When she worked in banking, Irini Tzortzoglou’s idea of cooking was to pick up a ready meal from Marks &Spencer on her way home, and put it in the oven (烤箱). But now, since winning the BBC cooking competition Master Chef at the age of 60, with menus inspired by her Greek heritage (遗产), food has become her life and new career.
She had not been overly interested in cooking, though as a child, food was an important part of her life. Tzortzoglou, 64, was born in Greece, where her grandparents’ house was always open, and her grandmother would often be cooking for dozens of people. Tzortzoglou would help out: “I loved the smells. I loved the processes.”
Tzortzoglou felt very bored after retiring. Then one day her husband said, “Why don’t you try Master Chef because you always love watching it.”
She was a reasonably good cook, who loved entertaining and could put together a decent dinner party menu but competing on the show demanded a whole new skill level. “I didn’t want to embarrass myself by leaving in round one, so I trained myself for a year,” she said.
She put in time, effort and money. She went to Athens to see what was happening with Greek food today. She ate at Michelin-star restaurants to see what Greek Master Chef and the young chefs were doing. And then she started practicing. She also started physical training because she could see how tough it was to run around the kitchen while filming, or stand for hours.
Since her win, Tzortzoglou has become immersed in (沉浸于) Greek food, and has written a cookery book, Under the Olive Tree. “I don’t have free time, but I love it,” she said. “I feel like a child let loose in a sweet shop.”
24.What was Tzortzoglou like as a child?
A.She liked watching BBC programs. B.She studied hard to become a banker.
C.She showed some interest in cooking. D.She had to cook for the whole family.
25.Why did Tzortzoglou take part in Master Chef?
A.To pursue a new career. B.To experience a decent party.
C.To have a full life. D.To preserve the heritage of her homeland.
26.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Tzortzoglou’s love for Greek food. B.Tzortzoglou’s effort to win the competition.
C.Tzortzoglou’s desire to go back to Athens. D.Tzortzoglou’s performance at the competition.
27.Which of the following best describes Tzortzoglou?
A.Confident and outgoing. B.Literary and childlike.
C.Generous and creative. D.Active and inspiring.

When you picture doing a science project, you might imagine peering through a microscope or building a model volcano. But science projects can be done anywhere. Many teens get inspired from playing musical instruments to doing gymnastics. All it takes to transform your favorite activities into a science project is identifying a problem you want to solve.
Elizabeth, 14, who is in the 7th grade at Davis Drive Middle School in Cary, N.C, designed a program. Her method is based on the golden ratio (比例). This ratio is often used to create pleasing parts in artworks. The ratio also appears in nature. Elizabeth’s data storage strategy helps computers write data evenly (均匀地) across memory devices. This could help such devices last longer.
“As long as I can remember, I’ve been an artistic person,” Elizabeth says, “In the fourth grade, my art teacher taught us about the golden ratio. And at that point it was just, you know, something to use when we were painting.” But last year, Elizabeth had to replace the memory in her own computer, thinking the golden ratio might work in tech, too. Elizabeth tested her golden-ration technique by running programs on a computer.
But before this project, Elizabeth had no coding experience. To prepare, she spent months reading a textbook on how to code. She says, “It wasn’t like an ‘ah-ha’ moment. Writing algorithms (程序) is such a boring process. But it was just cool to explore and see the computer actually just doing stuff that I told it to do after those hours.”
“Don’t limit yourself,” Elizabeth adds, “One of the biggest challenges you face is changing your mindset. I never thought that science or computer science would be my kind of thing, but after learning a bit about programming, I found that it was actually a new way to express myself. Words, painting, now programming.”
28.What can we learn about science projects according to this passage?
A.They need skills in building models. B.They may involve great imagination
C.They can come from different hobbies. D.They will inspire teens to find solutions
29.What is Elizabeth’s programming used for?
A.Creating fine works. B.Protecting nature.
C.Strengthening memories. D.Storing information.
30.What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A.Well begun is half done. B.Every effort will pay off.
C.Imagination is the source of creation. D.Laugh it off when facing difficulties.
31.What is Elizabeth doing with her words in the last paragraph?
A.Offering advice. B.Giving response.
C.Expressing doubts. D.Making promises.

The Internet offers us an opportunity to know more people (without actually needing to “know them”), with very little effort. But are online friendships the same as in-real-life (IRL) friendships?
How people see online friendships and IRL friendships depends on their age. While digital immigrants (such as I) support scientist John Suler’s belief that people “separate their online lives from their offline lives”, the digital natives growing with Facebook and Instagram find differences between online and offline friendships more unclear.
The Pew Research Center (PRC) finds that 57% of American teens make new friends online. But, it also finds that most “digital friendships” stay in the digital space with only 20% of teens having met an online friend in person. It seems that real-time friendships are considered more valuable than digital friendships even among the digital natives. Best friends meet most often at schools and homes, although online meetings come a close third. The reason why online friendships are placed below IRL friendships is the absence of physical intimacy (亲密).
So, is the Internet bad for relationships? Obviously not. But for the net, I could have never kept in touch with or met my high school friend after a quarter of a century. But even if there is no physical separation, the digital native seems to find online interactions with real-life friends beneficial. 83% of teen social media users believe that social media makes them feel more connected to their friends’ lives. 78% of online gaming teens (mostly boys) feel more connected to existing friends with whom they play games.
However, online interactions can have an adverse effect on existing relationships. 68% of teen social media users report having experienced unpleasant feelings toward their friends on social media and 26% of all teens have had an argument with a friend over something that happened online or over text messages.
The Internet is undoubtedly an invaluable link between people separated by distance. But this link must be based on intimacy and familiarity and a balance of online and offline interactions will pave the way for better relationships in the world.
32.Which of the following may digital natives agree with?
A.Online friendships are long-lasting.
B.Online friendships just remain digital.
C.Online friendships clearly differ from IRL ones.
D.Online friendships are less valuable than IRL ones.
33.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.Why many teens choose online friendships.
B.How real-life friends make online interactions.
C.The influence of online interactions on teens’ lives.
D.The benefits of online interactions to IRL friendships.
34.What does the underlined word “adverse” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Lasting. B.Harmful. C.Decisive. D.Noticeable.
35.What opinion does the author express in the last paragraph?
A.The Internet is good for people’s relationships.
B.Good relationships don’t exist without intimacy.
C.It is good to balance online and offline communication.
D.Honesty matters to both online and offline communication.

Strategies to Overcome Self-Doubt Once and For All
Being self-confident is not easy and not everyone can do it, but it doesn’t need to be that difficult. 36
Going through life can be very challenging at times. When we were young, no one told us how hard it will be in the future but here we are. 37 And it is unpleasing and can kill your confidence levels if not controlled from the beginning.
We will all experience some self-doubt, which is natural. 38 It happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start a new job, a new task, or a new relationship, anything new in life will make you self-doubt. This sort of feeling puts you into dark days when nothing seems to go right and you might feel like giving up, and that is the time to be strong.
39 Self-doubt is when you are unsure about one or more aspects of yourself. For example, when starting a new job, you might feel inexperienced or might think that you are not fit enough for the job, and this is a prime example of self-doubt.
40 Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you. It motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday. This type of feeling will push you to work harder and faster than before and will also increase your productivity, but it should be a low level of self-criticism. You don’t want to punish yourself over things that are beyond your control.
A.We needn’t take it seriously.
B.It’s impossible for us to deal with it.
C.One of the big problems of adult life is having self-doubt.
D.Self-doubt isn’t all that bad, let us tell you why.
E.Let’s explore to find ways to remove self-doubt forever.
F.It will take long for us to solve this problem.
G.There are some people mistaking self-doubt for something else.

One Sunday morning, a high school student named Lily was wandering in the school. The sun shone brightly through the leafy trees that lined in the school courtyard. A gentle breeze wafted (吹送, 飘送) through the air, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from other students. It was at this peaceful and joyful moment that Lily saw a wallet lying on the ground. “Whose is it?” Lily said to herself. She picked it up and opened it, seeing a large amount of cash accompanied by important documents and ID cards.
Doubt and confusion began to consume Lily. “What should I do? Should I keep the money for myself? I can buy many things I’ve wanted for a long time.” she thought. The trees around her seemed to swing together, as if mirroring the chaos within her thoughts. “But if I took it, I’d be going against my values and breaking the trust others have in me,” a voice within her whispered urgently.
A knot formed in Lily’s stomach as she weighed the pros and cons, her thoughts racing. The blue sky above seemed to laugh at her confusion, offering no answers or respite (喘息) , which reminded her of the difficult choices she faced.
To make matters worse, just as Lily was about to hand the wallet over to the school administration, her phone rang, which was from her sick grandmother. “Hi, Grandma, what’s up?” Lily asked worriedly. “The doctor advised me to be hospitalized.” her grandmother replied. This added an extra layer of complexity to her already disordered thoughts. “Can I use the money to help Grandma?” Lily considered.
She shut her eyes, trying to close out her confusion and anxiety. She knew that she needed to make a decision, but she was unsure what to choose.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
In the end, Lily made the difficult decision to do the right thing.

根据第三自然段“Tzortzoglou felt very bored after retiring. Then one day her husband said, “Why don’t you try Master Chef because you always love watching it.”(Tzortzoglou退休后感到非常无聊。然后有一天,她的丈夫说:“你为什么不试试《主厨大师》,因为你总是喜欢看。”)”可知,因为无聊的退休生活,Tzortzoglou参加《主厨大师》比赛。所以,她参加比赛是为了充实生活。故选C。
26.主旨大意题。根据第五自然段“She put in time, effort and money. She went to Athens to see what was happening with Greek food today. She ate at Michelin-star restaurants to see what Greek Master Chef and the young chefs were doing. And then she started practicing. She also started physical training because she could see how tough it was to run around the kitchen while filming, or stand for hours. (她投入了时间、精力和金钱。她去了雅典,想看看今天希腊食物的情况。她在米其林星级餐厅用餐,看看希腊主厨和年轻的厨师们在做什么。然后她开始练习。她还开始了体能训练,因为她可以看到在拍摄时在厨房里跑来跑去,或者站上几个小时是多么困难。)”可知,第5段的主要介绍了Tzortzoglou为赢得比赛所做的努力。故选B。
27.推理判断题。根据前文所描述的Tzortzoglou参加烹饪比赛以及最后一段“Since her win, Tzortzoglou has become immersed in (沉浸于) Greek food, and has written a cookery book, Under the Olive Tree. “I don’t have free time, but I love it,” she said. “I feel like a child let loose in a sweet shop.”(自从获胜后,特佐格鲁就沉浸在希腊美食中,并写了一本烹饪书《橄榄树下》。

根据文章第一段“But science projects can be done anywhere. Many teens get inspired from playing musical instruments to doing gymnastics. All it takes to transform your favorite activities into a science project is identifying a problem you want to solve.(但是科学项目可以在任何地方进行。许多青少年从演奏乐器到做体操中获得灵感。把你最喜欢的活动变成一个科学项目所需要做的就是找出一个你想要解决的问题。)”可知,科学项目可以来自不同的爱好,只需要找到你想解决的问题,就可以将你喜欢的活动转化为科学项目。因此,科学项目可以来自不同的爱好。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Her method is based on the golden ratio (比例). This ratio is often used to create pleasing parts in artworks. The ratio also appears in nature. Elizabeth’s data storage strategy helps computers write data evenly (均匀地) across memory devices. This could help such devices last longer.(她的方法是基于黄金比例。这个比例经常被用来创造艺术作品中令人愉悦的部分。这个比例也出现在自然界中。Elizabeth的数据存储策略帮助计算机在内存设备上均匀地写入数据。这可以帮助这些设备使用更长时间。)”可知,Elizabeth的数据存储策略帮助计算机将数据均匀地写入存储设备中,这有助于延长设备的寿命。这表明她的编程是用于存储信息的。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“But before this project, Elizabeth had no coding experience. To prepare, she spent months reading a textbook on how to code. She says, “It wasn’t like an ‘ah-ha’ moment. Writing algorithms (程序) is such a boring process. But it was just cool to explore and see the computer actually just doing stuff that I told it to do after those hours.”(但在这个项目之前,Elizabeth没有编码经验。
根据文章最后一段““Don’t limit yourself,” Elizabeth adds, “One of the biggest challenges you face is changing your mindset. I never thought that science or computer science would be my kind of thing, but after learning a bit about programming, I found that it was actually a new way to express myself. 故选A。

根据第三段“It seems that real-time friendships are considered more valuable than digital friendships even among the digital natives.(只有20%的青少年见过网友。即使在数字原住民中,实时友谊似乎也被认为比数字友谊更有价值。)”可知,数字原住民也认为实时友谊(IRL友谊)比数字友谊更有价值。故选D。
33.主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“So, is the Internet bad for relationships? Obviously not. But for the net, I could have never kept in touch with or met my high school friend after a quarter of a century. But even if there is no physical separation, the digital native seems to find online interactions with real-life friends beneficial. 83% of teen social media users believe that social media makes them feel more connected to their friends’ lives. 78% of online gaming teens (mostly boys) feel more connected to existing friends with whom they play games.(那么,网络对人际关系有害吗?
根据划线单词下文“68% of teen social media users report having experienced unpleasant feelings toward their friends on social media and 26% of all teens have had an argument with a friend over something that happened online or over text messages.(68%的青少年社交媒体用户报告说,他们在社交媒体上对朋友产生了不愉快的感觉,26%的青少年曾因为网上或短信上发生的事情与朋友发生过争吵。)”
根据文章最后一段“The Internet is undoubtedly an invaluable link between people separated by distance. But this link must be based on intimacy and familiarity and a balance of online and offline interactions will pave the way for better relationships in the world.(毫无疑问,互联网是连接相隔遥远的人们的宝贵纽带。但这种联系必须建立在亲密和熟悉的基础上,线上和线下互动的平衡将为世界上更好的关系铺平道路。)”可知,作者在最后首先强调了互联网作为人们之间无价联系的重要性,并说明这种联系必须建立在亲密和熟悉的基础上。最后,作者提出了一个解决方案,即平衡线上和线下的交流,以促进世界上更好的关系。所以作者在最后一段既强调了互联网在人际关系中的积极作用,又提出了实现更好关系的具体方法。故选C。

39.根据下文“Self-doubt is when you are unsure about one or more aspects of yourself.”(自我怀疑是指你对自己的一个或多个方面不确定)可知,下文以“什么是真正的自我怀疑”来对前文给予驳斥。
40.根据下文“Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you. It motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday.”(低水平的自我批评实际上对你有好处。

Knowing you’re coming to China for a trip, I’d like to give you a warm welcome.
There’re many famous places of interest in China, among which the Palace Museum is most worth visiting. Located in the center of Beijing, it’s the classic example of Chinese palace architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. I strongly recommend you have a look at the entire palace area surrounded by tall walls, the great halls and the red and yellow colors representing royal power. It’s really the best place to learn about Chinese culture and history.
Hope you’ll like it!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

With a big smile on the face, the teacher thought highly of Lily for her honesty immediately. Feeling relieved and proud, Lily went back to her classroom as usual.
One day, Lily received a phone call from the school administration teacher. When she got to the teacher’s office, she saw a man was talking with the teacher. Knowing that Lily was the girl who returned his money, the man expressed his great gratitude to her and gave Lily plenty of cash in return. He said that Lily had helped him a lot and the documents were really important for him. He couldn’t imagine the consequences of losing them. But Lily didn’t accept his reward. She smiled, “I just did what I should do as a student”.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
