B Recently, more than 1,000 researchers and executives signed an open letter calling for a pause (暂停) in research on artificial intelligence. The letter warns that AI may threaten jobs, spread propaganda (宣传), and even lead to the “loss of control of our civilization”. Many of the signatories (签署者) are thoughtful and experienced AI practitioners. Their concerns should be taken seriously. On balance, though, their approach is likely to evolve into an opposition to progress. Consider the broader worldview expressed in this document. It said, “Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and risks manageable.” This is a formula for complete stop, as no one can ever be so confident. The history of innovation is one of trial and error, risk and reward. One reason why the US leads the world in digital technology is that it did not constrain (约束) the industry with well-meaning but doubtful regulation. Slowing Al progress, moreover, carries risks all its own. Don't forget that this technology is likely to make the world richer, healthier, smarter and more productive for decades to come. By 2030, it might be contributing more than $15 trillion to the global economy. Advances in medicine, biology, climate science, education, manufacturing, transportation and much more are on the horizon. Any new rules must be balanced against the vast potential of these efforts. Nor is AI research advancing into a void (空白领域). The industry already operates within legal parameters (范畴) in response to potential harms. Companies have ensured their products are safe. Trade associations are developing codes of conduct and ethical frameworks. Far from the“ out-of-control race”, the AI business is constrained by law and politics and consumer sentiment (情绪). It's natural to worry about new technologies but the wealth and abundance of American society is due in no small part to risks taken in the past, in a spirit of openness and optimism. The AI revolution deserves no less. 4. Why did the researchers and executives sign the open letter? A. Because the research on AI had been paused. B. Because AI had uncontrollably destroyed human civilization. C. Because they were worried about the potential risks of AI. D. Because they were more experienced than others in AI field. 5. Why is the US mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To support that innovation comes from taking risks. B. To stress that the US is very important in the digital field. C. To draw attention to the benefits of well-meaning regulations. D. To reveal those people's real purpose of signing the letter. 6. What can we infer from this passage? A. Al technology consumes more money than it can earn. B. Society will hugely benefit from AI technology in the future. C. The AI industry is now developing without any restrictions. D. The development of AI technology is just a solo effort. 7. What is the passage mainly about? A. Regulations on AI are well-intended but doubtful. B. The future of AI is filled with unmanageable risks. C. AI safety concerns justify a temporary research pause. D. A pause in AI would hold back progress in innovation. C A girl is driving with her parents when they spot watercress growing by the side of the road. Her parents stop and take her out of the back seat. They ask her to take off her shoes and roll up her jeans to help them gather it. It is the beginning of the story in Watercress, a picture book written by Andrea Wang. The story is based on her childhood. “My parents actually spotted watercress growing by the side of the road in Ohio where I grew up,” Wang says. “And I was horribly embarrassed to get out and gather the watercress from the dirty water. It really made me aware of how different I was from my friends. But for my parents, it brought back memories of their home country and it was a connection to their homeland that they had left behind.” The feeling of being ashamed of our parents is universal. We’ve probably all experienced that at some point. “I remember walking 20 feet behind my parents when we were walking down the street, pretending that I didn’t belong to them,” Wang laughs. The pictures in Watercress have drawn inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, which often have mountains covered in clouds. “It always has felt dreamlike to me when I look at those paintings. And I thought it would be nice to bring it into my book because of its theme of memory,” Wang explains. Unlike the little girl in the story, Andrea Wang didn’t hear any story about her parents’ childhoods until she was an adult. “My parents were trying to protect me, by not telling me the hardships they went through,” Wang says. But as a kid, Wang remembers feeling disconnected from her history. “I think it’s really important for families to share what they can,” Wang says. “So that kids know that history and can feel a sense of pride in their culture.” 8. How did Andrea Wang feel when she was told to gather watercress? A. Excited. B. Curious. C. Scared. D. Ashamed. 9. What does the word “universal” underlined in paragraph 3 mean? A. Making sb feel a little bit angry. B. Being true at all times and in all places. C. Needing skill to do or understand. D. Being related to a particular group or society. 10. What does Andrea Wang say about Chinese landscape paintings? A. They are boring. B. They are difficult. C. They are beautiful. D. They are expensive. 11. What does Andrea Wang suggest parents do? A. Avoid talking about hardships. B. Explain whatever they went through. C. Tell their kids to be proud of their culture. D. Share some of their experiences with their kids. D Everywhere I look, there are new buildings under construction. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living. However, how can our children understand and maintain their cultural identity if we erase so much of the physical evidence of it? The arguments for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional attachment to the past. There are also good economic arguments in favour of preservation. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local residents, eager to learn about their city's past. Some have argued that historic preservation is too expensive, but many recent projects have demonstrated that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation of an existing structure for adaptive reuse can cost about £40 per square metre less than even the most basic new construction, while preserving the beauty of the original building. And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren’t very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New construction almost always has a more serious environmental impact (影响) because it requires the use of all-new materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too. Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered. 12. What drives people to replace old buildings with new ones? A. Their dislike of old buildings. B. Their pride in cultural identity. C. Their concern about young generations. D. Their desire for modern comforts. 13. What does the example of Al Bastikiya show? A. Historic renovation costs much money. B. Local governments support small businesses. C. Historic preservation brings economic benefits. D. International tourism promises economic recovery. 14. What can be inferred about renovating old buildings from paragraph 3? A. It uses green materials. B. It damages architectural beauty. C. It reduces enviromental impact. D. It worries environmental experts. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards historic preservation? A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There may come a time when someone requires your help for a mental health issue. ____16____. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm. Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. D. Objective. 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章讨论了人们对保护遗产的看法。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段“The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living.(我小时候所熟悉的社区,到处都是美丽的老建筑,现在大部分都消失了,取而代之的是现代化的高层建筑。这是有充分理由的。居民们想要现代生活的一切便利)”可知,是人们对现代舒适的渴望驱使人们用新建筑取代旧建筑。故选D项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The renovation (修缮)and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world.(对历史街区的改造和保护可以成为一个经济引擎,吸引游客和小企业来到该地区。例如,在迪拜,历史悠久的Al bastikiya区每年吸引成千上万来自世界各地的游客)”可知,举Al bastikiya的例子表明:文物保护带来经济效益。故选C项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren't very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built.(而且,尽管人们经常声称老建筑的环境足迹比新建筑更大,因为它们不是很节能,但建筑师和环境专家坚持认为,最环保的建筑是已经建成的建筑)”可推知,翻新旧建筑减少了对环境的影响。故选C项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered.(历史保护是一种提供多种可能性的选择;相反,拆迁是不可逆转的。一旦这些宝藏失去,它们就永远失去了,这是我们遗产中一个永远无法恢复的重要环节)”可推知,作者对历史保护的态度是积极的和支持的。故选A项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 There may come a time when someone requires your help for a mental health issue. ____16____.
