Text 2 W:I'm having coffee near the park. Where are you? M:I have just finished my basketball practice in the gym. I will go to the coffee shop to meet you. Text 3 W:Would you like me to fry the eggs or just boil them for your breakfast? M:I'd like them boiled. But don't boil them for a long time. Text 4 W:Can we reschedule our dinner tonight from 7:00 to 9:00? I need to finish a report this evening. M:I'm afraid the restaurant will be closed at 9:00. How about 8:00 tomorrow? Text 5 W:Hey,Josh, will you take Pepper for a walk with me? M:Sure! Let's take her to our neighbor's big yard. We should have time to play there and still make it back for dinner,so we don't get into trouble with Mom and Dad. W:Good idea. Text 6 W:When did you start wearing glasses? M:Ever since I was seven years old. W:Oh,it is already ten years. Did you get it from your family? M:No,I'm the only one in my family who wears glasses. W:Did you watch too much TV before six years old? M:No. My mom knew that watching TV could ruin my eyes,so she was really strict about it. W:How did you end up wearing glasses, then? M:Well,I held my cartoon books too close to my face,so I guess that's how I harmed my eyesight. Text 7 W:Did you hear about that new robot restaurant? M:No. What is it? A restaurant with robots walking around as waiters? W:That'd be funny, but no. It's a restaurant where everything is done without any human assistance. M:Are you saying the restaurant doesn't have a single human staff member? W:Exactly. M:That's fascinating! How does it work, then? W:Well, you order on a touch screen, and then your food will be prepared by robots designed by programmers. M:Cool! So the restaurant was run by a group of programmers? W:No. It's a project by a group of university students. They hired professional programmers with financial support from their school. M:Sounds great! Is the business good there? W:Obviously it's very popular. The service is very fast, which is the main reason for people to go there. M:Is there anything that customers complain about, though? W:Oh yeah. Even though the ingredients are very fresh, the variety of dishes is very limited. Text 8 M:Hey,I heard you're about to go to China this summer. W:Yes,I'm going to stay there for two months as an exchange student. M:Nice! Which city are you going to stay in? W:The exchange school is in Beijing. But I'm also planning to take some short trips during the weekends. M:That's great. Will you go to Chengdu to see the pandas? W:I'd love to! But I don't think I'll have enough time to take a trip there. M:What a pity! Where do you plan to visit, then? W:Shanghai, for sure, and maybe Xi'an as well. M:Cool! Will you be staying in a dormitory? W:Well,we can choose to stay in a dormitory, rent an apartment or live with a local family. M:I would stay with a local family. You get to experience the culture more that way. W:Exactly! I've already chosen that. Text 9 W:Good morning,Dr. Jackson. M:Good morning,Paula. You don't look very well. What seems to be the trouble? W:Yesterday afternoon,I was planting cabbage in the garden when it suddenly began to rain heavily. I got completely wet. I didn't pay much attention to it. But at midnight,I began to feel very cold. M:Did you have anything to eat this morning? W:No. There might be something wrong with my stomach, too, because I didn't feel hungry at all. M:Well,Paula, you've caught a bad cold. You still have a high fever. I'm afraid you have to stay in the hospital for two days. W:But Dr. Jackson, there is an English test on Wednesday, and I've only got three days to prepare for it. I need to go home to study. M:Paula, you can read your books while you are getting treated here. You'll get well much slower if you go home and just take medicine. W:Well then,I'll call my brother to bring my books here. Text 10 I attend English classes at a language program in my city because I want to improve my communication skills.English has become the international language around the world, and I might be able to get better employment and make more friends if I can speak English fluently.I take four classes a day that all focus on different language skills including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. I think that some people have a natural ability to pick up a language and master it, but I don't think I fit that group. Actually, learning to speak English well requires a great amount of effort, patience, and practice. Too often, students speak English in their classes, but they go back to their native language after school ends. In fact,if you want to adjust to a new culture, you should make it a point to study, review, and practice everything you are studying. Otherwise, you will never learn and fit into any group. A First Aid: To the bone With summer in full swing and kids excited to head outdoors to play, the possibility of getting injured isn't a distant possibility. When the injury takes a more serious tone, such as a sprain or a fracture, it's important to know what to do and not to panic. How do we tell the difference between a sprain and a fracture? It is difficult to differentiate as both conditions result in swelling around the injury, bruising of the skin and both feel pretty painful. The best thing to do is to treat the injury as if it is a fracture. How many types of fractures are there? Generally, there are two types. Closed fractures are when there is a break in the bone but no damage to the skin or tissue. There will be swelling or skin discolouration at the site of the injury and the injured limb (肢体) cannot move. Open or compound fractures are more obvious as there is a break in the bone, bleeding, and an open wound near the fracture. There is a risk of bacteria getting into the bone, which can cause infection, so seek treatment promptly. What should parents do? Parents should: 1.Take clothing off the injured area. 2.If there is no open wound, apply an ice pack to relieve pain and swelling. 3.If a bone fracture is suspected, make a simple splint (夹板) with a board or folded newspapers to immobilise the limb. 4.For open fractures, do not wash the wound or push in any bone that's sticking out as this causes infection. If the wound continues to bleed, use a clean cloth and press the wound to stop the bleeding. Do not straighten the deformed or curved limbs. 5.If the injury is to the head, neck or back, do not move your child and call 120 immediately. D.By applying pressure to stop the bleeding. 根据“Parents should:”部分中的第四点第二句“If the wound continues to bleed, use a clean cloth and press the wound to stop the bleeding.” D。 21 22 23 B Society tells us we should socialise to the fullest, and that those who are surrounded by people are the most successful and the happiest. These days, we're almost always connected, whether in person or through our phone screens and online social networks. But there's something to be said for solitude(独处), “Being alone doesn't necessarily mean being lonely.” In fact, spending time by yourself is an essential element of self-care. Around the globe, different cultures have wide-ranging perspectives on what it means to spend time alone. If you live or have spent time in the United States, you're probably aware that Americans tend to reject solitude. For many younger people, weekends are packed with social activities, ranging from brunch with friends to dinner parties to game nights to drinking at bars and everything in between. The United States isn't the only place where you'll find a heavy emphasis on social time. Across the Atlantic, the United Kingdom is known for being an extremely extroverted (外向型的) country. A survey of Brits found that more than half had never done and would be unwilling to do activities like going to theme parks or seeing live music alone. Most Brits spend almost twice as much of their leisure time socialising with others as they do being alone. The home can be a place of rest, relaxation and recharge—that is, if you live by yourself or have the space to be alone in your home. The country in which people are least likely to live alone is India, at about 4 percent of the population. China is also quite fond of multiple-person households, with only about 10 percent of people living by themselves. In more collectivist cultures like these, many aspects of life are related to community. Thus, spending time alone isn't as ingrained(根深蒂固的)as a social convention in places like these, and the good of the group takes priority over the needs of one person. 24.What can we learn from the first paragraph? A.People can benefit more from solitude. B.People tend to socialise more nowadays. C.Being alone generally equals being lonely. D.Being alone enables people to be carefree. 根据第一段中的“Society tells us we should socialise to the fullest...whether in person or through our phone screens and online social networks.” 24 25 26 27 25.Which of the following best describes young Americans? A.Imaginative and wild. B.Responsible and energetic. C.Optimistic and dutiful. D.Outgoing and sociable. 根据第二段中的“If you live or have spent time in the United States...drinking at bars and everything in between.” 24 25 26 27 26.Why are most Chinese people more likely to live together? A.Because they share a specific culture. B.Because they lack some local customs. C.Because they possess enough home space. D.Because they give priority to their own needs. 根据最后一段中的“China is also quite fond of multiple-person households... many aspects of life are related to community.” 故选A项。 24 25 26 27 27.What's the best title for the text? A.The Essence of Self-care B.Enjoy Solitude, Enjoy Yourself C.The Functions of Different Cultures D.The Perspectives on Solitude 答案:D 24 25 26 27 标题归纳题。根据文章第二段首句“Around the globe, different cultures have wide-ranging perspectives on what it means to spend time alone.” 24 25 26 27 C If you've followed dieting advice and experienced significant weight loss, only to have it return, you're not alone. It's also not your fault. The human body is designed to maintain balance as much as possible. In a restricted calorie environment, the body adapts to using fewer calories each day to function. This leads to a slowing metabolism (新陈代谢),which makes it even more difficult to lose weight and ultimately leads to gaining weight again.Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, which means it burns more calories at rest than fat does.If your body starts breaking down muscle to fuel its basic functions, that can further slow your metabolism and make losing weight and keeping it off difficult. Because the body wants to preserve weight,a slow approach to losing extra pounds is healthier than sharply cutting calories. It's better to pace your weight loss by eating just enough calories to keep you at a deficit while still meeting most of your body's energy needs. This will help keep your metabolism working efficiently. Determining the number of calories you need to eat to meet that rate of weight loss will depend on several factors, including your age, starting weight, activity level and sex. Candace Pumper,a staff dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, says,“The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position statement on adult weight management recommends 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day for men to support weight loss.” She notes, however, “Those guidelines are not meant to substitute for professional nutritional advice or treatment. It's recommended that individuals follow the advice of their dietitian's guidance regarding appropriate calorie intake,as many factors affect calorie needs.” She also notes that if one is looking to lose weight quickly,he has to work with and be supervised by a health care provider. 28.Why do people gain weight after dieting for long? A.The muscle burns fewer calories at rest than fat. B.The body functions slowly because of dieting. C.It is hard for you to strike a balance while in hunger. D.It is impossible to have a long-term effect. 根据第一段中的“In a restricted calorie environment ...This leads to a slowing metabolism, which makes it even more difficult to lose weight and ultimately leads to gaining weight again.” 28 29 30 31 29.What does the underlined part “at a deficit” probably mean in paragraph 2? A.Being improper. B.Being unhealthy. C.Being inadequate. D.Being unnecessary. 根据画线短语前面的“pace your weight loss by eating just enough calories”和后面的“while still meeting most of your body's energy needs”可知,你要确保摄入的卡路里不会那么多,但同时还能满足身体的能量需求,故画线短语的意思应该与C项的意思最为接近,故C项正确。inadequate“不足的”。 28 29 30 31 30.Which of the following may determine calorie loss? ①age ②weight ③identity ④gender A.②③④ B.①②③ C.①②④ D.①③④ 答案:C 28 29 30 31 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Determining the number ...that rate of weight loss will depend on several factors, including your age, starting weight, activity level and sex.” 28 29 30 31 31.What is suggested in the last paragraph? A.Individual efforts matter a lot. B.Professional advice is important. C.Calorie needs vary from person to person. D.Health care providers can be relied on for weight gain. 28 29 30 31 D When the European Commission's LIFE program first brought together more than 20 organizations in 2002 to rescue the lynx ( 山 猫), the species had all but disappeared. Widespread hunting and a virus had wiped out most of the Iberian Peninsula's European rabbits, the lynx's main prey. Lynx breed in captivity ( 圈 养) easily, however. Near one main release location, Iberian lynx have even learned to live in neighborhoods, in olive groves (橄榄树丛), and around highways. “Thanks to the work carried out over the last 20 years, the number of lynx has increased greatly,” says Francisco Javier Salcedo Ortiz, regional coordinator of the Iberian lynx recovery plan. But the cat's not out of danger just yet. Its thousand-square-mile territory is a collection of five—soon to be seven—isolated groups. For Iberian lynx to fully recover, they must be able to travel from one group to another, ensuring the species's long-term health by diversifying gene pools. That's why the next stage of the LIFE project will focus on creating at least 10 6-square-mile areas of rabbit-rich habitat, which act as passageways among the existing lynx groups. Scientists selected these habitats based on predictions of where lynx are most likely to travel. For instance, lynx prefer to take the shortest paths through undeveloped habitats, and avoid broken-up areas of farmland. The cat is popular, even among farmers and landowners, but a few view lynx as pests and occasionally will poison them for supposedly harming domestic animals. Illegal killings make up nearly 25 percent of annual lynx deaths on the peninsula, the second highest cause of non-natural death, after vehicle strikes. That's why education is the “best tool to improve the lynx population,” says Maribel García Tardío, lead technician for Andalusia's Iberian lynx recovery plan. She and her colleagues regularly meet with landowners and hunters, explaining how lynx rarely kill larger domestic animals. The Iberian lynx is one of 33 small-cat species, many of which are endangered or threatened. These animals have long been eclipsed by their bigger cousins such as lions and tigers, but lately people have begun to recognize the world's little-known cats. 32.Which of the following words can best describe the Iberian lynx according to paragraph 2? A.Active. B.Adaptable. C.Funny. D.Dangerous. 根据第二段中的“Near one main release location, Iberian lynx have even learned to live in neighborhoods, in olive groves, and around highways.” 32 33 34 35 33.What is the aim of the next stage of the LIFE project? A.To free existing lynx from hunger. B.To set up a gene pool of existing lynx. C.To turn some farmland into lynx habitat. D.To help existing lynx connect with each other. 根据第四段中的“That's why the next stage of the LIFE project will focus on creating at least 10 6-square-mile areas of rabbit-rich habitat, which act as passageways among the existing lynx groups.” 32 33 34 35 34.What does Maribel García Tardío do to increase the lynx population? A.She educates landowners and hunters regularly. B.She works to reduce vehicle strikes in lynx habitats. C.She suggests separating lynx from large domestic animals. D.She clears up the misunderstanding between landowners and hunters. 根据第五段中的“That's why education is the ‘best tool to improve the lynx population,’...explaining how lynx rarely kill larger domestic animals.” 故选A项。 32 33 34 35 35.What does the underlined part “eclipsed by” in the last paragraph mean? A.Confused with. B.Protected from. C.Keeping step with. D.Living in the shadow of. Online training is one of the fastest growing parts of the fitness industry. If you're considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks. One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers ultimate convenience. No need to roll out of bed at 5 a. m. to attend that 6 a. m. boot camp class, which may end up being full when you arrive. 36 And what if you're on the road? No problem. You can access your workout video through your phone. 36 37 38 39 40 A.Another is the price. B.But it's not without problems. C.The same goes for different types of exercise. D.However, online personal training isn't for everyone. E.Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience. F.That being said, online workouts aren't perfect when it comes to safety. G.This means you could perform exercises wrongly, or even unsafely, without knowing it. 答案:E 36 37 38 39 40 根据第二段的首句“One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers ultimate convenience.” 同时根据空前“No need to roll out of bed at ...” E。 36 37 38 39 40 37 Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs—most range in cost from $10 to $20 per month. Some are even free. For example, the online Les Mills+program offers a free 30-day trial of its 1,500-plus workouts. 答案:A 36 37 38 39 40 根据空后“Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs...” A项“Another is the price.(另一个是价格)”能够概括段落的主要内容,同时A项中的another与第二段首句中的one相呼应。故选A。 36 37 38 39 40 Online training also has broad offerings. When you head online, you have instructors from around the globe, all ready and willing to help you master your favorite moves. 38 Just because there isn't a Krav Maga class in your area doesn't mean you can't go online to find one led by qualified instructors. 36 37 38 39 40 A.Another is the price. Besides, if you struggle with self-motivation and prefer a social workout environment, online fitness may not be for you. 36 37 38 39 40 A.Another is the price. B.But it's not without problems. C.The same goes for different types of exercise. D.However, online personal training isn't for everyone. E.Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience. The lecture covered topics related to first aid techniques and emergency response. Medical experts were invited to share their knowledge and experience in emergencies such as heart arrest and choking. They demonstrated proper techniques for performing CPR, and the Heimlich manoeuvre. Additionally, the lecture also focused on the significance of staying calm in emergencies, as well as working together to provide effective assistance. The lecture turned out to be a great success. By arming students with the necessary skills and knowledge, we are taking a significant step towards creating a safer and more resilient campus. Birthdays were a huge deal at my workplace. Co-workers went above and beyond to shower the person of honor with food, decorations, affirmations, love and, yes, embarrassment on their special day. As one who preferred to go unnoticed and felt embarrassed at being the center of attention, I was horrified to walk in on my birthday to see my desk decorated with glittery streamers, and a hot pink sash (饰带) with the words, “Kneel! I'm the Birthday Princess”. I was forced to wear for the duration of the day. Although embarrassed by the display, I felt extremely loved. I thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant flowers and delicious chocolate cake my co-workers gave me. Several months after my birthday celebration, our office welcomed Laura, a new member, to the team. Hired as our office manager's assistant, Laura was also tasked with establishing a human resources department. Possessing an ambitious vision and receiving trust from our manager, she immediately made major changes—which were not well received. Gradually, Laura became the centre of gossip When Laura's spring birthday neared, it was evident that no one wanted to celebrate. I understood why no one wanted to go all out in celebrating Laura's birthday, but it bothered me nevertheless. As an extremely shy and introverted (内向的) individual, being left out or ignored was nothing foreign to me, and it pained me to think of the deliberate effort to ignore her birthday. Although she drove me crazy, too, I knew her time in our office had not been easy. Stopping by our local grocery store, I selected some rosy-pink tulips and a birthday card in which I wrote a heartfelt note highlighting some of Laura's qualities I admired, such as her ambitious spirit, creativity, and strong inner drive. Arriving an hour early to work the morning of her birthday, I transformed her corner of the office just like what my co-workers did for my birthday. I watched Laura spot her decorated work area when she arrived. __________________________________________________________ The friendship between Laura and me began since the lunch and continued to grow over the years._______________________________ __________________________________________________________ [参考范文] I watched Laura spot her decorated work area when she arrived. She stopped dead in her tracks. She looked around confusedly, and then our eyes met. She seemed to have known the source of the birthday surprise. Later that morning, she invited me to have lunch with her at the restaurant close to our office. Over the lunch, she told me she was extremely sorrowful that morning because her family were not around and she felt ignored. Laura tearfully expressed the great impact my efforts had on her who expected a gesture of kindness and love more than she knew. Realizing how similar we were, I hugged her firmly. The friendship between Laura and me began since the lunch and continued to grow over the years. Laura and I became inseparable friends. We supported each other through the ups and downs and formed a close bond that extended beyond the workplace. We discovered shared interests and spent weekends exploring new restaurants, going on hikes, and attending art exhibitions. We realized small gestures of kindness for our co-workers on their birthdays were important, which ensured that no one felt left out or ignored and made the office culture more compassionate and empathetic. $$
