Association③.  作讲座常见的开场语。 ①pleasure n.[C]乐事,趣事 ②on behalf of 代表 ③association n.[C]协会,社团,联盟 7 为何是神农架? 8 As we know, in 2016, Shennongjia made it④ onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there are so many important places not yet on this list. So you might ask:why Shennongjia? Is it its forests that stretch on and on⑤ like great green seas? Is it the legendary⑥ father of Chinese herbal medicine, Shennong, after whom the park is named⑦? Or is it the mysterious⑧ creature called “Yeren” (wild man) that has captured the imagination⑨ of the world?  9 画线部分中有三个一般疑问句,这三个问句都是强调句型的一般疑问句式,每个问句最后都省略了强调句型中的that部分“that made Shennongjia onto the UNESCO World Heritage List”。第一个问句中,“that stretch...green seas”是that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词its forests;第二个问句中,Shennong作“the legendary father of Chinese herbal medicine”的同位语,“after whom the park is named”是“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句,修饰先行词Shennong;第三个问句中,“that has...the world”是that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词the mysterious creature。 10 ④make it获得成功 ⑤stretch on and on 不断地伸展 stretch vi.延伸,绵延 on and on 连续不停地,持续地 ⑥legendary adj.大名鼎鼎的,传奇式的 ⑦be named after... 以……命名 ⑧mysterious/mIˈstIəriəs/adj. 抑或是那个引起了全世界的兴趣的神秘生物“野人”? 12 UNESCO awarded Shennongjia this status⑩ because it meets two criteria⑪ required by the list. It contains a naturally-balanced environment that allows the many and various species to live and prosper⑫. It is also one of the rare locations⑬ in the world where scientists can observe in real time the ecological and biological processes⑭ that occur as the plants and animals develop and evolve.  13 过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰two criteria。 where在此引导定语从句,修饰先行词one of the rare locations,该定语从句中又包含了一个that引导的定语从句,修饰先行词the ecological and biological processes。 14 ⑩status/ˈsteItəs/n.[U,C,usually sing.] 16 For the first criterion, Shennongjia is apparently⑮ one of the most “complete” natural areas in the world. The region rises⑯ from about 400 metres to over 3,000 metres above sea level, giving it the name the “Roof of Central China”. The vast range⑰ in altitude⑱ results in a great variation⑲ in climatic conditions⑳. This allows a wide variety of㉑ species to thrive㉒. Some of the plants and animals have survived millions of years, and are regarded as㉓ living fossils㉔. 17 ⑮apparently/əˈpærəntli/adv. 高出,耸立 ⑰the vast range 巨大的变动范围 vast/vɑːst/adj. 20 For the second criterion,we can see that Shennongjia has incredible biodiversity.Look at this slide㉕. According to official statistics, over 3,000 plant species have been recorded there. This represents㉖ more than ten per cent of China’s total floral㉗ richness. Shennongjia supports more than 600 vertebrate㉘ species, including the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey and the Clouded Leopard. Additionally㉙,around 4,300 insect species have been recorded. 21 ㉕slide n.[C]幻灯片 ㉖represent linking verb 等于,相当于,意味着 ▶This treatment represents a significant advance in the field of cancer research. ㉗floral/ˈflɔːrəl/adj. 23 It is a challenge to look after so many species. In winter, scientists brave㉚ heavy snow and freezing temperatures to supply food to the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. Thanks to their efforts, the monkey’s population has doubled since the 1980s.Their number reached over 1,300 in 2015 and continues to grow. 勇敢面对,冒(风险),经受(困难) ▶It was time to brave the rush hour traffic again. 25 But the most impressive aspect of Shennongjia is the local people, who take things from nature without causing damage.I visited a local village which is known for its home-made honey. What is special about the honey is that it is produced by the earliest species of Chinese bee.Every spring, the villagers place beehives around their houses to attract these wild bees from the forest. Although endangered㉛ elsewhere㉜ in China due to the invasion of foreign species㉝, the bees of Shennongjia have coexisted with㉞ the local people for centuries.By providing the bees with a secure㉟ home, the villagers collect their honey in return. This is just one of the ways in which people of Shennongjia live and work in harmony with nature.  26 what引导的主语从句,what在从句中作主语。 27 ㉛endangered/InˈdeIndʒəd/adj.濒临灭绝的 ㉜elsewhere/elsˈweə/adv.在别处,去别处 ㉝the invasion of foreign species外来物种的入侵 invasion/InˈveIʒ(ə)n/n.[C,U]涌入 ㉞coexist with... 和平共处 coexist/ˌkəʊIɡˈzIst/vi. 29 All of this explains why Shennongjia earned—and deserves—its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List , as well as highlighting how understanding, awareness and hard work have contributed towards protecting a unique and wonderful part of our natural world .  30 why引导的宾语从句,作explains的宾语。 how引导的宾语从句,作highlighting的宾语,其中“protecting a...world”为动词-ing短语作介词towards的宾语。 32 Thank you for listening. Now,does anyone have any questions? Read the text and choose the best answers. 1.Which of the following is NOT true about Shennongjia? A study in the May 20 issue of the journal Nature confirmed that there has been a warming trend in the world’s oceans since 1993, as the waters have absorbed much of the extra energy in the planet’s atmosphere. The warming that has already occurred, and is expected to continue in the coming decades, will likely spell bad news for many ocean species, such as corals and species that live in the cold waters of the planet’s poles. But some creatures beneath the ocean surface might actually have an advantage in the newly warmed waters. A 2008 study, for example, said that a warming of just a few degrees Fahrenheit in Antarctic waters could make them suitable for sharks, which haven’t lived in the area for about 40 million years. It’s easier for sharks to keep their high metabolism (新陈代谢) in warmer waters. If sharks do move into the area, they could cause damage to the existing ecosystems of the oceans around Antarctica. A study of starfish (海星) found these typical ocean creatures grew faster in waters at warmer temperatures and higher carbon dioxide levels (another result of all the extra greenhouse gas in the atmosphere) than in normal conditions—which is bad news for the shellfish they live on. Work by Jeremy Jackson, a professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California San Diego, suggests that ocean warming—along with other threats such as overfishing and habitat destruction—could change once complex ocean ecosystems into ones that favor simpler species, such as microbes, toxic algal blooms and jellyfish. 1.How is paragraph 3 mainly developed? A.By giving examples. B.By analyzing causes. C.By making comparisons. D.By making classifications. 2 3 1 4 2.What can we know about sharks from the fourth paragraph? A.They are native to Antarctic waters. B.They do harm to the whole ecosystem. C.They can benefit from warm water conditions. D.They threaten simpler species in Antarctic waters. 根据第四段中的“a warming...make them suitable for sharks”及“It’s easier for sharks to keep their high metabolism in warmer waters”可知,鲨鱼能够从温暖的水环境中获益。 2 3 1 4 3.What will ocean warming likely bring about? A.Promoting the growth of starfish. B.An ecosystem of smaller creatures. C.Different food sources for sea creatures. D.Damaging living places of deep-sea species. 2 3 1 4 4.What is the purpose of the text? A.To explain why ocean warming benefits some species. B.To introduce how creatures survive in warmer oceans. C.To clarify some misunderstandings about ocean warming. D.To show which sea species will benefit from warmer oceans. 纵观全文,尤其是根据第一段中的“This warming will likely benefit some sea species at the expense of others.” Cities are diverse ecosystems. In addition to visitors from the wild,a large number of species share our urban areas. As our cities spread,we need to think about what it is like for other species to have human neighbors. Cities are built for humans. 1 For example, most city parks are kept neat and tidy so that humans will find them beautiful. But when we cut grass or plant flowers, we destroy natural habitats.  1 2 3 4 5 115 A.They are built to protect birds. B.Our actions sometimes help other species. C.If we do not, more species will become extinct. D.They do not always provide suitable habitats for wildlife. E.Instead of being kept in cages, wildlife can move about freely. F.They would sit on it and their droppings would fall into the water. G.At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them. 1 2 3 4 5 2 When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats (蝙蝠),and soon the bridge was the home of thousands of bats. 3 Now, they have come to value their winged neighbors. The bats are a tourist attraction, and they eat lots of bugs every night.  1 2 3 4 5 2 3 4 5 A.They are built to protect birds. 2 3 4 5 1 2 When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom. This made a good home for bats (蝙蝠),and soon the bridge was the home of thousands of bats. 3 Now, they have come to value their winged neighbors. F.They would sit on it and their droppings would fall into the water. G.At first, people were afraid of the bats and tried to get rid of them. 2 3 4 5 1 There are also structures built with the aim of bringing wildlife into the city. The Olympic Forest Park in Beijing is a good example. The park uses native plants and creates open, natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone in Beijing with over 160 species of birds. In many ways, the park is the opposite of a zoo. 4   2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 A.They are built to protect birds. B.Our actions sometimes help other species.
