Unit 1 This is me!
一、 阅读理解。
聪明的鸽子
It can be difficult to tell how smart animals are-they can’t answer
questions. But scientists can give them tests to see what they can do.
Pigeons(鸽子) have lots of natural skills. They can read a landscape.
They can find their way home from places they’ve never been to. They can
understand human faces, and follow hundreds of pigeon friends.
一
二
But can they count? Many animals can tell more from less, and keep
following 3 or 4 objects(物体). Pigeons can learn to peck(啄) at groups
of objects in counting order (the group with one first, then the group with
two, etc.), no matter what the objects are. This shows that they
understand the idea of numbers.
Pigeons can also learn to peck at a button exactly 8, or 16, or 24
times to get a treat. A pigeon can even remember its place if it gets troubled.
一
二
Like all birds, pigeons have very sharp eyes. They can see many more
colours than humans. They can see a tasty sesame seed(芝麻粒) on the
grassy ground.
Pigeons are also good at finding patterns and solving shape puzzles
(谜). In games to match shapes, they are faster than humans. In fact,
some scientists are studying pigeons’ brains to help teach robots and
computers how to see.

生活在城里的猴子
It’s fun to visit the monkeys at the zoo, and to watch them play and
climb. Sometimes they sit and look at us, or care for their babies. We laugh
at how smart they are. 1.
And then we go home, where we don’t see monkeys. But in some parts
of the world, monkeys live in cities right alongside people. They play near
the roads or climb up the trees along the streets. 2. But sometimes, it
isn’t happy at all. We may feel bored with them.

In New Delhi, India, thousands of small monkeys live in the city.
They take food away from street sellers and break into people’s houses and
leave a mess(混乱). 3. Climbing monkeys can also cut power lines
(输电线), knocking out electricity(电) and the Internet.
Lots of people would just like to stay away from the monkeys. Others
believe that they should be kind to them. In some organizations, people feed
and care for wild monkeys. 4.

Many years ago, New Delhi had forests around it. Monkeys had many
places to live there. But more and more people are moving to the city.
Every year the city grows and more of the forest is cut down. Sometimes,
the monkeys aren’t moving into the city. 5. Monkeys are smart
animals that know about new conditions(条件)-a lot like people. And now
monkeys are learning to live in the city.

Unit 2 Hobbies
A
宠物山羊芬恩
I had a brown goat named Finn. I raised him after finding him in the
forest. He wasn’t healthy. I took him in. I four times every day,
and he grew up fast. Soon he was running around and playing with other
goats. Sometimes he tried to eat my books and my clothes, and every day
he got more playful.
One day I had to make a painting for Art homework, so I painted a
picture of Finn, wanting to show my class my pet goat. I left the drawing in
the barn(谷仓), but I later found it with small bite marks(咬痕) in the
paper. I tried to tell him that he shouldn’t do that, but he just blinked(眨
眼) in surprise.
Just then, I had a good idea. I put Finn’s feet into my blue paint, and
then held a carrot across from him so that he would have to walk on the paper
to get to me. While he ate the carrot, I looked down at the paper. It was
decorated(点缀) with blue, and I could see two footprints(脚印) like
flowers on the paper! I then did that with colours red, yellow, and green.
When I showed my class my painting at school, they were all surprised
at my artwork. After getting home from school, I made lots of footprints. I
handed a page full of footprints to all the people in my class.
The little prints must have interested them. A And the next day some of them brought more prints from home. B There were cow prints, horse prints, pig prints, chicken prints, and much more. C Finn’s wonderful art led other kids to make artworks. D .

Mammals
Mammals include a wide range of animals, from anteaters(食蚁兽)
to zebras. They’re all warm-blooded, they give birth to live young, and
they have hair or fur. We doubt you’ll find an anteater in your backyard, but
you might see a squirrel or two.
Tip: If you live in North America or Europe, you may see any of 10
different squirrel species.

still the shortest time in the school.
At home, she always ate her dinner quickest. She never stopped to talk
about how her day went with her parents. 3. She just put food into her

Of course, she never took part in any real contests(比赛). Her
friends all joined in different kinds of contests. Some of them even went to
