Text 1
M:These shoes seem nice. How much did you pay for them?
W:The shoes were a bargain. I got them for half price.
M:You mean you paid only 40 dollars for them? That's a big discount.
Text 2
M:Emma! What are you doing outside? Aren't you enjoying the party?
W:Parties aren't really my thing. I'll head home soon.
M:I will go back too. I've got a meeting tomorrow morning.
Text 3
M:Hello, Maria.
W:Hi, Mike. Are you having your breakfast?
M: No. I'm helping my dad move the furniture in my bedroom. Then we're going to paint the walls.
W:OK. I'll send you a text later. Have fun painting!
Text 4
M:Do you want to go to the concert this evening?
W:Yeah. We could go and eat something first.
M:All right. Why don't I wait for you outside the bookstore at about six?
W:OK.I'll meet you there when I finish work. Then we can look for a café before the concert.
Text 5
W:That's the first film I've seen with an interval. It was hard to work out what was happening and the break even made me forget the actors' names.
M:Indeed. They kept playing the same song, but it added to the atmosphere.
Text 6
W:How did your appointment go?
M:Yeah, fine. They didn't need to do anything.
W:Great! So your eyes are all OK then?
M:The sight test is next week, actually, Mum. I was having my teeth checked today.
W:Oh, yes. Your dad made the appointments this time, so I couldn't remember who you were seeing first. He should be back from the doctor's any minute.
M:So are you making the dinner tonight?
W:I am, and it's your favorite—noodles.
M:Great!
Text 7
W:Ben,did you see the program last night about the Olympic Games? It was brilliant.I learnt so much!
M:Did you?I thought it was quite boring. In fact,I'm not really interested in sports programs.
W: But you love sports. You play football and tennis and basketball and...
M:Yes, I enjoy playing sports, but I hate watching them on TV.
W:Oh, so what kind of TV programs do you like?
M:To be honest, I don't watch much TV. I prefer watching movies on my notebook computer.
Text 8
W:What do you think of the airport?
M:Well, it's far from downtown and when the traffic is bad, it can take an hour and a half to get there. The city really needs to build a new airport that is closer to the city.
W:Do you usually drive to the airport?
M:No. I usually take the airport bus. It's clean and comfortable, and it's a lot cheaper than driving because you don't have to pay for parking. But my wife prefers taking the subway.
W:Is there much to do there while you wait for your flight?
M:Sure. There are a couple of stores that sell souvenirs and magazines. There are also a couple of fast-food places and the service there is nice.
W:How long does it take to check in?
M: It doesn't take long. They're pretty efficient.
Text 9
W:Hey, Jack. Can I ask you something?
M:Sure, what's up?
W: Is something wrong with the system? I've been trying to get in for the past 10 minutes but it's been kicking me out.
M:It's all fine for me. What do you mean, “kicking you out” ?
W:I'm putting in my password and it tells me the system's offline. I've tried every single combination I can think of but nothing works.
M:That's strange. My computer's been fine. Have you tried calling IT?
W:I did, but no one picked up the phone.
M:Oh, right, they've got a meeting right now—but you can interrupt them if it's an emergency.
W:I know. I just didn't want to disturb others if it's something simple. Besides, I've got a couple of phone calls to make today, so I can make them now while I wait.
M:They'd better be long phone calls, then. From what Tom told me, their meeting's going to last three hours.
W:Three hours! What sort of meeting is this?
M:It's that planning meeting about the factory they mentioned, isn't it? Yeah, you'd better go and interrupt them. They're going to be in there all day.
Text 10
Selling your things online helps you get rid of those you don't need, and it can also be a great source of income.
One thing you need to consider carefully is the platform on which you are going to advertise. Most big platforms in the field are so popular with sellers, not just because they can give you access to a bigger pool of potential customers, but also because they offer insurance, both to the seller and the buyer.
The disadvantage, however, is that you will need to pay some money for using the platform. You can use some platforms that either charge a smaller fee for advertising or even no fee at all—but, in that case, what you will need to keep in mind is your safety, especially if the value of the product you're selling is high. It's always best to meet the buyer during the day at a public place such as a coffee shop, a library, or a supermarket parking lot—anywhere monitored by security cameras is good.
A few more things to keep in mind: always be accurate with your descriptions of the things you are selling. The last thing you want is to be accused of cheating and banned from the website. Moreover, be careful with your personal information: do not give out your full name and don't give out your home address or cell phone number unless you have to, and have a separate e-mail address for selling online.
Remember that a smart, prepared seller is a happy seller.

Textspeak is an informal term for the abbreviated (缩写的) language used in text messaging and other forms of electronic communication. In the digital age,it's common to hear how textspeak is ruining language. Some people argue that technology has made us lazy about how we speak and write.
Of course, language does change when it's used digitally.Textspeak is an evolution of language. It's even the focus of a field of linguistics (语言学) called CMC,which is committed to the study of interaction facilitated by technology like computers, mobile phones and tablets.
Contrary to the idea that these innovations are aggravating language,CMC demonstrates a creative repurposing of symbols for technology. These swift and clever evolutions illustrate the flexibility of language and its capacity to communicate meanings not relating to words.
People have been complaining about language being “ruined”.In CE 63,for example,a Roman scholar complained that students of Latin were writing in an “artificial language”.In fact, this writing was a new language that would become French! Similarly,in 1871,the then-president of Harvard University said,“Bad spelling, incorrectness, inelegance of expression in writing, and ignorance of the simplest rules of punctuation...are far from rare among the young who are well-prepared for college studies.”
Today, people are able to communicate rapidly using a wide variety of tools and technologies.Perhaps no linguistic development better indicates changes in the ways we communicate than the popular emoticon (表情符号).It is a visual representation of a smiley face turned sideways.Although an emoticon may look like a smile,a frown or any number of facial expressions,it doesn't really represent a face.Instead,it's intended to convey a feeling, such as “I'm happy” or “just joking”.
So,far from ruining language, the example indicates how people can now communicate complex feelings in a simple manner. This kind of change is perfect for our modern,fast-paced world.

Kenny Lake School in Alaska is small, with about 60 students from kindergarten to high school seniors.Jennifer Hodges,a teacher, said,“My students sit only at desks for 20 minutes a day. They do a lot of practical learning, such as raising salmon (鲑) from egg to fry (鱼苗) in the classroom and then releasing them into lakes.”
It is through a program called Salmon in the Classroom.Kate Morse, program director for the project,is in charge of the program. With this project, students have a completely different attitude because they know what it takes to actually go through the stages of a salmon.
They think learning about the habitat temperature and the effects of climate change is more crucial now than ever.In 2022,the Arctic had its sixth-warmest year on record. But this is unusual in raising salmon, which require cold water to survive.“We had a failure in our equipment and it brought the temperature up about five degrees”,said Hodges.“Just warming it that much just killed our eggs.”
They can also observe how deadly pollutants can be to salmon's habitat.During the months when the salmon are in the classroom, students like to sit by the tank to observe.“For instance, putting hand sanitizer (消毒剂) on your hands and then putting your fingers in the tank, you've polluted the tank,” said Hodges.
Each year in May,she takes her students on the Salmon Field Trip, where they will name the fish and get to release the salmon they've raised in class.
“The best part is getting to release them after watching them hatch from eggs and grow into fry and taking care of them,” said Fisher,a student.“You get to say goodbye.”
“I went to release them last year and the lake was still covered with ice,” said Styrling,a student.“I fell in.It was cold, but it was still funny.”

It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest.Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长类动物).Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat.Without competition,Columbus wouldn't have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb.
Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn't competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize.Perhaps the ecological definition—the simultaneous (同时的) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrients, living space,or light—better explains it.
As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin's theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendship learns to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact,in some circumstances, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart.College admission is the final high school objective.Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades, and a student's fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve the similar recognition.
Nevertheless,by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life.It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork.A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy can tear friendships apart.Yet,despite all these, without competition,we would be lost.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kevin was a member of a well-known family—well respected and industrious. However,a crisis left their family penniless.
Kevin decided to leave home city and make a living by himself because his family was too poor. Before leaving,he told his father,“I want to learn the circus (马戏) performance.”
His father was confused and wondered why he had such a strange idea.
What his father didn't know was that Kevin loved the circus since childhood.Every time there was news of a circus performance,he hurried home on his bicycle. He ran through the front door.“Mum,Dad,” he shouted.“The circus has come to town.”
He was very excited when his father took him and his sister to the circus the next day.At the circus, the audience always burst out laughing when the clowns (小丑) appeared. The attraction of the circus was endless.
He clearly remembered once they went and sat down,a lady in a shiny costume walked a tightrope. When a boy of Kevin's age rode a unicycle (独轮脚踏车),he asked for a volunteer.Kevin raised his hand and he was picked. The boy taught Kevin to ride a unicycle. The audience clapped. He had a great time at the circus!
His father was unhappy with his answer,“What? No,you can't do that.A circus is the place for clowns. Our family will be ashamed of you.”
But Kevin insisted (坚持).“Our family is so poor now.Which is more important to you, dignity (尊严) or food? I will give you some money every month from the circus. It probably will be a huge fortune.” His father was very stubborn (固执的).“If you go there, somebody will know about it very soon and I'll be very embarrassed, and it must be really tough to be skilled at performing such tricks.”
However,Kevin still left home and found a circus to stay regardless. He worked very hard studying magic and lived with animals.Every month, his parents would get a check from him.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

But they never knew Kevin's address. They knew the money was from Kevin but when people asked them about Kevin's job, they never told them the truth.Later, his parents received more money from him. Then,a magician named Albert became very famous across the country. Many people were fascinated by his performance and thought he was a legend of the field. One day,Kevin's father went to visit a relative in another city. The relative paid a lot for tickets of the magician's show and invited him to watch.
Kevin's father went to the show. During the show,he was totally impressed by the magician's tricks. When the magician took off his mask, the father found Albert was his son Kevin.Everything clicked.Kevin changed his name for fear that his career might bring shame on his family.Staring at the young adult on the stage and picturing how hard a life he must have experienced,Kevin's father felt a wave of mixed feelings coming over him.He couldn't wait to hug his son and told him how proud he was to have Kevin as their family member.
